General :: Difference Between Flashing And Installing APK?
Aug 6, 2013
you see apps on xda.. that are required to be flashed.. and are in the form of zip files. Now how are these different from apk files with their regular installation? is it something to do with giving these apps you flash a deeper level permission? if so.. if your rooted can't you just give those apps those permissions after a normal install?

What is the difference between installing an apk in the normal way, and just copying the apk to /data/app and then rebooting?
If i use the copy method, some apps work while most give FCs....

I have a rooted evo running fresh 3.3.3.1 and so far I love it. I used unrevoked 3.21 to do this. My question is does flashing new radio files and pellet files actually increase and or decrease how well the radio works on the phone. I noticed hat once I installed wireless tether that my WiFi signal seems to go down 1 or 2 bars when the laptop is not even 10 feet away. Is thus normal. Anyway I'm very knew to the whole flashing of radio files and just wanted to hear if it does anything or not.

I'm a newbie at all this, and I've read a lot of posts here but they all say how to root or flash. Pardon my simple question, but I just wanted to know what the difference between rooting and flashing is and at what level (hardware/os etc.) do each of these take effect. Also, which method will directly affect what I see/feel from a user's perspective as opposed to underlying OS changes.

Is there a difference between flashing a ROM, say DE03 with recovery 3.1.1, versus applying the ROM directly from SD Card? So far I have flashed the Moment by adding the DE03 3.1.1 Recovery ROM from the laptop's Samsung Moment binary folder. I wonder if I copied that to the root of the SD card, can I just flash it there anytime I want? The reason I want to do this is because it seems that it is suggested to flash back to stock prior to trying out a new ROM, and it would be faster to just load the ROM from SD card than hooking it up to the computer everytime to do this.

Anyone ever had this happen? Downloaded an update after the 2.1 upgrade and I sync'd my contacts with FB. It then deleted all of my contacts. So I deleted Facebook, re-stored all my contacts and reloaded Facebook. However, now it gets as far as installing and it never stops. It just stays on Installing. However, the FB app works fine on the phone itself. Is this a Market glitch? Is there anyway I can purge it from out of my downloads section?

I have installed cyanogenmod 9 in my Sony Live Walkman, and the kernel that comes with it.
Can I install a new kernel (like rage kernel) without having to install the rom (CM9) again? It will work just replacing the kernel?

Surprised this wasn't asked yet as Google made it very clear 4.4 is made for lower memory devices.
As I'm running 4.3 on my Galaxy Nexus I'm faced with updating myself to 4.4 once it's stable and fully functional. However, I'm wondering if I should based on the memory usage. 4.3 started making my phone lag a bit and have slower UI between app switching and such. Similar issues to:
4.3 high RAM usage?
So, how much memory 4.3 uses in comparison to 4.4? It would be interesting to see how Google has based it's claim to a 512MB memory phone being sufficient while 4.3 may not be?

I downloaded Zedge to try and get some cool wallpapers for my Galaxy Nexus. I downloaded a few Nexus themed ones, then the app updated. Now there are no Nexus wallpapers in the App (through search). But, they are still on the Zedge website...
Also, I searched for "Tennessee" wallpapers on the app and found a few, but the same search on the web produces nothing. Why is there a difference between the app and the website?

What are the differences between RUU and AOSP ROMs?
Am I correct that a RUU rom is a fully stock rom that some devs post with or without root? Like basically the latest version of non OTA for your device?
I feel like this is something basic that I should know but just haven't come across it.

Are rooting/unlocking bootloader/flashing custom ROM the same as the idea of Jailbreaking on an iPhone? Does iPhones have custom ROMs too that users can install? What are benefits of jailbreaking an iPhone, what extra features can users gain?

This may be a dumb question, but my SD card is 8GB (same as the internal storage on the phone). When I plug into my PC, it shows two removable storage items. How do I know which one is the phone and which one is the SD card? Is the phone the one with all of the pre-loaded pics and such? Or does that info get moved to the SD card once its formated?

I have an HTC Incredible 2 running Cyanogenmod. I was wondering what the difference is (if any) between the wifi Only script that uses radiooptions 1 and turning off the cell radio through the info options.
When I use the Wifi Only script, I get a high percentage of Cell Standby (even if the battery info is cleared). Whereas if I use the Info method, I get Phone Idle and Wi-Fi as a high percentage. As far as battery usage, I haven't really done a test to see if there seems to be a difference - my PERCEPTION is that the battery usage is better going the info route, but cannot be sure on that. If that were the case for sure, i'd be interested to know if there were a way to script that method.

Android boot modes.I have searched but couldn't get concrete reference.
1) What are the different boot modes of Android?
a) Normal Power up.
b) Recovery Mode
c) Download Mode
i) Fastboot
ii) AP Fastboot
iii) BP SBF Flash
iv) BP Only
v) BP HW Diag & Boot AP
vi) BP Tools
2) What is the difference between these modes?
I think "recovery mode" clears cache, takes "update" from sdcard. But in "Download mode", we can use fastboot protocol to "Flash" the device.

I was just wondering why the app size in android (Settings > Applications > Manage applications) is different to the size in Titanium backup (Overview of app storage use) and which one is the correct size?
eg. According to titanium backup, the total size of Jelly defense is 51.6MB whereas android says that it's 112KB
Angry Birds size is 18.5MB according to titanium but only 1.30MB in android.
Skype is 16.7MB according to titanium but only 2.11MB in android.

Is it just me and my device, or is the Google Plus app rubbish for everyone? Jitters and lags just when scrolling down the feed. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S3, and the problem persists across ROMs, and enabling/disabling "Force GPU rendering" makes no difference.

so i've been in many roms, custom and stock...and since i know cyanogen i think they have done the ''move aplications to sd'' in every rom. i remember flashing one cm6 once on my x10 mini and see in features: default app2sd in cyanogenmod settings, so i dunno why people keep asking about app2sd or link2sd suport on roms like cm7 or cm9
so...whats the diference between moving an app to sd card from setting and do it froms app2sd?
it is really necesary on gingerbread and ics?
if it so...works better on ext partitions or fat ones?
