HTC Desire HD :: Allowance / "Enable Always On Mobile Data"?
Oct 20, 2010
So this is the first time I've had a phone with internet,i'm looking at the settings for mobile network. "Enable always-on mobile data" is ticked,?does that means in the backgorund 3g is always running to check for new gmail, or facebook notifications, etc etc, should I turn this off to use less data allowance. I'm okay when I'm home because it will connect to my wi-fi. There is an option for "data roaming" which is off. what is this? Network mode set to GSM/WCDMA auto? So about this, just want more info so I my phone doesn't get the better of me.

A freind of mine recommend that I uncheck this. He said it saves battery life as it isnt always checking the net but everything still works fine. Is this right?

My first thread, second post here... sort of. This is a great forum, been reading it all week, it's been very helpful making decisions.I originally posted this in someone else's thread as I thought it was on the same topic, but I guess now I look at it more closely it would require quite a derail to answer my questions. I hope it isn't wrong to quote myself like this, I don't want to spam. I've edited it slightly to fit better here: I should be getting my desire from three today (got a text earlier, it's late arriving), I was considering switching to t-mobile with their nice 3gb allowance on android phones but when i phoned up 3 they gave me a pretty good deal, and the 3 signal where i'm moving to later this year has been better than t-mobile. So far so good. However, I was under the impression that 3 had a 1GB fair use policy, which seemed it would be enough for me (I'm mainly worried about google navigation, I'm going to be a bit lost for a while after we move, I don't know the new area). I thought I'd better check, and now some sites I've found seem to suggest it has been reduced to 500mb per month since May 1st, though i can't find any official word anywhere.
Does anybody know the full story? It seems a bit of a stupid thing to reduce the browsing limit at the same time as changing all your plans to 'Internet Talker' and 'Internet Texter'. If the limit is 500mb, does anyone know how strict that limit is, ie do they only get annoyed if you go a large amount over the cap, or do you get charged immediately? Just to add, I did speak to someone in a 3 store about 5 days ago when I was checking out the handset in person, and he assured me that it was 1GB, though I then did the deal over the phone with the upgrades people. Does anyone think they might increase the limit to 1GB (if it is now 500mb) for me if i ring and cite this conversation? I was thinking that I might still have some negotiating leverage during the 7 days distance selling 'cooling off period' to get things changed.

Just a quick question to those who have brought the Desire from mobilephonesdirect.com on a T-mobile contract. What data allowance have you got? Have you got the standard 3Gb T-mob gives to Android phones or have you got less? I have browsed their site and under their 'unlimited mobile internet' it says 1Gb.

Can anyone help explain what this does? I did a small search around the internet, and it came up with just about nothing. My first question is: I turned mobile data off, and yet, during the night, I was charged for data, so something leaked.Personally, I thought if this was because of this particular function. But maybe it was something else. So, I turned it off, but around the forums for other androids people seem to think that syncing doesn't work as well with this disabled.Does anybody know what might have happened? And could this function have been the thing that caused the leak. The leak, was actually for only 50 KB or so, but because I'm on Page Plus, it caused me to go under the required balance to refill of $29.95 and caused my plan to lapse. It's important for me for this not to happen again. Can anyone give any tips?

I need to find a way to enable / disable mobile data (the thing you can manually enable / disable in Settings->Wireless->Mobile Network (android 2.1)But I can't find any API for that. For WIFI, there's a method setWifiEnabled(boolean) on the class WifiManager. But I can't find anything like that for the data network... no method for this on TelephonyManager or ConnectivityManager.Isn't it possible to programmatically enable / disable mobile data?

I am thinking of getting the HTC Desire but the only thing that is really putting me off is the data allowance issue. I have seen a good deal with Orange but the data allowance is 500mb. Now I need a phone where I can constantly check my emails and have push email set up. Also I like the updated news feed screen on the HTC Desire and would like to have these two features on permanently. If I was to do this how much data would be used if I recieved and sent around 30-40 emails a day and had the news screen constantly updated? I want the HTC Desire but am just thinking of getting the Blackberry Bold 9700as there will be no fear of going over the data allowance and incurring hefty charges. I want to order either one today so would appreciate any honest opinions

I checked my data usage at the AT&T web site and found that the phone was sending lots of data on its own. One night while sitting on the counter it sent over 19 megabytes at 2:41 am. For 4 nights in a row a data transmission ocurred at this exact time. Following are excerpts from my bill: Code...

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

Until very recently, I had a widget on one of my Desire home screens that allowed me to toggle mobile data with one touch. It was an official (HTC or Android) widget, and I found it so useful I wanted to use it as an example or how to put a widget on the phone for my Dad... who has also just got one.And now I can't find it again under 'Add to Home' 'Widget'.What's happened? Have HTC pulled it? I know there are thid-party options, but I'd like my original back!

I'm travelling to Spain next week and will be taking my HTC Desire for photos and to use Wi-Fi in my hotel. However, I'm concerned that the phone will use mobile data as well, either without my knowledge or accidentally. Is there a way I can ensure without any doubt that my Desire won't use mobile data? Obviously I don't want to turn on airplane mode because I still want to use Wi-Fi.

