HTC Desire :: Air - Speed Velocity Of An Unladen Swallow?
Aug 2, 2010
After reading on here that task killers were a MUST have I was running advanced task killer. However my phone has been lagging recently and after reading a bit more people were suggesting Task Killers were the cause of this, I uninstalled Advanced Task Killer and installed Android System Info. Since unistalling the Task Killer the phone is much faster in general, by my perception. Using Android System Info I can see that available memory is at times about the same as after performing a kill, suggesting that Android handles resources well left to itself by auto killing apps or processes when ram is low. It shows info on when the system considers ram low and starts killing apps as well as loads of other system info and logs. Looking at the Tasks tab shows how many apps are running and the memory used, but crucially also shows the CPU usage of thoe apps. Generally the Apps in memory are using ZERO cpu usage, My quadrant benchmark with Appkiller was 538, without it is 567. Not massive, but still BETTER. I would like anyone to comment on the following:-
1. Does Killing and restarting apps decrease battery life due to increased CPU Usage ?
2 Does memory itself use Battery life if the items in memory are not using CPU ?
3 Does having low available ram matter when the CPU actually does the work and can Android kill fast enough when Ram is required to meet an applications requirements?
4 What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Ok, the family has Allys I am trying to convince them to let me flash Velocity to their phones, But they think I will kill their phones. Would there be a good noticeable speed difference, Battery life? Any other odd perks I can use to convince them?
Cause they are always complaining about how it is slow.

Does anyone else find find the camera on the Desire extremely sensitive to any hand movement while taking a picture? I found the camera on my old iPhone 3GS much better in this department (although the picture quality overall was not as good). And I know that a phone is no replacement for a dedicated camera, but is there any way to improve the shutter speed/sensitivity to movement?

thinkbroadband.com have made available an android speed tester. I always thought my mobile broadband speeds were bad: now I have confirmation. Both upload and download were 0.02mbps. (My wifi speed was, as I expected, my normal 9mbps.) Mobile broadband is really poor - hardly usable.

Recently I just did the force apps to SD on my desire (froyo). However, I realize that after the force apps to SD, my desire speed slow down and lags. For example it take a few secs to open an apps while previously it was rather quick. And also, the handcent SMS take rather long to open.

I am a big fan of mythbusters and i'll bet that many of your are too. I like all those high speed camera shoots and i was thinking if would it be possible to make an app to use the camera to shoot high speed videos. I am not thinking like professional high speed video (those go up to millions of fps) but more like up to 1000 or 500. The desire should be able to shoot hd 720p video (lets hope with the next update) and may be would be possible to to make lower resolution high speed videos. I think the cpu is enough, but would the camera be able?

Where can I find that exact flashlight app that is in Velocity 0.3? When I look in the market, there are TONS of them and most of them only make the touch screen turn bright.P.S. I did have Velocity 0.3, but went back to just a stock rom with Universal Androot. Google maps, which I actually use a lot, was being very slow and buggy for me.

I just compiled a very small theme to test the waters. Its basically only an edit of the status bar, battery icon, browser background, and for no reason what so ever made the gtalk icon grey scale.Like I said, testing the waters here and only did a tiny bit of modifying. When Velocity 0.2 comes out I will be making a more detailed theme. This is just something to throw on your rom while you wait.Note: This will not completely replace your current theme if you have one. This theme will work best when installed on the stock theme.Beautiful Widgets and launcherpro not included.

So with 2 ROM's out now everybody want's to know the "under-the-hood" benefits of both ROM's. Both Velocity and Raptor report 6.8 MFLOPS with Linpack, no OC, just the Turbo. Testing battery on both, will let you guys know tomorrow.
-ILL RUN SOME SERIOUS STRESS TESTS ON BOTH ROM'S TO SEE WHICH ONE CAN HANDLE MORE RESOURCE USE BEFORE A BUNCH OF FORCE CLOSES POP-UP OR PHONE STARTS FREEZING.
My opinion: In my opinion Velocity is snappier but I'll post more on this by tomorrow so check back!

I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue. I have the OC kernel as well set at 729/245.

I have my lg Ally with the new Jit kernel (Thanks Drellisdee), with Velocity 0.2 (Thanks Trident) and am overclocking at 768 mhz. I want to apply the new update, VZB, and then put velocity and the jit kernel back. So my thoughts are that I would have to...
1.) Backup rom/Apps/Data (Titanium Backup/ROM Manager)
2.) Go into Recovery (Clockworkmod) and make a nendroid backup.
3.) Wipe Dalvik, data, and cache.
4.) Install vzb via Drellisdee's rooted update (After i check md5)
5.) Then Apply Velocity 0.2
6.) Apply the kernel
7.) Restore data from titanium backup...
Is this what I would do? What about the ally's unofficial "V9" update that has to be installed manually... Is that worth it or should I just do VZB?
Also, do I need to go to a stock rom proior to the update?

If this is the wrong place to post, apologies. I recently rooted, got ROM Manager with Clockwork Recovery and flashed the Velocity ROM. Everything works quite awesome, but I'm not getting my notification sound when I get a text message. I do get it for other notification events, and I've tried a couple different sounds just for good measure. Is this a ROM issue? An issue with my phone? Anyone else experiencing it? Right now I'm using the default messaging app.

I have a copy of the Google Genie APK that has transparancy and was previously using it. Velocity 0.3 has the Genie widget (was it in 0.2 as well...don't recall) and I've tried removing it via a script in the terminal emulator. Removed fine, but I cannot install the APK I have for some reason. Simply comes up with the error "Application not installed". When I do attempt to install the APK, a message comes up saying that "The application you are installing will replace another application". I know that the file versions are different as well. Love the transparent widget.

Few months back Bluetooth worked fine in my HTC Velocity 4G and the OS was 2.x.x. Suddenly it started to malfunction. Bluetooth is working. Can search and find for Bluetooth devices. Can pair (but doesn't ask for the passcode confirmation). But,
1. Cannot connect to the paired device.
2. Cannot send or receive files. When share through Bluetooth it just nothing happens. Same for the file receiving.
I did reset but didn't solve the problem. Therefore I updated the OS to 4.0.3, then reset the phone. But no result.
