import android.os.Bundle;
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {

I'm posting this to share the lessons I learned while working with IntentService. IntentService has a single constructor that takes a string argument "name". The documentation has no description of what name is used for. In looking at the sources, I found that its only use is in naming the worker thread for the IntentService. This thread is named IntentService [name].
I initially implemented the constructor of the derived class to also take a String argument and passed it along to the derived class. This is wrong. This will cause the startService() call to generated a java.lang.InstantiationException in the application containing the service i.e. you don't get the exception in the application calling startService(). A clue to the actual problem is a little further up in the logs:"newInstance failed: no <init>()"
The derived class must have a Default constructor and that constructor must call super() passing a string for the name component of the worker thread name.
public class MyIntentService extends IntentService {
public MyIntentService() { super("MyIntentService");
} @Override
protected void onHandleIntent(Intent intent) {
// Handle events on worker thread here }

I'm trying to create class with generics that will have ability to serialize its state using Parcelable interface.
The problem is that class has to contain constructor with single parameter - Parcel, but in my case I need to create class with additional parameters.
Besides, Parcelable.Creator doesn't allow to use generics.
Here is an example:
public class Sample<T> { ...
public Sample(Context ctx, SomeInterface iface, Parcel parcel) {...}
...}
What is the best practice to do it?

I had come across a code snippet which calls for an activity without referring to any context. Before, i was considering that context is used to tell about the calling component. But as i came see that another component can be called without any reference to context, it makes me wonder what purpose it might be serving. please put some light on it.
Here is the code which calls for an activity without referring to 'context'

I don't remember my DroidX always doing this, but recently after I hang-up from a call it shows the "Call Time XX:XX" in the center of the screen and I can't do anything until it goes away, which is generally 5-8 seconds. Hitting Home, Back, etc does nothing and tapping on the screen or the message also does nothing.Is this a setting I can disable? I can look at the recent calls to get the length of call if I need to see it, so I don't need the dramatic pause to give me this info.

I've had two HTC hero's on T-Mobile, and on my old one I used to be able to check the time I made or received a call on the 'call history' display. I had that phone stolen and got a replacement that is identical but running newer software, I think. All is great, except for the fact that it no longer displays the time a call was made or received in the history. I see this as a very important feature to have on a phone, so how can I get it to work properly? At present it just says the date - no time.

I have a huge codebase. I am not very clear about its design as documents are rear to find.
Is there any tool available to construct the class diagram from the code? I need to know the interactions between the classes and relations between them. If there is any such tool where i can give the entire code as input and get the class diagram as out put, it will be best for my understanding.

I had a bunch of code in an activity that displays a running graph of some external data. As the activity code was getting kind of cluttered, I decided to extract this code and create a GraphView class:
public class GraphView extends LinearLayout {
public GraphView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
super(context, attrs);
LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)
context.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
inflater.inflate(R.layout.graph_view, this, true);
}
public void start() {
// Perform initialization (bindings, timers, etc) here
}
public void stop() {
// Unbind, destroy timers, } }
Moving stuff into this new LinearLayout-derived class was simple. But there was some lifecycle management code associated with creating and destroying timers and event listeners used by this graph (I didn't want this thing polling in the background if the activity was paused, for example). Coming from a MS Windows background, I kind of expected to find overridable onCreate() and onDestroy() methods or something similar, but I haven't found anything of the sort in LinearLayout (or any of its inherited members). Having to leave all of this initialization code in the Activity, and then having to pass it into the view seemed like it defeated the original purpose of encapsulating all of this code into a reusable view. I ended up adding two additional public methods to my view: start() and stop(). I make these calls from the activity's onResume() and onPause() methods respectively. This seems to work, but it feels like I'm using duct tape here. Does anyone know how this is typically done?

Problem: I have one app that let's you lock the device using Device Administration. One of my users had some conflicts with my app and another. He then removed Device Administration and uninstalled my app, rebooted his phone, and now he cannot access his phone.
He of course cannot use my app to change the password now (since it's uninstalled).
His phone is stock 2.2 LG Optimus V, Virgin Mobile, Rooted.
Question:I'm needing to find a way that my user can now change his lock code.
I need:
1.) to know an internal class (from com.android.internal) that I could use within an app to change the lock code (just like the system settings do).
2.) to know a command I can use with adb shell to remove or change the phone lock code.
3.) to know the location of the file that stores the lock code information.
