View 15 RepliesI use HTC Desire (updated to Froyo) and at home Google Maps Navigation works great and I never worry about the data connection because I have a large data allowance each month. But I'm now in Germany for a few days and I don't really want to pay roaming rates. So, I find that I can of course use the hotel wifi to plot the route.
This can work but most of the time it doesn't. The problem is that the route is not downloaded (at least not completely) until the phone has a GPS fix. Usually this happens after I'm out of range of the wifi signal and so I have no route to navigate. Is there a way of downloading the route without needing the satellite fix to validate it? This would make life so much simpler!
I am taking a holiday to South West France (Nantes Area) in July and hope to use Google Navigation but I am a bit concerned about data usage. I am on t-mobile 3gb limit but that won't apply as soon as I go out of UK coverage, bearing in mind $5.00 per a MB I could use a a lot of MBs to make a 200 mile journey. What my main concerns are,
1. Although I can set up Google to navigate to where I am going at home, will it cache the route but if I exit Google Nav is the route deleted.
2. Would it be best to buy a euro data bundle from t-mobile,I don't intend using the phone for anything else, apart from perhaps an odd call or text.
3. Try another Navigation app, have tried Andnav2 but can't seem to extract the maps onto my phone and have tried it where I live and it wanted to send me a longer route down country lanes rather than the direct route.
4. Buy a French PAYG SIM card with some data allowance, could be difficult as my French is not that fluent!
5. Buy a Navigation app such as Destinator 9,don't really want to pay for something like that. Perhaps I could get away with the trial period.
6. Scrap the whole idea and use some thing like mapdroid,or just buy a road map.
I just want to get to my destination without paying a fortune or running up a huge bill without knowing it.
I was wondering if it is at all possible to install map data (UK MAP) to the phone so I don't have to turn on data usage for apps like navigation etc. Really starting to get into Android now, my Legend is serving me well.
View 3 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know how much data Google Maps & Navigation uses? Obviously this can change depending on how far you are going and what type of map detail you are using, but I was just wondering. Is it hundreds of MBs for each trip around the block, or something much smaller? With AT&T's tiered data plans, this is important to know.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to wrap my head around this and it's probably an obvious answer but why can't I dial out using my GV number unless I have a data connection active? Per Google and from what I can see, no VoIP is being used and it seems to me when I have a data connection and use GV to dial out it just dials a Google number first. I'd think the call would be made to GV, GV would patch the call through to the person being called and pass on the GV caller ID number. So why does the app need to have a data connection to work?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there any way of changing the voice on these, the synthesised voice is AWFUL. Apart from not being able to pronounce English words correctly (E.g. Kew <queue> said as koo - I can't imagine what is must be like if I had to drive down Gloucester or Leicester) it's soooooo grating and harsh on my lugs.I've tried both English and American English settings but both are as bad as each other. Is there a download for new voices or one in the pipeline?I'm shocked this passed Google's quality control!
View 18 Replies View RelatedI know HTC have added their own 'offline' maps application, which I am quite interested in, I am however wondering if plain old Google Maps, Navigation and most of all Latitude are still present / working?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am REALLY impressed with the google maps navigation on my Desire, I have a TomTom and pay for maps quarterly and it's up to date but still does not know about the 4 new roads where i live and one is a few miles long. However Google Navigation knew about the new roads (1 extra before i knew, let alone tomtom)
How can they offer such great navigation for free when i have just paid ?74 for my tom tom map update and it's still out of date.! if htc/google can fix the issue of calls via blutooth whilst using HTC desire for navigation i tell you TOMTOM are history and thats hard to say after all these years!
Need some advice, google maps and navigation never quite takes me to the right place, close too it but never quite there. Now near location is okay for something free, but its usually that last wee bit that you need more than anything, instead of you coming to an estate and it tells you its on the left hand side, which is the whole estate. I read in a thread here someplace about another free sat-nav that Im sure was for another phone type, but then someone in one of the other phone forums gave everyone a link into that forum to show how it works. Anyone know what I am talking about ? (most folks never do and they know me lol) or anyone know how to make the google navigation more reliable?
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust updated google maps via the market place to version 4.3 and i admit the answer is no doubt staring me in the face but on a earlier version of the said "app" you had the option to use street view while navigating. My question is "where is it gone" as for some reason when i now try to navigate to a destination that option is missing.
View 21 Replies View Relatedive got a nokia blue tooth kit in my car and my desire is paired with it. it works thru the car speakers for voice calls but nothing else (lots of echo tho) but my old phone used to give navigation over the speakers too. it would even interupt my in car cd player to give directions then continue playing cd audio. any idea ? looked in my phone settings but cant see anything
View 1 Replies View RelatedEven when wifi is turned off, the mobile network gives this message "Use phone for data connection when wifi is unavailable".
