I need a database in which I can store data and get data whenever I need. Is this possible with android.preference package. I do not want to use sqlite database.

I have the following code in my application in res/xml/preferences.xml:

And I was wondering is it possible for me to then use this preference in code so I can update it via downloading an xml file? So I currently display the above preference in a PreferenceActivity, which works fine, however I want to be able to update the setting by downloading a new setting every week from the internet. So my question is how do I open this preference in code and set its value to the new downloaded value?
I don't exactly know how android updates the applications. As far as I've read around here it keeps the SQLite database. So, imagine this scenario: one application that uses SQLite database for persisting data. After a while I release v2 which contains some database changes and I need to update user data in database. How can I make this during the update process ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy .apk file is confirmed working, however for users of the Motorola Milestone (which runs the same android version 2.0 and up) they receive the error upon attempt to install. I've googled and searched through the other questions here. The error seems to normally only appear if you did something wrong in the signing wizard or renamed the file. Is it possible that some kind of software difference on the OS build on these Milestones is preventing the install?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've created an Android application which has a certain package name that I've been using personally for months now. I'm about to release it on the market, and I have to change the package name. This cannot be avoided.
My issue is that the application has an SQLite database attached to it that I want to keep, but I know if I change the package name, it'll install as a separate application and I'll have to restart my database, which would take a very long time.
Is there a good way to change a package name while maintaining the SQLite database? Or at least moving the database easily? This will just be for my own phone since it hasn't been released to the public yet.
I would like to use this package to back-up my app's database filles. I was looking at the source for the User Dictionary Provider when I noticed that it was using it. Why is it not exposed in the public API and what are the plans in the short term with it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a database where I store two different kinds of data. One table is for favorite routes, the other stores the retrieved routes from a server.
I can retrieve the routes etc just fine. But after retrieving the first Route, pressing back or HOME, and then retrieving another route, the routes table is filled with all the old routes plus the new ones.
So my question: how do I delete ONLY the routes table and not the whole database because I don't want to delete the added favorites?
I found the following function in the android docs:
public int delete (String table, String whereClause, String[] whereArgs) and I tried to implement it, but I must pass a SQLiteDataBase as an argument. But how?
I implemented: public void deleteTableRoutes(SQLiteDataBase db){ db.delete("routes", null, null);}
But I want to call this function from a different class where I have no reference to the database.. so what do I have to pass as an argument? Or how do I get a reference to my database?

i work on custom Application Manager and try to get the disk usage of installed package. So PackageManager.getpackageSizeInfo was removed from SDK on 0.9->1.0 update android.content.pm. PackageStats(String pkgName)(cacheSize, codeSize, dataSize) returns always "0" Size of phys. file (java.io.File) in "/data/app" seems wrong/not completely. Has anybody any solution to get the total disc space used by an installed package?

There is a big database(15M) in my application, it is too big to download the apk if I publish the source database in myapp.apk. So I encode the db to binary files(300k). But the new problem is I should decode binary files and create the database(with data), this procedure take about several minutes, so I can NOT do this in SQLiteOpenHelper.onCreate(), this is too slow for user experience(though it is a one time procedure, it is still unacceptable).
My application has NO main activity entry in launcher, the main entry is Broadcast Receiver.on Receive, the information should display to user immediately when receiving the broadcast, so I have no chance to display a several minutes "Initializing, please waiting..." UI. The best chance to create database and init data immediately after install, but how to do this, is there any broadcast? or is there any AndroidManifest attribute?

After querying , when i call cursor.move To First(), the UI gets blocked until the operation is completed.This is very disturbing experience for user , especially if there are 10000 plus records.I use Thread.sleep in between after each 1000 records, As soon as cursor.move To First is called, UI blocks for 2 3 seconds. Am i missing anything here ?
