Android :: Read Resource Based On The Current Theme?

Nov 22, 2009

In my case I need to be able apply a color conditionally (for example based if an item is read or unread) so I need to be able to read the "read" and "unread" colors from the current theme and apply them appropriately.

I gave the color special attribute name in my attr xml file and assigned it different values in 2 different themes. if I do getResources().getColorStateList( <my attribute resource ID>) it fails because it can't find the resource. It seems like something needs to first resolve the attribute Id to the Id of the resource in the current theme, but I am not sure what does that.

Android :: Desnity-Based Resource Selection?

May 27, 2010

I have a graphic (test.png) of which I need to include density- specific versions, so I put a large (150 X 150) version in res/ drawable-hdpi, and a smaller (100 x 100) version in res/drawable-mdpi. I then include an ImageView, and set the src attribute to @drawable/ test. In the Eclipse Layout editor I can change the configuration between mdpi and hdpi configurations and the correct version of test.png is displayed. Unfortunately, when I compile and load onto a device, the mdpi version is always chosen. The only time the hdpi version is chosen is if it is the only option. I have tested this on the Droid and EVO 4G, which are both running Android 2.1 Update 1, and also the emulator with the same results. For what it's worth, I have also tested on a Motorola CLIQ (running Android 1.5) and an Ion (currently running CM 5.0.7) and they get the mdpi version (as expected, since they are both mdpi devices).

Android : Get Context To Be Able To Get Resource So Read?

Nov 3, 2010

I need to get the context to be able to get a resource. Like this:

getApplicationContext().getResources().openRawResource( R.raw.texture );

I've seen the getApplicationContext() in the android documentation but when I try to use it in the above code it doesn't work - it doesn't exist.

I can send the context through functions to get it to where it's needed and it works. However, I find it cumbersome to send a variable through many functions that doesn't need or use it. Then I would rather just try to get it in the function that do. But the getApplicationContext(), as in the android documentation, doesn't work - http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Context.html

So how do I get the context so I can read resources? Or are my only option to send it through all my functions?

Android :: Read Text File As Resource

Sep 14, 2010

I am trying to read a file "words.txt" from a resource. It is a very simple, but large (2 MB), text file that I want to read line by line. I have put the file into /res/raw/words.txt, and try to open it with the following code:

CODE:...................

However, I get a java.io.IOException. This is not a "resource not found" exception, so the resource is opened correctly, but the readLine() produces the error.

I tried using the InputStream itself, with the result that read() produces -1, which stands for EOF, as if the file was empty.

Android :: Read Text Raw Resource File?

Android :: GPS Coordinates Within Certain Radius Based On Current Location

Sep 3, 2009

In my application I have a list of +400 GPS coordinates which I retrieve from addresses. The application should give me the top X nearest coordinates based on my current location.

This application is possible (I think) with the distanceBetween function. But (I think) the application is really inefficient when i iterate through the list of 400 coordinates and check the distance within a certain time interval. Another option is (I think) the proximityAlert function? All coordinates are loaded in this function and when my current location comes in the radius of a coordinate an alert is given. But the downside of this solution (I think) is the high memory usage which implies a short battery life of the Android phone?

Android :: Tag References Current Theme In Xml Causes Force Close

Oct 27, 2010

I'm in the middle of implementing themes for my application right now, and everything's been going really smooth until as of late. I've been using the android:background="?thin_border" tag to provide a background for linearlayouts with items that I want visually grouped together. The problem I'm running into is when I try to use this tag in an xml with a custom class as one of the elements, and try to add this background tag.

I've got an xml file that looks generally like so:

CODE:.................

and the custom class has two constructors:

CODE:........

with some other functions that store values, manipulate the data, etc. The custom layout class is only ever called directly in the xml, and the xml is inflated like so:

CODE:...........

The problem I'm running into is that I'm getting these error messages:

CODE:.................

