How do I completely remove rather than rename unwanted apps? Specifically, what commands have to be entered into the shell? And where can I find a listing of the apps in rom? I am rooted and have some knowledge of adb and the android sdk. here are just a number of the apps I never will use, so I would prefer to free up memory.

New to Android. I always used a app called Magicall on my WM device. I want to be able to block specific contacts, unknown number or anonymous numbers and also specific contacts for SMS. I can see I have the option to send a contact direct to voicemail but don't have the same facility for unknown/anonymous callers and nothing to block SMS. Any recommendations for an app that works with 2.1? (I'm using a HTC Desire)

A random app just appeared in My Apps in the Android Market app.
There is no uninstall button, nor can I find it in /system/app or /data/app. It does not appear in Titanium Backup either.
It is called karoges, by cloudnine.
I am worried if this is some kind of malware.
Running 2.3.6 Gingerbread on Samsung Galaxy S 4G. Valhalla Final ROM.

How do I stop Google play store and play services from running non stop in the background?? I have my location turned off, and privacy guard turned on, but somehow play services and Google maps can get my location? Google play store runs something called "daily hygiene"and all three of these apps restart themselves when I kill them. I don't need play services running, when only the location part of it is running. When I try and disable autostart, receivers, freeze them, use advanced freeze through ROM toolbox, they either revert back instantly, or as soon as the phone reboots.how to get this crap to stop running when it's not being used, and stop getting location, or whatever other things I'm trying to keep private?

I am looking for a bit of info and/or a tut on how to remove apps with the rooted 2.1 for the Eris ( BTW thanks to all the dev's for their hard work). I have installed the rooted 2.1 with out a hitch. I have been looking around to find out how to uninstall a few of the apps (amazon, stocks, tweet) and found people that say to use SDK's ADB or terminal. I understand what the terminal is and the SDK that google offers is but not the ADB. I also understand that there is a chance to brick by removing the wrong things. So I don't want to just make a careless mistake.

Is there a way to delete unwanted apps on a stock phone? I got an update last week and it came with some stupid trial games that I don't want. When I go into app management to remove it, there is no unistall option. I hate how we are forced to keep some apps.

My desire was taking approx 40mins to power down so I installed an task killer to show me what was running in the back round. I was astounded approx 25 apps were continually running in the backround so by killing these apps powering down now only take 15secs max. However, ive become a bit obsessed with this task killer. i keep checking what is running and there are things on there that i have never used such as "you tube", "news" "talk" etc. Could someone please point me in the right direction about how i stop these apps from running without me requesting them too? I know a lot of say task killers are not essential but it has certainly shown me the reason why my desire was running so slowly. Also one more thing, after powering off my phone, when restarting, ALL the apps automatically start running then? Is there a startup menu that can be editted for example?

I have an Acer A100 tablet that I've upgraded to ICS (the upgrade went very smoothly, by the way). But under both ICS and the original Honeycomb, the Android OS has an annoying habit of starting a bunch of apps automatically. Facebook, Google Maps, media players and a whole host of apps that I do NOT want to start all by themselves. I found an "Advanced Task Manager" that will check every 5 minutes and kill unwanted apps automatically. But every time I check it there are still half a dozen apps running in the background that I don't want.
If it were just one or two apps, I would simply uninstall them. But it seems like half the factory apps are intent on restarting themselves no matter how many times they're turned off. My Acer has a very small battery, and I suspect I'd get much better battery life if it would only run the apps that I start manually.
Other than email and the system update manager, I really don't want any apps running in the background. And when I turn an app off, I want it to stay off until I restart it. Is there a way to edit the list of programs that start automatically? Do they all have to be disabled individually? I've checked a few of the apps, and don't see any way to disable the "automatic log-in", "check for new data" or whatever each program might call it's annoying insistence on starting whenever it wants to.

U mainly wanted to root to remove the unwanted apps preinstalled on my phone because I was tired of running out of space. I rooted successfully via Odin. downloaded root installer and removed the unwanted apps. Then I started playing around with other apps. But now when I try to use any of them I get "app was denied super user permission" and telling me I need to be rooted. I tried factory reset but that didn't work. In fact, I now can't even use app uninstaller to remove those apps.

After attempting to download a few apps (actually a bunch of language apps), ie, after successfully downloaded only 5 of the bunch that I selected on Google Play, my Evo V 4G Virgin crashed and restarted.
After this shutting down and restarting repeated a few times, I uninstalled all new apps and force stopped and disabled Google Play... to no avail.
"Google Play Store is not responding. Would you like to close it?" message pops up twice and then the phone shuts down and restarts again continuously.
Did I get a virus?
These are the apps that downloaded before it started to do this:
Italian Lessons and Flashcards
Japanese Lessons + Flashcards
Chinese Dictionary+Flashcards
Japanese Word a Day Widget
Italian Word a Day Widget
BTW, after a couple of months I had the phone, every time the phone is restarted about 2/3 of my apps blank out (ie, replaced by the generic green Android icons) for a few minutes before they are all reloaded up. Why is this happening? Is this normal? Is this related to what's happening?

