Android :: Register Button Click And Take Action Based On Radio Selection
Sep 1, 2009
I'm trying to teach myself how to write android apps and I'm having trouble registering a button click and taking actions based on which radio button is selected at the time. This is a simple tip calculator:
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.EditText;
import android.widget.RadioButton;
import android.widget.TextView;
import android.widget.RadioGroup;
import android.view.View;
public class TipCalc extends Activity implements RadioGroup.OnCheckedChangeListener,View.OnClickListener

I was writing a simple test application. There are two radio buttons within the app. There id's are "radio_red" and "radio_blue". I wanted to create an onClickListener event that read the text associated to the button and then returned a basic "Right" or "Wrong" toast.So far no joy. Here is my code snippet. I've checked my "main.xml" and the text associated to the buttons are referneced correctly. I added trim to make sure of that. However, all that is ever returned in the toast is "none." What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help.

Can anyone give me a brief idea on developing a simple crossword puzzle game with android? I need some guideline in things like:
1. Drawing out the boxes
2. How do I draw a boxes with number label on their top right/left corner
3. How to catch a button click action whenever the user click any box on the screen, then I will pop up an input box and ask for input.

when I click on one item in the ListView that item's background changes to light gray, but when I continue to scroll through the list every 4th item has the background changed to light gray even though those other items have not been clicked. How do I make only the item I clicked be effected by the click?
ListView lv = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.resultsList);
lv.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter(this, R.layout.resultitem, (String[])labelList.toArray(new String[labelList.size()])));
lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView parent, View view, int position, long id) {
TextView tv = (TextView)view.findViewById(R.id.result);
tv.setBackgroundColor(Color.LTGRAY);
tv.setTextColor(Color.BLACK);

I want to receive Intent "android.intent.action.SEND" in a Service. Is it possilbe to register for this Intent via registerReceiver() and get the Intent in Broadcast receiver in the Service?
Or is there any restrictions that "android.intent.action.SEND" can only be registered via Manifest.xml of an Activity and not in a Service?

I have a graphic (test.png) of which I need to include density- specific versions, so I put a large (150 X 150) version in res/ drawable-hdpi, and a smaller (100 x 100) version in res/drawable-mdpi. I then include an ImageView, and set the src attribute to @drawable/ test. In the Eclipse Layout editor I can change the configuration between mdpi and hdpi configurations and the correct version of test.png is displayed. Unfortunately, when I compile and load onto a device, the mdpi version is always chosen. The only time the hdpi version is chosen is if it is the only option. I have tested this on the Droid and EVO 4G, which are both running Android 2.1 Update 1, and also the emulator with the same results. For what it's worth, I have also tested on a Motorola CLIQ (running Android 1.5) and an Ion (currently running CM 5.0.7) and they get the mdpi version (as expected, since they are both mdpi devices).

I have just started my career as an android programmer, and am currently relying heavily on the sample code and api examples. I have been working with this api example, to produce an expandable list of items (note this example does not use the ExpadableListView).In playing with the example, I tried to add another widget that would become visible and be gone at the same time as the text (mDialogue in the sample code). This works well with another TextView, but as soon as I tried to add a button widget, it stopped working. The list would expand on first click, showing my hidden TextView and Button, but it will not disappear on further clicks. The button is however, clickable, and I was able to set up an onClick listener to change the button text back and forth.I'm starting to wonder, is it just not possible to have a clickable item inside a clickable list item? Or is there some kind of work around? Would it solve my problem if I used ExpandableListView?

I am wanting to allow the user of my android application the ability to set some parameters. The radio button is ideal for this situation. However, I don't like the radio buttons are rendered. Is it possible to change the radio button icon? For example, is it possible to create a custom layout for each row and in that layout reference my own icon and change the font et al.

When I DL'd the GDE app, I accidentally set my stock droid "HOME" screen as the default screen when the popup box came up asking me to choose between stock Home and GDE. Now when I click on GDE and click the home button, it switches back to the stock Home screen. How to I switch the settings now to set the GDE app as the new home screen?

As the title says, i have a Spinner with just a couple of options and a button. I didnt declared any Listener for the spinner, instead of that, what i want is use the button and perform different actions depending on the spinner selected option.
So, i declared a handler in the button option "android:onClick", but once there, i dont know how to access the option selected in the Spinner.

I'm a proud owner of a HTC-Hero and I really loves it. Best phone ever.I have managed to find pretty all applications I need but there is one I really missing.When arrive home I am always redirect all incomg calls to my landline and do so by All call forwarding.It happens quite often that I forgets to inactivate this feature when leaving for work and all calls will then be redirected to my home and ofcourse none will answer.I'm looking for an application that identifies my WLAN and then automaticly redirects all calls to my landline and then when signal is lost, remove the redirect. It would also work for me if the application use the radio tower as a reference or via GPS-tracker.

