Android :: Scrollable Tabs - Dolphin Browser When Using Multiple Tabs

Jun 19, 2010

I'm currently working on my first android application. I am using a tabbed layout for my application. I followed the tutorial for this on the dev guide and ran into a problem. The tutorial only used three tabs, but I have a need for more. As such, the tabs resize and bunch up. I was hoping someone could tell me how I can make them scroll, like in dolphin browser when using multiple tabs.

Android : Detect Screen Size Group (normal,large, Small)?

Dec 6, 2009

I am trying to detect if the screen size is normal, large or small. I am using

Configuration conf =view.getResources().getConfiguration();

(conf.screenLayout&Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_MASK) == Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_NORMAL

When testing with the emulator this works for screen sizes normal and small, but large (480x800 & 480x854) returns that it is normal...

I have found very little information on using the configuration to detect the group, has anyone got any experience with this?

Android :: TABS In 2.0 Vs 1.5 - Rounded Corners TABS

Feb 27, 2010

I simply use the tabwidget :

CODE:..........

Why are my tabs so uggly in 2.0 (no more rounded corners as in 1.5/1.6) ?

ugly tabs here

=>

This was better

What should I do now to show "rounded corners" TABS to Nexus One (for exemple) users ;-) ?

Is it because of the following manifest lines :

CODE:................

I have to keep android:anyDensity="true" otherwise I've got a problem with re-sizing of the menus described here

As a separate question, my users can change the Locale within my app itself, I then "redraw" the menus using onPrepareOptionsMenu (Menu menu) to refresh the strings within the menu with the new language choosen by the user. Is there an equivalent for TABS (I have local strings within the Title of the TABS) or do I have to delete all the tabs and re-create them from scratch ?

Android :: Tabs - MapView - Activities Within Tabs

Oct 19, 2009

We're in the process of writing an app that has 4 tabs: Map, People, Places, Events. The People, Places, and Events in the App show up as Icons on the map. By default the People, Places, and Events tabs each show a listview, custom rendered, displaying all the People, Places, and Events respectively.

Now, right now each of the tabs has as its content an Intent set to launch the corresponding activity. For instance, there is a MapTabActivity that extends MapActivity, a ShowPeopleListActivity that shows the people, and so on and so forth.

I see a lot of StackOverflow questions/answers saying that due to various limitations in the way the TabHost is setup, it's best NOT to use activities as the content of tabs. For instance, it's impossible to launch a new activity and have it take the place of the existing activity within a tab, whereas it's possible to switch out a View with a different view.

Now, I'm at a crossroads. We've (for better or worse) devoted a fair amount of time trying to get this app to work the way it's currently structured, with the Activities as the content of the tabs. When an icon corresponding to a Person, Place, or Event is clicked, it fires off a VIEW Intent on a URI corresponding to that object; this is picked up by an Activity that then shows the object. The same mechanism is at work both in the Map and in the individual lists. We really like the loose coupling this provides us; we just give a VIEW command and the URI to the person/place/event and it automatically brings us to the right activity. Granted, the activity that's launched covers up the tab view rather than appearing inside of that, but we were willing to live with this.

Here's an issue though: from the Show activity, we want to be able to go back to the map, centered at that person, place, or event. We can launch a new activity to show the map again, but now we have the map activity as the content of the tab, plus the show activity, plus the new map activity in the activity stack; given how resource intensive the map activity is, I'm guessing this is not the ideal way to go.

I guess my question is, is there a GOOD tutorial somewhere showing exactly how to do complex tasks with a TabHost? I've seen HelloTabWidget; I'm looking for something much more sophisticated than this. I'm worried that if we switch to the View based way of doing things, we'll have to do a LOT of housekeeping to intercept all the back events, try to switch out the views, etc., etc., as well as strongly coupling our program in a way we don't want.

Android :: Home Screen Widget Size In Normal Screen And Largest Screen

Mar 31, 2010

I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels.Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?

Android :: Normal Maps Vs Normal Coordinates

Jul 10, 2010

I'm currently working with OpenGL ES 1.1 and using the DrawElements convention along with Vertex, Normal, Texture Coordinate, and Index arrays.

I recently came across this while researching the idea of using Normal/Bump mapping which I previously though impossible with OpenGL ES: http://iphone-3d-programming.labs.oreilly.com/ch08.html

I can generate an object-apace normal map already from my 3D modeler, but what I'm not completely clear on is whether or not the Normal coordinates array will be necessary any longer if implementing a 2nd texture unit for normal mapping, or will Lighting + Color Texture Combined with a Normal map via the DOT3_RGB option be all that is required?

EDIT - After researching DOT3 Lighting a bit further, I'm not sure if the answer given by ognian is correct. This page, [url] gives an example of it's usage and if you look at the "Rendering & Final Result" section bit of code, there is no normal array ClientState for Normal Arrays is never enabled.

I also found this post here,[url] which explains it well... but leads me to another question. In the comments, it's stated that instead of translation of normals, you translate light direction. I'm confused about this as if I have a game with a stationary wall... why would I move the light around just for one model? Hoping someone can give a good explanation of all of this...

Android :: Creating Scrollable Layout

May 6, 2010

I'm trying to create a "scrollable" layout in Android. Even using developers.android.com, though, I feel a little bit lost at the moment. I'm somewhat new to Java, but not so much that I feel I should be having these issues--being new to Android is the bigger problem right now.The layout I'm trying to create should scroll in a sort of a "grid". I THINK what I'm looking for is the Gallery view, but I'm really lost as to how to implement it at the moment. I want it to "snap" to center the frame, like in the actual Gallery application.Essentially, if I had a photo gallery of 9 pictures, the idea is to scroll between them up/down AND side to side, in a 3x3 manner. Doesn't need to dynamically adjust, or anything like that, I just want a grid I can scroll through.I'm also not asking for anyone to give me explicit code for it--I'm trying to learn, more than anything. But pointing me in the right direction for helpful layout programming resources would be greatly appreciated, and confirming if it's a Gallery view I'm looking for would also be really helpful.EDIT: To clarify, the goal is to have ONE item on screen at a time. If you scroll between one item and the next, the previous one leaves the screen, and the new one snaps into place. So if it were a photo gallery, each spot on the grid would take up the entire screen size, approximately, and would be flung out of the viewable area when you slide across to the next photo, in either direction. (Photos are just an example for illustration purposes)

Android :: Scrollable ListView In TableView Row

Jul 3, 2010

I have the following layout for a dialog:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><TableLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/categorylist"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:stretchColumns="0">
<TableRow>
<ListView
android:id="@+id/categorylistview"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:isScrollContainer="true"
android:scrollbars="vertical"
android:scrollbarStyle="insideOverlay"
/> </TableRow>
<TableRow>
<TextView
android:text="New Category"
</TextView>
</TableRow>
<TableRow>
<EditText
android:id="@+id/NewCategoryEditText"
</EditText>
</TableRow>
<TableRow>
<Button
android:id="@+id/newcategorybutton"
</TableRow>
</TableLayout> I would like the Listview to grow until the available space is used, then scroll as it coninues to grow. This works fine when the table row with the Listview is the last one in the TableLayout: However, having the Add button at the top of the list is not very intuitive. When I move the "fixed" table rows to the bottom, the ListView will push them off the screen once it grows to a point where it should scroll. The ListView will only then begin to scroll when there is nothing else left that can be pushed off the screen:How can I change my layout so that the table rows with the button and the EditText view remain visible?
