whats the difference between a ROM and a kernel
U8150
I use Baked Snack 1.7 and I tried the deodexed version of the OTA but noticed no change. Infact I found the OTA would stutter sometimes when scrolling. Also compared to CM6 and Neterchy kernel 4.1.9.1 I don't see it being same or better besides it being official. I know pretty soon the devs will have their own version but for now I don't see a reason to update.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest version of fresh last week and im loving it... My battery life is amazing now. I was just wondering if there is a big difference in performance between Fresh with the stock kernel & fresh with a custom. Did i half-ass it by only installing the new rom with no kernel? what about that set cpu app that people were using with unrevocked when the evo came out... Anyone using that still with their custom roms or is it unnecessary?
View 1 Replies View Related1) What is the difference between kernel and a ROM? How do I know what kernel I am on? I know I am running the SholesMod ROM, but I am considering changing to another ROM. I seem to have FC's quite often and am trying to fix that. If I want to change a ROM will I need to change the kernel to make sure they are compatible?
2) I have SP Recovery installed. Is this part of the kernel? Is this installed in a separate place from the kernel/ROM? I'd like to feel assured that if I am installing a new kernel/ROM and something goes wrong, I don't have to worry about my SP Recovery being affected. But should I?...............
3) Nandroid backup... does this include everything on the device? Kernel, ROM, AND Recovery Mode?
I'm a newbie to hacking the Droid, but back in my PSP days, I know that the Recovery mode was stored on the same drive as the system files, and if you make a misstep when flashing a new firmware, you could lose recovery access. I'm just wondering where the recovery is located in the phones file system, and if I should really be concerned when flashing ROMs/kernels. Also, is there any way I could redirect it to load recovery from the memory stick, if the default recovery cannot load, just as a failsafe? Or if I lose recovery, could I somehow flash a new recovery via USB?
Sorry I'm new to all this root stuff, and was just wondering what is the difference between roms and kernels and stuff.

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhere I have got right now on my phone, which is:
1. I updated to stock 2.1 using the sprint update tool.
2. I followed the video tutorial to root the phone
3. then i used joey's page (http://www.joeyconway.com/sdx/custom/index.php) to install the his kernel (joeykrim-SDX-kernel v2.0.4 (includes root)).
I have done nothing else to the phone but this and removing a couple of bloatware apps (i checked the list of permitted deletions before i removed anything.) I have not installed a new recovery..at least i dont think that I did as part of one of the other operations I performed (as an aside, i am not really sure what the custom recovery is or what it is used for, so i didnt install it...i guess i need to read up more...)
So that is where I am..but i have a couple of questions.
1) i am now having issues with my wifi connection - the signal reception is very spotty in areas where i should have atleast 2 bars of reception, and the wifi often cuts out completely....Is there any know corellation between joey's kernel and this wifi issue? I have searched the forums and have found nothing that answers this.
2) Is there an easy way to get back to the stock kernel? I have read that i can get back to stock everything by using the sprint download center where I did my original 2.1 update. But is there a way to get back to just the stock kernel without wiping the phone?
Keep seeing this mentioned in rom features and haven't been able to find the difference.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSurprised this wasn't asked yet as Google made it very clear 4.4 is made for lower memory devices.
As I'm running 4.3 on my Galaxy Nexus I'm faced with updating myself to 4.4 once it's stable and fully functional. However, I'm wondering if I should based on the memory usage. 4.3 started making my phone lag a bit and have slower UI between app switching and such. Similar issues to:
4.3 high RAM usage?
So, how much memory 4.3 uses in comparison to 4.4? It would be interesting to see how Google has based it's claim to a 512MB memory phone being sufficient while 4.3 may not be?
I downloaded Zedge to try and get some cool wallpapers for my Galaxy Nexus. I downloaded a few Nexus themed ones, then the app updated. Now there are no Nexus wallpapers in the App (through search). But, they are still on the Zedge website...
Also, I searched for "Tennessee" wallpapers on the app and found a few, but the same search on the web produces nothing. Why is there a difference between the app and the website?
What are the differences between RUU and AOSP ROMs?
Am I correct that a RUU rom is a fully stock rom that some devs post with or without root? Like basically the latest version of non OTA for your device?
I feel like this is something basic that I should know but just haven't come across it.
I currently have bekit 1ghz kernet installed, but I was interested in trying out some other kernels. Can I just install them via Rom Manager over the first kernel? Or is there some kind of uninstall process I should use first?

you see apps on xda.. that are required to be flashed.. and are in the form of zip files. Now how are these different from apk files with their regular installation? is it something to do with giving these apps you flash a deeper level permission? if so.. if your rooted can't you just give those apps those permissions after a normal install?

This may be a dumb question, but my SD card is 8GB (same as the internal storage on the phone). When I plug into my PC, it shows two removable storage items. How do I know which one is the phone and which one is the SD card? Is the phone the one with all of the pre-loaded pics and such? Or does that info get moved to the SD card once its formated?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an HTC Incredible 2 running Cyanogenmod. I was wondering what the difference is (if any) between the wifi Only script that uses radiooptions 1 and turning off the cell radio through the info options.
When I use the Wifi Only script, I get a high percentage of Cell Standby (even if the battery info is cleared). Whereas if I use the Info method, I get Phone Idle and Wi-Fi as a high percentage. As far as battery usage, I haven't really done a test to see if there seems to be a difference - my PERCEPTION is that the battery usage is better going the info route, but cannot be sure on that. If that were the case for sure, i'd be interested to know if there were a way to script that method.
Android boot modes.I have searched but couldn't get concrete reference.
1) What are the different boot modes of Android?
a) Normal Power up.
b) Recovery Mode
c) Download Mode
i) Fastboot
ii) AP Fastboot
iii) BP SBF Flash
iv) BP Only
v) BP HW Diag & Boot AP
vi) BP Tools
2) What is the difference between these modes?
I think "recovery mode" clears cache, takes "update" from sdcard. But in "Download mode", we can use fastboot protocol to "Flash" the device.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering why the app size in android (Settings > Applications > Manage applications) is different to the size in Titanium backup (Overview of app storage use) and which one is the correct size?
eg. According to titanium backup, the total size of Jelly defense is 51.6MB whereas android says that it's 112KB
Angry Birds size is 18.5MB according to titanium but only 1.30MB in android.
Skype is 16.7MB according to titanium but only 2.11MB in android.