I like being able to wake the phone to view the lock screen using the home button at the bottom of the phone, but is there any way to make it so that a second click of that button, or a click of one of the others down there, will make it sleep again? Having to press the power button up top is just an inconvenience.

I love my Droid X. I downloaded PdaNet and paid for it. I received the receipt and clicked on the Pdanet tray icon and hit the register button. I wasn't smart enough to use copy and paste for the serial number and I typed it in instead. Tried three times (my typing isn't that bad) and all tries failed and the register button disappeared from the icon. I have tried to obtain help from PdaNet but no luck so far. The app is worthless to me if I can't access secure sites so I am ready to go in a different direction unless one of you can give me a suggestion for registering PdaNet.

I looked around and although there are many related questions I didn't see one that answers my exact question:
I would like to create an app that runs in the background that provides the exact same functionality as the hard coded 'Back' button in all cases.
The reason? I (for example) have a Droid X, and it is BIG. it makes it extremely hard to use one-handed and having a swipe gesture function as a back button (like in Palm Pre for example) would greatly increase the ease of use.
as far as I'm concerned the app could just be one simple class that contains:
1) a listener for the 'back' swipe
2) a call to the physical hard button itself
Is this possible? are there built in APIs for the hard coded buttons that would allow me to call them without actually pressing them?
Again - I'm not interested in overriding the button, I'm interested in making a software call to it - or failing that, in emulating it's behavior in any and all states and other apps!
Please forgive the naivete of this post. I am a very novice programmer and really I just want to know whether this is possible before I start to devote myself to trying to build it.

I'm trying to use Spinner as a button with selection pop-up. Basically I want an icon and when user clicks it - the popup list is displayed and user can make a selection. The Spinner happily accepts icon image as drawable background. Unfortunately when I select a value the text overlays the background. Is it possible to set selection text color as a transparent? Or maybe there's a better way?

I'm starting with Scala + Android (and using the sbt android plugin). I'm trying to wire a button action to a button without the activity implementing View.OnClickListener.
The button click fails at runtime because the method cannot be found. The document I'm working through says that I need only declare a public void method taking a View on the action, and use that method name in the layout.
What have I done wrong? MainActivity.scala package net.badgerhunt.hwa
import android.app.Activity
import android.os.Bundle
import android.widget.Button
import android.view.View
import java.util.Date. Code...

This is a question about the new Swype beta. Everything about the newest versions of Swype Beta are amazing. Being able to change themes, and some function changes, etc... EXCEPT for the back/delete button action. This is the only thing that sucks. Where as you used to be able to HOLD the delete button and delete whole words, you can only delete one letter at a time unless you highlight the word using the swype key which can become aggravating.
My question. How hard would it be to go in and change the action of the delete button? Would it be a simple smali edit or even a simple xml edit.

How to remap the volume up hardware button to a tasker task widget?

CODE:............
I have this at the top of my application. When the application starts, the EditText is orange highlighted and has a cursor in it; when the EditText is tapped, the soft keyboard pops up. The user uses it to type into the EditText.
However, when they click the Button, my onClick method fires and does everything it's supposed to, however the soft keyboard stays on screen and the EditText is still highlighted with its cursor.
I also have, at the top of the Button onclick: findViewById(R.id.name).clearFocus();
In spite of this, the EditText does not seem to clear its focus. How do I make the button actually act as if it is submitting the form?
Also, I do not transition to a different Activity on the click of the Button. I suppose that is the typical case, and probably the reason why they don't bother hiding the keyboard. However I want to keep the search box and button at the top of the screen, so I just dynamically fill and add views to the screen when the Button is pressed. How can I achieve my desired behavior?

I want, that when the user clicks on a button, a textfield with a number will increase or decrease. But this should be work in a way, that the user leaves the finger on the button and the number increases automatically. Therefore he doesn´t have to click lot of times.I have not found any method to override that could implement such behaviour! Does anybody know how to implement this?

I am trying to follow a tutorial to learn how to get to a new screen on a button click. The issue I feel I am facing is that in this tutorial they have a file named main.java, firstly I don't have such a file. I think I named the file as name1.java and on this screen i have everything going on including this button I am trying to make. So I m really confused as in this article below they have the main.java file and from that file they are moving to screen 1 and screen 2. Is it so important to have a main.java from where we branch the two activities?