My wifi is turned off and the 3G connection is also strong. With this issue, I cannot access the internet as the browser or the app says that there are connection issues
I'll be gettin a Desire in July when US Cellular gets it. I've read that the Desire does not have voice search like the Nexus One and Moto Droid. Will GMN still have voice search for finding places?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used Google turn by turn navigation yesterday (first time for a while), and the voice was giving the road names as full numbers rather than the digits. (e.g. the "A" four thousand and fifty five, rather than the "A" four O five five), I know it used to do this when the app came out, but I thought they had fixed it. Does anyone know why its reverted to saying the full number rather than digits ? Using Android Froyo 2.10.405.2
View 3 Replies View RelatedI live in Sweden and the application is on my phone, but does not work. That is odd because it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to do, especially if Google Maps already gives turn-by-turn directions. I'm guessing it might have to do with the language or pronunciation of the streets. I don't mind using it in English, though.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNavigation will work fine initially, but the next time I go to use and I enter in a destination, it just stays on the "calculating route" (or whatever it says) screen. I have to go into Applications - Maps and clear the data there, then restart and it works fine then, but it's a bit of a ball ache because that clears the list of previous destinations. Anyone else having the same problem? It was fine before the update, but I don't know if it's a Froyo issue or an issue with the map update as I updated them both on the same day.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using my HTC Desire on virgin mobile and quite often find that it reports an HSPDA connection but no data appears. I checked the APN settings and I did not have proxy or port number, I now put in 193.30.166.4:8080. So I have 2 questions
Firstly what are the correct complete set of setting for virgin internet and MMS on Desire?
Secondly will these settings help solve the intermittent data issue, if not what will?
anyone else on O2 unable to get any data connection this morning?my APN says its connected, but I cant use the internet, market, email etc this morning?I have done several reboots and tried putting it in and out of airplane mode.It was working fine when I went to bed last night. I turned APNs off overnight.

View 7 Replies View RelatedTook my HTC Desire to Italy and since then have lost all mobile data connections - though works fine on WiFi. Switched on airplane mode for flights, and switched off data roaming to reduce overseas costs. But when switched back on to use internet couldn't get any network connection. Now back in the UK still same issue - no internet, and cannot send MMS picture messages - even when in strong 3G signal Tried all the options I can find but no joy at all.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUnbranded, fully updated (2.1-update1), Desire. Three months old. No task killers installed. Just this past couple of days I've noticed it has not been showing the data connection symbol in the top bar, next to the signal strength bars. Try and connect to the internet or the market and get a 'failed' pop up window asking to either retry of cancel. Retry never works.
I go into settings > Wireless & Networks and disable Mobile Network, then enable it again and it flickers on then goes off again. Repeat this and it stays on for a while but always goes off again after about 20 minutes even though the Mobile Network is ticked green. Why is this happening? I'm missing emails because of this and it's a bit of a pain.
Does anyone use Juice defender? I downloaded it the other day and first thought it was great, certainly improved my battery life, but after a while i noticed that i kept losing my data connection even with the screen switched on, and also as soon as i finish a phone call, i loose my data connection and it takes ages for it to reconnect! anyone else had experience of this, or does anyone know of a similar app i could try?
View 7 Replies View RelatedCurrently using launcherpro as default but having a little problem with my data connection. Do you guys leave mobile internet on then use a data connection toggle like on switch pro to enable disable as and when you like? Or do you use a toggle like curvefish apn to rename and automatically connect to the network? Or do you turn it on and off via settings or the power button as and when you need it? Bit lost on the subject to be honest. Also when I go and turn mobile internet on in the settings under it it says something like connect to mobile internet when WiFi is unavailable. Is this the default setting or can it be changed to only connect when I want it to?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI would like advice from those with 2.2 on Orange. I've had my Desire for 2 months now and love it-apart from one thing-the damned Internet connection. Quite often, with a strong 3G+ (HSDPA) signal, my internet connection fails to load data. Then, a few minutes later, in the same location, it works perfectly. I know for a fact that this is not a network only problem. The reason I know this is because I previously used the exact same SIM in my iphone for 6 months in the very same locations and it always worked perfectly.
Therefore, my strong suspicion is that the problem is a result of the combination of the Orange branding on a Desire and the network itself. I'm sure I read of a couple of posters here who had the very same problems and when they moved to 2.2 the problem disappeared. Can anyone confirm? I've been waiting patiently for the Orange update to 2.2 but am getting fed up and I'm concerned that the Orange bloatware may still cause an issue after this. Hence, I'm considering a debrand and update myself.
Before I updated to android 2.2 and updated to latest Googlemaps the navigation was perfect. It calculated the route in seconds and was a joy to use. Since the updates, it is taking ages to calculate route, so long in fact that I exit the programme and start again, and then I just give up and dig out my atlas.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy HTC Desire (UK) has been find ever I had it, no issues whatsoever. Recently updated the Android software and ever since then I can only access the web/market etc when connected through wifi.
My signal bar simply shows bars whereas in the past it had either a G, 3G or H next to it, and I'm guessing this is linked into the problem.
Can anyone confirm if Google Navigation can be used to just show your progress/location on a road while driving, without having to have an actual destination input?I know this was shown on a few of Rob's videos as not being possible, but just wanted to confirm if anyone had any further info on it.
View 30 Replies View RelatedIs anyone else not getting a mobile internet connection right now? This has happened before on Orange but it's different this time because my phone doesn't seem to be searching for a network to join (before in the settings it would say "searching" or something and be greyed out but not this time)
Hopefully it's just a network problem, rather than my phone
I've managed to fix it i think. It would seem something I installed (im thinking SwitchPro Widget) changed the APN name in the settings to orangeinternet_off.
