I have a problem on my smartphone. (For info, it's a motorola atrix, running a Gingerbread stock version (no rooted, no operator specific version)all modifications done after a specific date (new photos, installed apps, send/received messages, preferences changes) disappear after a reboot. Same thing if I delete photos that were on the phone before that date, they seem to be deleted, but after a reboot they come back.
I tried to format, but nothing happened, the memory used stays the same, format is not done though no error message is thrown. The last test will be a factory reset..So I was wondering:
- is my memory storage corrupted ? is there any diagnostic app ?
- or is there any "read only" option in Gingerbread that I didn't notice ?
Do all the changes are saved in cache, so after reboot the cache is lost and I get back to the last "persisted" state ? Or is there a reset to the state at the specific date done at each reboot ?

I'm a bit into customizing my home screens to make it look like the ones on mycolorscreen.com and in those UCCW threads.
But there is one thing thats bugging me, and that is the use of app icons on the home screen. I dont like it, its too messy and too iOS'ish.
Some are replacing the app icons with other custom icons, or removes them completely, but i rarely see what i've been trying to do; to make custom icons that open a meny of apps (in one genre..)
Like one icon for music apps, and one for travel apps etc.
I have tried to fix this using tasker widgets, like this:
and when i click on the music icon, which is a tasker widget, it opens a tasker scene with a meny of 4 music apps:
This works pretty good, but i would like the tasker widget icons to be just icons, no subtext under the icon. There is no way in tasker to do this i think, i've tried to make a task with no name but it is simply not allowed.
I've also tried to make a uccw widget, but hotspots in uccw can open apps and shortcut, not a many of apps..
i know that i can make the launcher remove text under icons, but this doen not apply to my tasker widgets.

To facilitate diagnostics while the app has been deployed, does Android provide any API to facilitate runtime logging? It would be ideal if the app could retrieve all the messages it wrote to the Logging System via the Log API functions.

Is there an app to turn a G1 into a computer diagnostic device or a way to do this from this phone at all? I work on computers as a side business and it would be great if I could use it as such.

I am using a Java application to send UDP packets to an Android device. There I have another Java application that receives these UDP packets and displays its data - very simple. Now I am working on some routing algorithms - therefore it would be nice to know how many hops a UDP packet did since it was send. My idea is to just read out the TTL (time-to-live) value of the packet and display it. Do you know if this is possible with pure Java? The class DatagramPacket doesn't give any hints at all.I guess that this is not possible because this information might already have been removed at a lower layer, but I just want to be sure. :-)

Has anyone tried to do a tcp client server app using the emulator using the pc as a server and the phone as the client?I've got a bit of an issue where its only sending one packet, ie 1491 bytes of data regardless of how much there actually is to send, from the client(Phone) to the server(PC).

I have implemented a routing protocol on an Android 1.6 mobile that uses wireless (ad-hoc) network in order to exchange messages. Now I would like to evaluate it under an energy consumption point of view, the base would be to try to calculate the energy wasted to transmit a single packet, do anybody has any idea how to do that? Software/hardware solutions are welcome! Thanx :)

I've looked for this and I can't find it, so I hope I'm not being stupid . All I want to do is reset the call timers and packet data sent on a monthly basis on my HTC Desire so I can tweak my monthly usage if necessary and not exceed my quota. I can't find a call usage summary anywhere on the phone; all I can find is individual times etc per recipient called.

there are those of us, who due to whatever reason (helmet cams, preference for posture, etc) want to record videos in portrait mode.
What happens (on my sgs2) is that the video records just fine in whatever resolution I pick... but it records it 90 degrees rotated to the right.
The solution that is usually offered is that "you can rotate it after!" yes... but then you have to CROP part of the image and lower the resolution. 1920 x 1080 recordings end up having to be cropped so that half of the view is cut out , or even more if you are maintaining a real aspect ratio.
The questions about "why not just hold it sideways", are just as pointless as the statement by steve jobs telling iphone4 users that they were holding their phones wrong.
is this something that can be remedied ? or has google decided that people should only record videos when their phones are in landscape mode?
i understand that we cant see landscape resolution in portrait mode; but can't we just have a viewport into the camera, but record in properly oriented landscape mode? so that playback on a computer will show the full resolution, even though we will only see part of it on the phone..

Just FYI in case anyone wants to know: For download mode, with the phone turned off, fold the number 1 key on the QWERTY keyboard and the power button simultaneously For recovery mode, with the phone turned off, hold Volume Down, CAmera, and Power simultaneously. You navigate with volume UP/DOWN, select with HOME, Menu toggles to "Manual Mode", whatever that it.

I see that there are only a few posts about this online but no solutions without using apps. I called Verizon and told them the issues. They actually had to go back to way earlier models to solve this issue. To get out of car dock mode do the following:
-Plug in your phone to your charger.
-Turn off your phone.
-Turn on your phone.
-Place a call. While in call, remove your charging cable from your phone (wiggling it a little did the trick for me).
-End the call.
The steering wheel icon should be gone and your phone should be back to normal.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S Plus where, after flashing CWM with Odin, and installing cm11, I'm stuck on an infinite boot animation. But that is not the big issue. I need to enter Recovery Mode, where I have a backup, but the problem is that my Volume Up button is not working, so I can't use the Power Button and Volume Up(I also don't know what could possibly wrong with it) one to get there. So I was wondering if there is some other method to enter Recovery, I suppose by computer. I think that when I used Odin, the device restarted being in Download Mode, and I think that it hasn't to be On to do that.

I guess as I rooted my att GS3 just fine and flashed a new aokp rom and was up and running but started to have intermittent flickering. It prompted me to reflash rom with CM10 and this is were my problems began. I wiped data/factory reset, cache partition,Dalvik cache, mounts & storage format cache, and accidentally format emmc which I think is my problem. I was able to still reboot to CWM recovery but I can't do much more than that, and now I can't get to CWM recovery mode at all. Have tried to boot and reflash from ex/sdcard no good. PC doesn't recognize phone to do recovery from backup and I didn't do internal backup which I now know was dumb. Is there anything I can do to get back up and running or did I screw myself and have to get a new phone?

My Nexus S has been on safe mode on and off for a few months now. It is on safe mode because the volume down button is not working. I say safe mode is on and off because when the volume down button does happen to work, I restart my phone, and safe mode would go away. However, the volume down button would only work for a few minutes so I have to be very quick in rebooting. But safe mode would come back on if I need to reboot it again (phone freezes, etc). It would go back to safe mode because when I need to reboot it again, the volume down button doesn't work.
However, the volume down button is not working completely now and its been like this for like 2 months. I thought my phone would be always on safe mode now. But my phone has rebooted itself twice randomly (never happened before) and on its own and my phone would come out of safe mode, despite the fact that the volume button doesn't work at all. I can't just randomly wait for this random reboot to occur cause it can come at any time, sometimes even weeks. I just had to to restart my phone manually because my phone froze and it's back on safe mode. I was wondering how to make the phone randomly reboot itself on its own.

I just rooted my Nexus S and it was successful.
However, now when I try to install Cyanogenmod I can't get into recovery?? When I go into bootloader, at the bottom it says "Fastboot Status - FAILInvailed Command". And when I click on Recovery, the Google logo shows up with an unlocked image below it. It flashes a few times and then reboots the phone regularly.