Currently using launcherpro as default but having a little problem with my data connection. Do you guys leave mobile internet on then use a data connection toggle like on switch pro to enable disable as and when you like? Or do you use a toggle like curvefish apn to rename and automatically connect to the network? Or do you turn it on and off via settings or the power button as and when you need it? Bit lost on the subject to be honest. Also when I go and turn mobile internet on in the settings under it it says something like connect to mobile internet when WiFi is unavailable. Is this the default setting or can it be changed to only connect when I want it to?

I decided to try out LauncherPro and I quite like it but one big annoyance is that there's no longer a widget for toggling mobile data on/off. Any widget that would do that on the market?
PS: I tried Android on-off widget but it only changed access points or something and that's not what I'm looking for.

Does anybody know of a decent app for the Desire that will switch off mobile data when the battery reaches a certain threshold?
I've tried Battery-fu but I get an apn error all the time which stops the mobile data toggle working - which kinda defeats the object.
It would be handy to have mobile data ennoblement automated in case three battery gets low when you're not near a power source.

I have an un-branded Desire with the latest HTC OTA firmware update and it's running on T-Mobile here in the UK. I have Web n'Walk so I get the full-speed HSDPA data service when it's in range.
I also use Google Maps Navigation a lot. The problem I notice is that sometimes after setting a new route the mobile data connection to download the route data fails to fire up. I can see the mobile signal strength bars, but no 3G or HSDPA signal indicators. And of course without the data connection the new route details don't get downloaded. I usually have to power off the phone and then re-power to get around this.
It doesn't happen consistently - sometimes no problems at all. And the problem seems unrelated to signal strength.
Does anyone else experience this and has anyone found a solution?

In my application it is necessary to have internet connection. Therefore i check while starting if a Internet connection is available. If not I ask the user if he would establish an Internet Connection, and what type (wifi oder mobile). The wifi connection i can establish with the following code WifiManager wifiManager = (WifiManager) getSystemService(Context.WIFI_SERVICE);
wifiManager.setWifiEnabled(true); But how do i establish a mobile connection? Couldn't find a single code snippet at Google.

I am working on Mobile forensics. I need to access locked android phone system files without USB Debugging enable.
For accessing System files, I need to root android but it is locked with pattern lock or passcode (USB Debugging Disabled).
If i'll flash the mobile, it will change the filesystem which is not forensically sound.
if i'm able to clone the mobile (bit to bit copy) for further forensics.

I had to call my carrier today as they charged me $5 for 0.24 or somethign of a megabite of data. I have a feeling that this happened because of facebook syncing (which, it shouldnt, i have it set to NOT auto sync in the settings, but anyway).
With my carrier MMS uses data, but it is included with my unlimited messaging.
Is there a way to tell my phone to use data ONLY for MMS messages and nothing else?
I have wifi everywhere i go. ifi could recieve MMS over wifi i could and just ditch the data entirely. but thats not the way it works unfortunately.
I am on a samsung device running android 4.0.4 (rooted), with Koodo mobile.

What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

In android 4.0 and above there is the option in the data usage settings, to turn mobile data on and off. What difference does it exactly make? As fas as I tested, I still can take a look at my mobile data usage, even though it is tuned off in the data usage settings.
According to this source of Google
[URL]
turning it off means:
Quote:
If it's off, you won't be able to use mobile data at all and many features of your phone and apps won't work correctly.
what they mean by "...use mobile data at all..." (since I still have 3G) and what features there could be?

Android Version: 2.2 T-Mobile branded
Network: Base - a brand of e-plus, Germany
Taskiller Used: None
Issue: Switch on tethering OR mobile hotspot ->mobile network dies
I've installed Froyo on a T-Mobile branded Desire. After the update, turning on USB tethering leads to immediate loss of mobile network - it just turns itself off. Same goes for the mobile Wifi hotspot: turn on -> for 2 seconds, it's working -> mobile network drops off. Moving into airplane mode and back brings back the network, but tethering is a goner. With 2.1, USB tethering had worked. I'm on Base, a brand of e-plus. I've talked to their customer services, they say Base absolutely supports tethering.

I want, and I have for a while been willing to, disable and enable DATA (2g, 3g, whatever) with a long press of the search button. And I mean only long-pressing it, NOT opening an app with it and disable it from the app (doesn't make any sense, otherwise one would press the HOME button and disable it from a widget there).

As Nexus One is the only model which has already "partly" updated to Froyo,Before Froyo, if I wanna enable/disable mobile data usage, I used a passive way, changing the APN server setting, to fool the system so it couldn't connect. In Froyo, there is a new option under Setings -> Wireless & Network Settings -> Mobile Networks called Data enabled/disabled, which is a much direct approach than changing the APN.But up to today, I've yet to see a widget which targets at this option. Currently I hv made a 3G shortcut to that setting page on to my home screen. Really hope there will be a toggle widget instead! So how do u guys enable/disable data usage at the moment without a handy widget on Froyo?

I use my phone daily in a non-Verizon network, so having Data Roaming enabled is very important for me. The new ROM I installed, however, does not have a menu option for enabling/disabling Data Roaming.
Any way to do this through script? Or maybe there is something that can be changed in "build.prop" (or another file) that would change the default setting of Data Roaming disabled to be enabled?
