Android :: Activity With ProgressBar - Service - Update The Progress?
Dec 28, 2009
this is the current state/situation: I have an Activity which binds a Service which creates AsyncTasks which downloads various web resources. That works well, but of course the ProgressBar shows nothing. Previously i had an Activity which created an AsyncTask which downloaded some stuff. The AsyncTask got the View which holds the ProgressBar. So i could update the progress using onProgressUpdate and publishProgress. Obviously this doesn't work any longer because I have no reference to the ProgressBar.

I have a service that downloads something from the Internet, it shows progress in notifications and in MyActivity (only when MyActivity is on foreground of course). How should the service post the progress to MyActivity? I know this could be done somehow with IBind but can I just simply do this in MyActivity:
MySevice.myActivity = this; startService(new Intent(....));
From MyService I can now call MyActivity's methods because I have a static reference to it in MySevice.myActivity, so I can call e.g. myActivity.sendProgress(63).

I've been trying to get my progress bar view to work in my file scanner application, and I'm thoroughly stumped by the proper combination of Activities, Services, Threads, and Handlers. Here's the structure: My Activity contains a Horizontal-styled ProgressBar. On menu item click, I spawn a Service which, onCreate(), which is where I want to be able to update the progress bar. what am I missing?.............

I am trying to create a simple Android application that has a ActivityList of information, when the application starts, I plan to start a Service that will be constantly calculating the data (it will be changing) and I want the ActivityList to be in sync with the data that the service is calculating for the life of the app. How can I set up my Activity to be listening to the Service? Is this the best way to approach this problem? For example, if you imagine a list of stock prices - the data would be being changed regularly and need to be in sync with the (in my case) Service that is calculating/fetching the data constantly.

An application I'm building uses a local Service for downloading files from the web to the phone's SD card. In this app users can browse lists of books, and read them while online. A user can also download a pdf copy of a book for offline viewing. To handle downloads I'm using a locally bound Service. I do not want this Service to run all the time, only when downloading files. So that the Service can shut itself down when its tasks are complete, I am not binding to the service, rather I'm sending an "enqueue for download" command through the Intent passed to Context.startService.
Books available for download are shown in a list. A user can choose to download a book by clicking on its row in the list. On download, I need to show download progress using a ProgressBar on the actual book list row. I need to also show, on the rows, if a book is enqueued for download, or if its download has completed or failed. The books can be shown in different activities throughout the application--in search, or in the user's list of favorite books, for example. When the books are shown in different places, these are not the same objects, but they are uniquely identified by their bookId...............

I like to do some long running initializing work in a remote service, and during that, a progress dialog shall be shown. So basicly, I invoke ProgressDialog.show, run a oneway method of the service with a callback to be invoked when it's finished, and in the callback dismiss the dialog. I expected the service method to work in it's own process while the activity shows the progress dialog. But what happens instead (according to debugger and logs) is: ProgressDialog.show and service method invocation return immediately, then the service method is processed, and finally the progress dialog is shown for a few milliseconds right before it's dismissed. Even a "not responding" error might occur during that. If I invoke the service method in an own thread, which (as it's to be expected) is finished long before the service method is done, everything works fine. But I don't get why this is necessary. Why does a remote service method block the Activity thread? This even happens if the service method only does a Handler.post and returns immediately.
Simplyfied code overview: Activity: public void onStart() { startService(...); bindService(...);}

My application involves doing some calculation on the first activity and sending the information to the second activity. So while the calculation is being done , I want to show a activity / progress / busy indicator on the first activity , before going to the second one. Is there any way of doing so, or an sample code that does the same. I was also looking out for the same by calling the calculation method after a delay so that the progress bar is shown first before the calculation is done , but this has also failed.

