General :: Timer Won't Shut Off?
Oct 16, 2012
I've found that the stock clock/timer app alarm on my LG Eclipse running ICS 4.0.4 won't shut off if I leave the main app screen to go do something else on the phone while it ticks away in the background. The only way to get the alarm to stop seems to be to reboot the phone. If I leave the timer ticking in the foreground it shuts off normallyt when the acknowledge "ok" is pressed. I tried contacting LG about it, but haven't heard anything back.

What possible reason could there be for you to code your apps so that they switch on in the background when the phone is turned on and use up precious battery life?
Or, why would you code your apps to stay on after I, the user, have hit the back button because I no longer want your app to run?
I mean, REALLY! Yes, I own up to being a newbie Android user, and what I don't know could fill the Library of Congress. Still, this is common sense we're talking about here. I've done some industrial app development and Enter/Exit, On/Off are basic pieces of logic in the main loop of an program in any language.
The only reason that we phone users need task killer apps is because you developers insist on creating apps that don't know when the f**k to turn themselves off.
And, it seems to me like you, the app developers, are one of the main reason why these phones have such crappy battery life. I mean, my Samsung Instinct, as bad as it was, got 18 to 24 hours of life off of one charge. With the Hero, I'm lucky if I can get 10 hours, and that's even with configuring my email download to only three times per day!
This is not hard, people. You code the app to stay off until, I, the user, manually turn it on. AND, you also code it to turn off when I, the user, hit the back button.
Yes, I understand that there are certain apps that it is advantageous to keep running in the background. So, fine, make it so those keep running. BUT, there is no possible reason for apps like Flashlight, or BBC News, or Camera, or SprintTV to have to run all the time in the background!
I am so tempted to just trash the lot of you. If I did, maybe I might not have as much functionality, but my teenager would be able to reach me late in the day because my phone battery would still have juice.

When I'm running a timer or stopwatch there's no easy way to tell how much time you have left without returning to the app. Thought a cool feature would be to have a small notification on the status bar, always visible like the clock, that you could quickly glance at to check how its going.

My friend is on CM7 for the Evo 4g. He wants to know if there's any way to increase how long the lock screen stays lit up before it sleeps again(like when you light it up to check the time). I've personally never seen any option for that before, and honestly never cared about it but now I'm curious.
Where or how to change that setting? I'm not adverse to modifying a few system files here and there if necessary.

For some reason whenever I now use the keyboard on my LG 4X HD the phone says aloud the key I'm pressing. I don't even know what it's called, perhaps "keypress vocals"? Can't find where to switch it off or even turn down the volume, which is really loud, very annoying as it does it even when the phone is on mute. Searched the settings, no luck. I'm going to be travelling a lot on planes and trains in the next few weeks and I really don't want people listening to what I type. I think on some forum somewhere mentioned that it could be a Driving Mode setting, but I can't find that anywhere either.

I'm using the timer in a quiet environment and I would either like to have one of the following
The timer to vibrate when the alarm sound is completely silent. I set the timer and turn off the screen but theres no vibration AND no sound so I don't know when the time is up.
OR
The timer to play the alarm through the headphones. No matter what, all the alarms play through the speaker.
Is there a timer app or alarm app can do these? I'm using cm 10.2 on an AT&T Galaxy S3.

When trying to use tasker to shut off wifi after touching an nfc tag I occasionally get the following:
It happens about 50% of the time and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm running on an AT&T Galaxy S3 running Task's AOKP newest build. Is this a tasker issue or something else entirely?

I would like to know if there is a possibility (maybe an app) to make it impossible for me to shut down / turn off my Android phone (in certain periods of the day). I want to not be able to turn off my phone.
(The reason behing it: In the morning every time the alarm goes off, instead of solving the math problem to turn it off, I turn off my phone and continue sleeping )

I installed Timeriffic & it's effective at silencing notifications at night. Unfortunately, my alarm didn't go off this morning. Alternatively, is there another way to silence emails at night & still be able to use the built in alarm (razr).

I've been through pages of forum posts about shutting off automatically updating aps and almost all seem to suggest rooting. I know nothing about such things and really don't feel like risking my phone, new Galaxy Note, to my ineptitude. I've read and re-read the manual too. Yes, I'm sure the answer is probably on here but I couldn't find it, or maybe it went over my head. The problem is I've been watching my data usage and tracked down the extraordinary usage to a slew of aps, all undeleteable and pre-installed by AT&T/Google. I don't want to delete the programs because I may want them at some point, but they're running and updating in the background and using megs. I shut them off within a setting menu and many of them came back later. Most of these aps are things I never even opened. Is there any way to keep these aps from running until *I* want them to?

I have a china phone . has been at the root and I have to replace the boot animation and shut animation .
when I want to change the background , using root explorer I copy framework - res.apk into the sdcard . after extract it , I replace background_holo_dark.png with the image I want in accordance with the resolution and I 've changed the name background_holo_dark.png .
Then I did the zip folder framework - res.apk that I have edited , I replace the zip result into framework - res.apk and then I copy and paste into the system / framework / this . notice " the folder framework - res.apk have already exist , are you sure tu overwrite " , I tap ok but my phone stuck on the display .
I waited a while but the screen does not change . I pull out the battery and reinsert and boot , but stuck on the boot animation .
I tried pressing the home button + vol up + power no recovery option , power + vol down only a test , clear flash , boot , no recovery option , power + vol up + vol down no response .
my phone : mtk6577 mitoa300

I'm looking for the best way to setup a timer for a game. For example I want the timer to tick down, but I want to be able to add to the timer when certain levels are reached etc. I'm just looking for the most efficient way to accomplish this. it only needs to be every second or so. If anyone has any insight on this.

I would like to know how to intercept the event that the apk has been updated in order to launch again my Timer. Indeed, I have a Timer wich is "scheduled AtFixedRate", but when my App is updated through the market, the timer is killed ; and if the user doesn't launch the App, the timer is not started (so my app becomes useless). How could I do to avoid it ? Is there an event to catch the "App updated" ? I searched, tried, but nothing.

I have to give a 20x20 presentation tomorrow and I'm looking for a timer app to help out. 20x20 means that each slide auto-advances after 20 seconds. I'd like to have a timer on my phone that would give me a quick glance of how much time I have left for each slide. Start it at 20 seconds, have it count down and when it hits zero, start over at 20. Seeing as it's just a timer app, I really would rather not pay $2 for StopWatch & Timer, which is the only one I've found that offers a looping timer. Does anyone have any ideas?

In order to get XML data from a server repeatedly, I'm attempting to use AsyncTask and Timer as per Mark Murphy's suggestion. I get the following error:01-07 16:11:26.705: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(729): Caused by: java.lang.Runtime Exception: Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare()I'm using SDK 1.5 with Eclipse on Windows.I've looked in documentation, on StackOverflow and in the Android Developers group, but I'm not clear what's causing the error or how to fix it.I can get the data once - i.e. without Async and Timer - and parse it via SAX without problems.s: I'm quite new to Android.
