If an android device wants to support multiple cameras, then how does the API support this? Right now the framework API is a simple static method to create an instance of camera Camera.open(). I see couple of options:
1. Using camera.setParameters() to set a name/value pair that instructs which camera to choose?
2. It would be nice and cleaner perhaps if this was done right on the open() method perhaps with additional enum.
Obviously option # 1 would not result in any addition to the API. Does this use sound right to you to support multiple cameras?

To support usability studies on what applications are used, i want to write a service that logs when an activity is started and also when it has finished. This is to understand how the users are using the device:
One straightforward option is to have the applications modify, to write this out. But this is tedious having to modify all applications and will not work esp with third party or built in applications.
Is there any alternatives that makes this simpler and easier?
BTW: Looking at the android framework source ActivityManagerNative seems to be invoking a Binder interface when an Activity is started and finished. Any information on what this service is? Is this something i can tap into?

Id like to create a small cross-mobile javascript application, which consists of a form and a grid as result. I also want to display some images, with something similar to lightbox. I coded an home maded prototype but id like to add 'touch' effects and support multiple screens easyly.I looked at JqTouch but its very slow on my HTC magic/android. Also found XuiJs but cant find any working example.Anyone found something light, nice, and iPhone+Android compatible ?

I am developing a few mobile apps for different platforms including Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Android and Symbian S60.I want my mobile apps to have the capability of checking for updates before starting and in case a new version is available, prompt the user to upgrade. Moreover in certain cases (like security patches), the user must be forced to update or the app won't work.Surely I can cook some code to achieve the task but I was wondering if there are already existing framework to serve the purpose so that I don't have to re-invent the wheel and test all over?

When I first ran across PhoneGap, I was excited because I envisioned simply dropping in the URL of a mobile site and simply updating the mobile site to use the devices capabilities when available.
Alas, it seems it is not that easy.
From what I understand (and I could be incorrect), any HTML/JS access to the device's hardware is limited to local 'pages'. So essentially create a HTML/JS local 'web' app to access the 'real' mobile web app by AJAX like calls. It seems a little redundant (at least to me) when the point is to simply extend the interface an existing mobile site.
Not trying to knock PhoneGap here, just wondering if there's a similar framework that allows a remote site to access the phone's hardware directly. Or if I've missed how that can be done with PhoneGap.
(Sure, I know "allows a remote site to access the phone's hardware directly" sounds scary - but the URL is hard-coded in the app, and HTTPS could provide authenticity. Of course, security is probably why this isn't supported by PhoneGap.)

I'm beginning the process of learning the ins and outs of developing sites for mobile web browsers. Are there any good resources/communities online that discuss mobile specific site development issues? My initial understanding is that to cover different phones you need to build one site that is enabled for browsers with the webkit engine (iphone, android, etc.) and another more basic site for other older browsers, is this assumption correct? Also what does developing for webkit mean exactly? How is it different than just using javascript/css/html? Is it the same except that you limit yourself to webkit specific functions and css? I looked on the webkit site, but it didn't explain it in those terms. Are there any other snafus I need to watch out for when developing for mobile browsers?

I'm a programmer looking to play in the mobile world. The application I'd like to play with would support my musical hobbies. I suspect a mobile phone with a music player could easily be programmed to support a classical musicians practice sessions. Access to media player APIs without the need to open external apps or do clunky things with files.Adequate access to playback API to create specific notes and beat patterns. As a hobby application, this should not require expensive tooling.I can switch to a new phone to use the application. Bonus points for something that easily ports to a netbook.I will admit I new to the world of sexy phones. I currently use an obsolete voice device with text messaging. I won't revealing my current flavor of programming because learning a new platform is just fine.

I didn't sync my contacts to gmail on my Instinct bc I've always just used Sprint's mobile sync. Contacts were automatically saved on the network, so when you bought a new phone or whatever, they could just send the contacts to your phone. Well, guess what! Epic doesn't support mobile sync. SO PLEASE BACK UP YOUR CONTACTS THROUGH GMAIL IF YOU WERE PLANNING ON RELYING ON MOBILE SYNC! Unfortunately, I don't have a "local" Sprint store. It will take more time to drive to one than to manually enter my contacts.

I have had androids for over two years now and am getting more and more concerned every time I download an app and seeing that it wants to READ my SMS message and Contacts.
Is there a way I can disable reading of SMS messages or any one of the other permissions by specific apps, or all apps?
Are we living in a world where any "joe schmo" can upload an app the to the app store and wait for those inadvertent downloads and collect all your personal information, and that's after all the time we spend protecting our identity and personal details?

How can I use these activities in my other 2 apps ? Whats the common approach for doing this? Adding the "Framework app" to the build path of the two other apps won't work.....