The error seems to be caused by the android:background="?thin_border" tag. If I remove it from the layout, it inflates fine, and the program continues on. As soon as I add it back in, I get these errors and the program stops.

Android :: How To Use Resource Within A Custom Xml Resource File?

Aug 3, 2010

I have an XML resource file:

<category value="1" resourceId="@xml/categoryData1" />
<category value="2" resourceId="@xml/categoryData2" />
<category value="3" resourceId="@xml/categoryData3" />
</section> </resources>
Using XmlPullParser, on the START_TAG, I can use:
int value = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "value", 0);
to get values 1, 2, 3...however:
int resourceId = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "resourceId", 0);
doesn't work...it just yields the default value 0, or whatever I change the default value (3rd parameter) to be. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or if this is possible?

Android :: Trying To Create Basic AlertDialog Using Activity With Theme Of Theme.Dialog

Sep 10, 2010

I'm trying to create a basic AlertDialog using an activity with a theme of Theme.Dialog.What I want is for there to be a horizontal bar between the title and the message. However, the bar is not being resized correctly. Rather than being the width of the activity, the bar is the width of the message text. This means that if the activity is being expanded by the message, then the bar will fill the whole activity, so it looks correct. However, if the message width is less than the activity width, the bar only displays above the part of the activity with the text. I've tried every single combination of "fill_parent" and "wrap_content" that I can think of, and none of those work.I've also tried using RelativeLayout and placing the bar above the message text, but that also doesn't work. If I use the RelativeLayout approach and set the bar to fill_parent, it causes the activity to expand to fill the whole screen width, which is also undesirable. Ideally, I want the text placed, the activity width computed, and the bar resized to that width (without affecting it). Is there some way to flag a view to fill the parent view but not to affect its size?

Android :: Best Practice For Overriding Both Theme And Theme.Dialog Correctly In An App?

Jul 15, 2009

I use themes in my apps, which generally just extend android:Theme and then set a bunch of styles. I use dialogs made from layouts, but since I set the theme for the application, they have inherited all of the regular styles and no longer carry a border, etc. My question is: How do I say, "I want everything to use this theme which extends Theme, except dialogs, which should use this other theme that extends Theme.Dialog"? It seems like that's how things work by default but when you set the theme to your own, you lose the dialog theme!

Android : Extending Theme Dialog - Unable To Theme In Project

Mar 6, 2009

I've extended Theme.Dialog to use a different color as per the sample in the ApiDemos project but for some reason it does not use the theme properly in my project. I created a new project and it works perfectly fine there. The main problem here is that it does not show as floating in my project. Instead, it sets the rest of the screen black except for what would be the dialog window, where it uses the correct colors, etc. Any ideas? I am beating my head against the wall here.

Android :: Get Resource ID From Value

Oct 11, 2010

I do have a lot of language specific resources. There's one point in my Android apps where I do get a resource value and need to translate this value into the matching id. The value is not neccessarily in the language specific file for the current language (en/de/...). It's somewhere in there ... and it's unique.

After reading the docs and this thread "http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3476430/get-resource-id-by-passing-name-as-a-parameter-in-android" I thought that "getIdentifier(String name, String defType, String defPackage)" is the correct way to go but I can't get it to work. The result is always "0".

This code is part of an activity and I'm on Android 2.2.

Is it possible that Android doesn't take all resource files into account and searches just in the current language specific one?

For an example

CODE:....

To make things clear. I don't want to mis-use string resources as a database. It's only one part that occurs on very rare situations.

Android :: Resource In Conflict

Sep 4, 2010

My application has resource conflict problem. Did some investigation, seems like all the resources within the apk file are cached after they are loaded on demand. The cache is stored in Resources.java mDrawableCache. The key to retrieve the drawable from this cache is combining the data and assertCookie fields of TypedValue class. In my application, there are 2 resources, ex. a color background and image drawable, evaluated to the SAME key value.. So just wondering, how can it happen?BTW, I am using eclair SDK.
