General :: Stopping Task After Set Period?
Nov 7, 2011
I want to stop an app Go Weather after it has run for 5 mins to update itself. I can schedule the wifi and the app start but I haven't got a clue about stopping it. I've been using Profile scheduler and task bomb to get this far.

I want to be able to download purchased movies so I can watch them on my iPad on a flight out to Vegas in a few weeks. I realize I may have to convert the movie into something the iPad can use but I can't figure out how to download movies period.

I use Chroma Doze as a white noise generator and I wonder if there was an app which could close it after a set period of time (like the sleep timer most have).
I really like the way Chroma Doze works so reluctant to switch.

Any app that will automatically shutoff my Samsung S4 after a set period of time?
What I use this for is I may be listening to a Netflix or HBO GO movie (yes I know, "listening") and I want the phone to shutoff after 30 minutes.
I was having a hard time finding any app that does this. Google searches just showed me results of shutdown problems, and the apps I came across were to reboot the phone.

On a hTC Desire S a friend is having a problem when opening the Mail app. He can't see any mail in any folders other than trash, and gets the following message when he opens the app: Server response: exceeded the login limit for a 15 minute period. Reduce the frequency of requests to the POP3 server.

how to stop Google Now from displaying weather? I use another weather app and don't need the weather repeated on my Google Now widget, but more importantly I want to down-size the widget (which I can, I use Apex), but I need to get rid of weather in order that the smaller-size widget shows my other cards.

In my apartment, the router is in another room, and it'd be a massive, ugly-looking to run a 100-foot wire from my room to out there. As a result, I've been using wireless routers for my internet, and they haven't been working for crap. I can tether my 4G LTE to my PC and use my Droid internet just fine, but I don't want to do that because of the data cap. I want to tether my Droid and have it connect to my home internet, basically using it as a wireless router to access my home connection, not the Verizon network, and share it with my PC.
But if you turn tethering on, it turns Wi-Fi off. What gives? Is there a way to tether my Droid without disabling Wi-Fi so I can use my tethered Droid to pick up my home wireless connection, so I don't have to worry about exceeding the data cap?

I have an Acer A100 tablet that I've upgraded to ICS (the upgrade went very smoothly, by the way). But under both ICS and the original Honeycomb, the Android OS has an annoying habit of starting a bunch of apps automatically. Facebook, Google Maps, media players and a whole host of apps that I do NOT want to start all by themselves. I found an "Advanced Task Manager" that will check every 5 minutes and kill unwanted apps automatically. But every time I check it there are still half a dozen apps running in the background that I don't want.
If it were just one or two apps, I would simply uninstall them. But it seems like half the factory apps are intent on restarting themselves no matter how many times they're turned off. My Acer has a very small battery, and I suspect I'd get much better battery life if it would only run the apps that I start manually.
Other than email and the system update manager, I really don't want any apps running in the background. And when I turn an app off, I want it to stay off until I restart it. Is there a way to edit the list of programs that start automatically? Do they all have to be disabled individually? I've checked a few of the apps, and don't see any way to disable the "automatic log-in", "check for new data" or whatever each program might call it's annoying insistence on starting whenever it wants to.

OS: Ice Cream Sandwich
Device: Motorola Xoom
I am having issues with a simple service not running correctly. The logcat shows some force stopping on the installed apk. Also the broadcast receiver should listen to android.intent.action.ACTION_POWER_CONNECTED but it is not.
This all worked on froyo 2.2 on a samsung galaxy tab.
Here is the snippet from logcat when I do an 'adb install testService.apk:
Code:
D/AndroidRuntime(15251):
D/AndroidRuntime(15251): >>>>>> AndroidRuntime START com.android.internal.os.RuntimeInit <<<<<<
D/AndroidRuntime(15251): CheckJNI is OFF
D/AndroidRuntime(15251): Calling main entry com.android.commands.pm.Pm
I/ActivityManager( 153): Start proc com.android.defcontainer for service

I was having issues with my TF700 so I did a factory reset, and reinstalled CM 10.1. Unfortunately now the play store was updated to 4.0.26. I think this version is horrible so I uninstalled the updates to it resetting it back to 3.10.14. Cool, except that it keeps silently upgrading back to 4.0.26 after a while. Is there any way to stop it from doing this?

