All of the android examples for XmlPullParser pull from a local resource file, and all of the SAX examples pull the XML from a URL. I've been told SAX is faster, so I'm trying to use that to pull data from a local resource file (res/xml/thefile.xml)
The example code I'm working off of is here. So in that example, the code I want to change is:
URL url = new URL("http://example.com/example.xml");
...
xr.parse(new InputSource(url.openStream()));
Instead of using URL, I want to use getXml(R.xml.thefile)
Is that possible, or does SAX need to get data from a URL?

I want to create a progress Bar for an FTP download. The server where I am downloading the file has all of its directories and files hidden. I want to display the progress of the download. Is there any way I can get the file size? Here is my current code:
FTP client = new FTP Client();
FTP client.setListHiddenFiles
FTP client.connect(host Part);
FTP client.login(user Name, password);
FTPclient.setFileType(FTP.BINARY_FILE_TYPE);
Input Stream instream = FTP client.retrieveFileStream(pathExcludingHostIncludingFirstSlash);
int l;
byte[] tmp = new byte[2048];
int update Counter = 0;
int bytes Downloaded = 0;
while ((l = instream.read(tmp)) != -1) {
Foss.write(tmp, 0, l);
bytes Downloaded+=2048;
update Counter++;
if(update Counter==3){
kilobytes Downloaded=(bytes Downloaded / 1024);
publish Progress((String[])null);
update Counter=0}

I am trying to read a file "words.txt" from a resource. It is a very simple, but large (2 MB), text file that I want to read line by line. I have put the file into /res/raw/words.txt, and try to open it with the following code:
CODE:...................
However, I get a java.io.IOException. This is not a "resource not found" exception, so the resource is opened correctly, but the readLine() produces the error.
I tried using the InputStream itself, with the result that read() produces -1, which stands for EOF, as if the file was empty.

How can you read GZIP file in Android located in the "ASSETS" (or resources/raw) folder?
I have tried the following code, but my stream size is always 1.
GZIPInputStream fIn = new GZIPInputStream(mContext.getResources().openRawResource(R.raw.myfilegz));
int size = fIn.available();
For some reason the size is always 1. But if Idon't GZIP the file, it works fine.
Using Android 1.5

I guess many people already read this article:
Using your own SQLite database in Android applications: http://www.reigndesign.com/blog/using-your-own-sqlite-database-in-android-applications/comment-page-2/#comment-12368
However it's keep bringing IOException at
CODE:.............
I'am trying to use a large DB file. It's as big as >8MB. I built it using sqlite3 in Mac OS X, inserted UTF-8 encoded strings (for I am using Korean), added android_meta table with ko_KR as locale, as instructed above.
However, When I debug, it keeps showing IOException at
CODE:..............
I suspect it's caused by trying to read a big file. If not, I have no clue why.
I tested the same code using much smaller text file, and it worked fine.
Can anyone help me out on this? I've searched many places, but no place gave me the clear answer, or good solution. Good meaning efficient or easy.
I will try use BufferedInput(Output)Stream, but if the simpler one cannot work, I don't think this will work either.
Can anyone explain the fundamental limits in file input/output in Android, and the right way around it, possibly?
WITH MORE DETAIL:

I have an XML resource file:
<resources> <section>
<category value="1" resourceId="@xml/categoryData1" />
<category value="2" resourceId="@xml/categoryData2" />
<category value="3" resourceId="@xml/categoryData3" />
</section> </resources>
Using XmlPullParser, on the START_TAG, I can use:
int value = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "value", 0);
to get values 1, 2, 3...however:
int resourceId = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "resourceId", 0);
doesn't work...it just yields the default value 0, or whatever I change the default value (3rd parameter) to be. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or if this is possible?

I need to get the context to be able to get a resource. Like this:
getApplicationContext().getResources().openRawResource( R.raw.texture );
I've seen the getApplicationContext() in the android documentation but when I try to use it in the above code it doesn't work - it doesn't exist.
I can send the context through functions to get it to where it's needed and it works. However, I find it cumbersome to send a variable through many functions that doesn't need or use it. Then I would rather just try to get it in the function that do. But the getApplicationContext(), as in the android documentation, doesn't work - http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Context.html
So how do I get the context so I can read resources? Or are my only option to send it through all my functions?

I am getting the input of a web page using Input Stream in = httpConnection.getInputStream(); I then use the XmlPullParser to check if an error has occurred. If no error has occurred, I then want to reset the Input Stream back to the beginning so that I can parse it through another function I have created. I tried in.reset(); but this does not work. Is this possible?

I'm running into a strange problem while reading from an Input Stream on the Android platform. I'm not sure if this is an Android specific issue, or something I'm doing wrong in general. The only thing that is Android specific is this call:
Input Stream is = getResources().openRawResource(R.raw.myfile);
This returns an Input Stream for a file from the Android assets. Anyways, here's where I run into the issue:
bytes[] buffer = new bytes[2];
is.read(buffer);
When the read() executes it throws an IOException. The weird thing is that if I do two sequential single byte reads (or any number of single byte reads), there is no exception. Ie, this works:
byte buffer;
buffer = (byte)buffer.read();
buffer = (byte)buffer.read();
Any idea why two sequential single byte reads work but one call to read both at once throws an exception? The Input Stream seems fine... is.available() returns over a million bytes (as it should).
Stack trace shows these lines just before the Input Stream.read():
java.io.IOException
at android.content.res.AssetManager.readAsset(Native Method)
at android.content.res.AssetManager.access$800(AssetManager.java:36)
at android.content.res.AssetManager$AssetInputStream.read(AssetManager.java:542)
Changing the buffer size to a single byte still throws the error. It looks like the exception is only raised when reading into a byte array.
If I truncate the file to 100,000 bytes (file is: 1,917,408 bytes originally) it works fine. Is there a problem with files over a certain size?

I found a problem with GZIP input stream when wrapping InputStream from HttpURLConnection. When the server response with Transfer- Encoding=chunked, Content-Encoding=gzip and Connection=Keep-Alive. The second post always return -1. After digging into the source code, I found the place that could be a bug: InflaterInputStream.java (line 190 to 192) if (inf.needsInput()) { fill(); } Because InflaterInputStream doesn't need more input, it doesn't try to read the end of chunked encoding (0x)(30 0a 0d) that cause the second post to return with -1 every time.

In my case I need to be able apply a color conditionally (for example based if an item is read or unread) so I need to be able to read the "read" and "unread" colors from the current theme and apply them appropriately.
I gave the color special attribute name in my attr xml file and assigned it different values in 2 different themes. if I do getResources().getColorStateList( <my attribute resource ID>) it fails because it can't find the resource. It seems like something needs to first resolve the attribute Id to the Id of the resource in the current theme, but I am not sure what does that.
