Android :: Update View When AsyncTask Finished In Service

Oct 12, 2010

I have an activity which starts a service. In the service there is a network lookup in an AsyncTask. Results from the lookup are saved to a database.

The activity queries to database and shows the newest entries. But at the very first run the database is empty, so there is nothing to show. In this case I would like to show a progress dialog to the user while the network lookup is taking place. I would like to dismiss the progress dialog when the first lookup is finished.

Is there a way to access the progress dialog created in the activity from the service? Or how to do it?

Android :: Stop Service After AsyncTask Finished

Jun 26, 2010

I have a service, that requests another class, which launches an AsyncTask

Service->Weather Class->Execute Method->Asynctask->Execute

this is launched in the service by

new Weather(this).execute(); // the execute is a method of the class, not of the AsyncTask

how do I detect in Service that the AsyncTask finished so I can call stopSelf?

On the official documentations it is stated that Note that services, like other application objects, run in the main thread of their hosting process and AsyncTask only works if it is executed in the UIThread.

So is it possible to use AsyncTask in a Service class? code...

Android :: Call AsyncTask Methods From Another Class - Service - Callbacks?

Jun 1, 2010

I was wondering if it's possible to call specific methods defined within the AsynTask class from another class and/or service ?

In my specific case I have a Service playing some sounds, but the sound is selected from a List with available sounds...

When a sounds is selected it is downloaded from my home server, this takes some time (not much, let's say around the 3-4 seconds, the sounds/effects aren't big in size)...

So my problem at the moment is that I have a service to play those sounds, and when I select one I wanted to show a progressdialog... The way (if I understood correctly) is to use an AsyncTask, but the only thing the AsyncTask will do is telling my Service to play a specific sound from my server... So there is no "callback" from the service to the Asynctask...

How can I call a running AsyncTask, which sits in another class, and tell him all work is done and thus he can stop showing the ProgressDialog ? Or am I over-engineering it and there are other ways ?

Android :: Trap In TabHost When AsyncTask Delays Set Content View At Activity Startup

Nov 3, 2009

I've got a tab host activity started from a home screen shortcut. When my application starts it downloads information from a server using an AsyncTask. In the onPostExecute method of the AsyncTask I call setContentView to display the TabHost. When I start the homescreen shortcut by tapping on the shortcut using my finger everything works as expected, I download the information from the server and display the TabHost with the information in the tabs. However starting the application by navigating to the shortcut with the mouse wheel and then clicking on the shortcut with the mouse wheel leads to a trap in the framework code as soon as my application starts. This looks like a simple fix since mCurrentView is null at the time that this method is called - can this issue be addressed? Does anyone know of any workarounds?

Android :: Instance Variable Of Activity Not Being Set OnPostExecute Of AsyncTask - Return Data From AsyncTask

Jul 28, 2010

I'm trying to figure out the correct way to create an AsyncTask to retrieve some data from the internet and then to take that data and bundle it up in an Intent and pass it to a new activity(A list display). So in the first activity I just have an EditText and Button. In the event of an OnClick the task should be called and when it is finished the data should be bundled inside an Intent and passed to the next Activity. The problem is when I take the results from onPostExecute and set them to an instance variable of the main activity, that instance variable is still null when the task is complete. Here is the barebones version of the code:

CODE:...........

When I debug the application I see onPostExecute does contain a valid PlacesList full of results, so why is the instance variable places set to null after the task is executed? I am going about "returning data" from an AsyncTask incorrectly?

Android :: How To Tell A Thread From A Previous Instance Of Your Activity Has Finished

Oct 31, 2010

I'm writing a bitmap editor and I'm trying to write an autosave feature. When onPause is called, I write the application state to an autosave file. As this takes between 0.1s and 1.5s, I've been advised this IO operation be performed in a background thread.

In the onCreate method of my activity, I check to see if the autosave file exists and, if it does, I open it.

Are there any scenarios I have to consider where the user can somehow leave the activity, the autosave thread starts and the user can return to the activity before the thread has finished? If so, how can I detect this and wait for the thread to finish before I check the state of the autosave file?

I was going to make it that, when the user backs out of my activity, they're asked to wait a second while the data is saved. This seems OK, but I can't do this when my activity is interrupted by something like a phone call.

Also, I'm a bit confused about how multiple versions of the same activity can be started as this makes dealing with autosaving more complex. Is there a way to make sure only one instance of my activity is allowed to run at a time?

Android :: Activity With ProgressBar - Service - Update The Progress?

Dec 28, 2009

this is the current state/situation: I have an Activity which binds a Service which creates AsyncTasks which downloads various web resources. That works well, but of course the ProgressBar shows nothing. Previously i had an Activity which created an AsyncTask which downloaded some stuff. The AsyncTask got the View which holds the ProgressBar. So i could update the progress using onProgressUpdate and publishProgress. Obviously this doesn't work any longer because I have no reference to the ProgressBar.

Android :: Update Information In Activity From Background Service?

Mar 18, 2010

I am trying to create a simple Android application that has a ActivityList of information, when the application starts, I plan to start a Service that will be constantly calculating the data (it will be changing) and I want the ActivityList to be in sync with the data that the service is calculating for the life of the app. How can I set up my Activity to be listening to the Service? Is this the best way to approach this problem? For example, if you imagine a list of stock prices - the data would be being changed regularly and need to be in sync with the (in my case) Service that is calculating/fetching the data constantly.

Samsung Galaxy S :: Get Rid Of Swype Keyboard After I Finished Typing?

Oct 8, 2010

I love using swype: quick and efficient. But in some programs I use (e.g. Tasker / Jotro) the swype keyboard pops up when I click a text field (as it should), but if I'm done, sometimes it shows a "done" button on the swype keyboard itself (and when I click on that, the swype keyboard dissappears), but sometimes, there isn't a done key on the keyboard (only an enter key which gives a new line in the text field I'm editing) and I can't scroll in the program to the save/done button in the program itself to save what I just typed. Does someone know whether there is a quick way to get rid of the Swype keyboard after I finished typing?

My (frustrating workaround) is to go to Swype options, press back, and the swype keyboard is gone.