My DroidX has several pieces of bloatware from Verizon or Motorola. I don't mind giving up a little Ram space for them, but many are running all of the time. After you kill them they come back to life. Why does Music, Maps, SkypeMobile, CityId etc. need to run when I haven't even started them? I "assume" that they are just waiting until the end of a time period (an hour I hope rather than a second) to check if the need to "call home". If they are doing much they are eating battery time which isn't as good as I would like. I realize that I would have to root my Droid to remove the apps. Is there an easier ways to keep them from running?

If I disable the google talk and google mail, will I cause myself any problems. Just to clarify. I use IM+ for my MSN chat and I use my own pop3 server for mail which is working very well on my Hero. If I get rid of gmail is it going to be a problem? I am trying to get rid of any un-necessary rubbish from startup.

I have a TabActivity, each tab holds an activity. At some point I'd like to 'refresh' the tabs. I'd basically like to restart each activity in the tabs. I'm not sure how to do this. Calling:
CODE:.........
Removes the tabs, but the activities still seem to be in alive, in limbo. How can I get them to really quit?

So I wanted to use Media Players to play two different songs, and I wanted to always start a new song from the beginning. This could be unrelated, but I also just suddenly ran out of internal flash space when I hadn't just installed anything. I'm not sending a bunch of unreferenced Media Players to a page file or anything, am I?

I am facing a very mysterious Problem. I am using a ListView with CheckBoxes that can be clicked to select people. The row layout is the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <CheckBox android:focusable="false" android:onClick="onSelectPerson" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:layout_marginRight="5dip" android:layout_marginLeft="5dip"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/person_name" android:text="test" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:textSize="18dip" android:layout_marginLeft="5dip"/> </LinearLayout>
As long as the amount of rows doesen't exceed the screen size (-> no scrolling) everything works just fine. But as soon as I have more rows then the screen size (-> some rows are hidden and have to be scrolled to). I have a very mysterious phenomenon: If I check the top row and scroll down some of the previously hidden rows are randomly checked too. If I scroll up again, again some of the before hidden rows are randomly vhecked (the CheckBox I clicked in first place may or may not still be checked). Also the registered onSelectPerson callback is only called for the CheckBoxes I really click. The other CheckBoxes just change their state to "checked" without calling the callback method. I have the same phenomenom on the Archos IT 5 and the Nexus One. This must have something to do with the ListView implementation but I can't quite figure out what the problem is.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to restart LogCat without rebooting eclipse? Every once in a while LogCat will just die while I'm working and it seems like there should be a to get it working again. I've tried restarting the adb task, but that was just a haphazard guess at a solution.

I have a TabActivity. Each tab points to a sub activity. Works great.
Is there any clever way to refresh one of the activity tabs? I just want to 'restart' the activity in tab #3 for example. Not sure of a good way to do this other than building in refresh support to the activity itself, or clearing ALL the tabs and recreating all of them.

I have a service which holds on to a wakelock and the code is similar to this,
public class WakeLockService extends Service {
PowerManager.WakeLock wl;
@Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub return null;
} public void onCreate() {
PowerManager pm = (PowerManager) getSystemService (Context.POWER_SERVICE);
wl = pm.newWakeLock (PowerManager.PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK, "My Tag");
wl.acquire();
} public void onDestroy() {
wl.release();
}
For past two days, my phone has been restarting randomly. Today it was worse, it kept restarting until I uninstalled the app. I tried to search about this behaviour online and found that too many wakelocks may coz the phone to restart. Can there be any other reason? Is the above code right? Should make wl as a final variable? Does the service call onDestroy method when phone shuts down? I am using a broadcastreceiver to start my service at boot up as well.

I am making an Android game with an Activity called Game, a SurfaceView called GameView and a Thread called GameThread. The Game's onCreate(), I make a new GameView, which makes a new GameThread, where all the game logic and canvas drawing is carried out. However, I'm having some lifecycle difficulties. When I press back and restart it, it works fine, but when I press home and restart it, all I see is a blank screen. Here are the GameView's onSurfaceCreated() and onSurfaceDestroyed(): @Override public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) {
mThread.mRunning = true;
mThread.mWidth = getWidth();
if(mThread.mWidth > 550) mThread.mWidth = 550;
mThread.mHeight = getHeight();
try {
mThread.start();
} catch(IllegalThreadStateException e).......

I want my application to resume what it is doing regardless of where I press the icon (Home screen, app picker, or running apps). Right now if my app is in the background and I press the icon on the home screen, the app restarts with my Main Activity. Once here, if I press the back button the app resumes from the activity it left off before it was put in the background. If it's running in the background and I hold the home button and select my app from the current running apps, it resumes correctly. How do I avoid my app from going to my Main activity when it is selected from the Home screen or app picker? I have tried adding the following in my Manifest XML file, but it doesn't help: <activity android:name=".Main" android:launchMode="singleTask" android:alwaysRetainTaskState="true" android: label= "@ string /app_name">