I've thought there might be a shell script I could run, maybe get an app that can run shell scripts from an icon on the home screen--but I don't know what that script would need to be, since it couldn't be about killing a process because that process ID is probably going to be different every time, and I don't know if it would require root. Rooting my phone is not an option.
I'm going to assume though that there's probably no answer to this and that I'll just have to keep going in by hand to force stop the app via prefs/apps/name-of-app/force stop. I just wish these app makers would have an exit option. Twitter and Vine and Growlr are examples of these programs with this kind of behavior. Facebook as well, but that'll just reload itself when you force quit it because it's a special "system app". I mean, I'm not expecting them to exit when I just go to the home screen, that would be silly, but I'd like SOME sort of option to close them besides going through the hassle of force stopping them via the OS preferences.
I want there to be NO chance whatsoever that these programs are going to access data in some way once I'm done using them. I have no problem with whatever the programs want to do when I WANT them running, but when I'm done using them, I want to be able to quit them, and it has nothing to do with wanting to have more free memory.

Since I've been using the cm 10 and 10.1 based roms (4.1.x and 4.2.x, respectively) I've noticed the DSP Manager or Awesome beats audio effects randomly stop effecting the sound. It was noted here:
HTML Code: [URL] .....
That pausing and playing the audio player will re-enable the EQ effects. I normally use Google Music on the HTC Rezound running a variant of CM10.1 (4.2.2) but others have stated other devices and are doing this as well.
I just played with it by force closing the DSP manager process while listening to music. This did not in and of itself stop the EQ effects. Once I reopened the DSP manager app and again stop/start or pause played the effect was re enabled. Simply restarting the DSP manager app did not re enable the effect.

I've been using Task Panel X and Advanced Task manager to kill unneeded tasks and keep memory at a maximum.
Recently, every time I open Task Panel X and then revert back to Home screen I get the HTC logo and then a loading screen while the device sets itself. This happens even if I kill NO tasks.
So my solution was to uninstall Task Panel X and then use just Advanced Task Manager. All the sudden, same result.
Everytime I open either of these apps and then go back to home screen I get a BLACK SCREEN WITH HTC LOGO, THEN A BRIEF (10 SECONDS) LOADING SCREEN. THEN ALL IS NORMAL.

I know this was talked about before at different times but I still have 3 questions.
1. what is the difference between a task killer and a task manager?
2. should we be using one of these apps or not?
3. when you look at the awake time if it is like 70% or 80% and you aren't using the phone a bunch I take it that means something is running, how can you find what is running.and is the awake time that big of deal?

Looking for a guide on how to use task killer. I had task killer on and deleted it. I think I was killing tasks that were needed to keep certain functions running that I use frequently. If someone would take the time to help me understand how to use one, I think I would be much more successful with it.
example - text messaging just stopped ( werrent receiving them ) . Once I took task killer off, everything started working again.

I got the email last night about the new swype beta. I could not find an answer anywhere so I thought I would ask here. The swype version I have has a skin that I found someplace (i can't remember where) do you think this one will expire too or will I be able to keep it? If this is in the wrong place please move it. I know it is not evo specific.

When I type a text message and type a period sometimes the phone automatically puts a space. If it does then the next letter isn't automatically capitalized. But sometimes the phone does not puts a space and I have to put one. If that is the case then the next letter is capitalized.

I am very impressed with Swype and just amazed that it is able to correctly guess what I am trying to type most of the time. But I have a question. What is the correct way to add a period? It seems that when i first started using it, if I used a period it would automatically add a space and capitalize the next word. But it doesn't do that now. I get no space or capitalization and have to add the space manually.

I am planning to release a trial version of my app and am looking into best ways to implement the logic. My lite version of the app would have all the features but will be time restricted. I see a couple of issues:
- Currently there is no mechanism built into android that allows an app to be closed. I see that you can close the main acitivity, but the user can always press the back button and go back into the app.
- After trial period, the user can always un-install the app and re- install it. What do I do to prevent this from happening?