I am trying to update TextView in my Activity with text messages from DatagramServer ( see below) The problem I have is that "backgound UDP server receives plenty of traffic, but onProgessUpdate is ever executed only once so only the first of the messages appear in the TextView.
public class MyActivity extends Activity {
TextView txtStatus; // txtStatus initialized
new BackgroundAsyncTask().execute();
public class BackgroundAsyncTask extends
AsyncTask<Void, String, Void> {
public static final String SERVERIP = "127.0.0.1";
// 'Within' the emulator! public static final int SERVERPORT = 2222;
private DatagramSocket socket;
protected Void doInBackground(Void... params) {
try { InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName(SERVERIP);
Log.d("UDP", "S: Waiting for connection...");
socket = new DatagramSocket(SERVERPORT, serverAddr);
while(true) { byte[] buf = new byte[1024];
DatagramPacket packet = new DatagramPacket(buf, buf.length);
Log.i("telemetry server", " waiting for packet");
socket.receive(packet);
Log.i("received", new Integer(packet.getLength()).toString());
Log.i("UDPServer received:", new String(packet.getData()));
publishProgress(new String(packet.getData()));
} } catch (Exception e) { Log.i("Dbg server", e.getMessage());

I would like to know if it is possible to get 'leftover' calls to AsyncTask#onProgressUpdate after AsyncTask#onPostExecute has been called? I am setting text on the same TextView using both of them, and I don't want to set text such as "Done!" and then have it overwritten at a later point by text such as "Almost there - 90%"Also, I am assuming that the onProgressUpdate method works similar to a SwingWorker method in that multiple calls to publishProgress may stack up before a call to onProgressUpdate occurs. I would really like to know where the "newer" and "older" progress updates are on the parameter - aka are the newest updates at position 0 in the parameter, or at position progress.length?

In my android application, I am using the tab view and so I have two tabs: parameters and results. the user enters the various parameters on the first tab and then switches to the second tab to view the results. i have a service that performs some long-running calculations. the user enters parameters on the first tab and hits 'calculate'. They can make adjustments and hit 'recalculate' and the service is updated with the new parameters.
As these calculations progress, I want the user to be able to switch to the results tab to view the results of the latest calculation. They would then view the results and be able to switch back to the parameters tab to make adjustments. I can think of two approaches: register the 'results tab' with the service and when the service reaches a milestone, it calls directly to the 'results tab'. have a timer running in the 'results tab' and have it query against the bound service on a regular interval and update accordingly.

I currently have a tab layout with 2 tabs, one tab with a list view and one with the option make strings so I can add them in the list view. Both tabs have their own activity because this made the code much more structured, and I dont have to repeat my self later.
Lets say im in the tab that offer me to create an string, and i press the update list button, how do I update the list view without startActivity()? If i use startActivity(), it starts List.java, and instead of displaying the list in the list view tab, it takes full screen, which defies the purpose of the tab view. In other words, the startActivity() steals the focus from the tab view of the list, and sends it fulscreen.
I want to update the activity in my list view tab, without starting a new activity that goes to fullscreen, and doesnt update the one in the tab.

I have an Android activity that, onCreate(), will query a database and display the query results in textviews on the UI.The problem that I am having is at some point, users can open another activity and update the database. When they go back to the original activity, I would like for the text views to update with the new database information (so, I will re query the database and display the info).Another thing that I am willing to do is to take the new input from the user (in the new activity) and directly update the textview in the existing activity (without having the existing activity re-query the database). But I'm not sure how to do something like that either.Can someone please inform me on the best way to go about doing this? The only solution that I have found so far has to do with broadcast receivers, but I'm not sure if that is best suited for what I have to do.

In Virgil Dobjanschi's talk, "Developing Android REST client applications" (link here), he said a few things that took me by surprise. Including:
Don't run http queries in threads spawned by your activities. Instead, communicate with a service to do them, and store the information in a ContentProvider.
Use a ContentObserver to be notified of changes.
Always perform long running tasks in a Service, never in your Activity.
Stop your Service when you're done with it.
I understand that he was talking about a REST API, but I'm trying to make it fit with some other ideas I've had for apps. One of APIs I've been using uses long-polling for their chat interface. There is a loop http queries, most of which will time out. This means that, as long as the app hasn't been killed by the OS, or the user hasn't specifically turned off the chat feature, I'll never be done with the Service, and it will stay open forever. This seems less than optimal.
Long question short:
For a chat application that uses long polling to simulate push and immediate response, is it still best practice to use a Service to perform the HTTP queries, and store the information in a ContentProvider?
