Android :: How To Store Variable Values To Registry
Apr 2, 2009
I am creating an application which requires login and enables user to configure some settings.
However I would like to enable user to store preferred settings, username and password.
Does anyone know how to store and retrieve values from registry? Another possibility is using SQL Lite database but if possible I would prefer to store values to registry.

I seriously need help with a quite strange problem. I created a client which communicates with a server. Therefore, I have three classes. An activity providing a nice dialog to configure some data, a background service which checks the connection status periodically and a server class which handles the socket connection. Originally, the background service owned a server connection object but because I could not manage to provide data from the activity to the service, I decided to create the server connection class as singleton. The user is now able to change data in the activity (IP, Port, Username, Password) which shall be transmitted to the server object, if the save button is pressed. The data is read correctly, the activity calls the setter of the server class and the logcat also says that this data is correctly applied to the variable that stores the data in the server class. However, if I try to start the socket connection still the old values are stored in my variables although they've been overwritten before. What I am doing wrong, or how can I fix this?

That's a lot of code... no time to read it over now.. but off the top of my head: look into either using a database, an Application class (that will run the whole time your app is alive), or adding extras to the Intent bundle before starting your subactivity. These are all methods to pass data around between activities.

Is it possible to store strings values in multiple files? Eg, strings.xml, strings1.xml, strings2.xml etc.
I do not mean localized versions of the same file - those multiple files should contain different string ids in the same language, so in code they would be refered like: R.strings1.my_string_1 R.strings1.my_string_2 R.strings2.my_string_3 etc. So, "strings1", "strings2", "strings3" would be a kind of namespace for them.
Or, another way is to have multiple R classes inside one project, which would deal with different stringsXXX.xml files.
Like, currently we can refer to "my.name.space.R" and to "android.R" at the same time, so is it possible to have: android.R my.name.space1.R my.name.space2.R etc
At the same time inside single project?

Currently, I'm using the following code across all of my activities in my app to store application level variables and carry values between activities..
prefs = this.getSharedPreferences("MyPrefs", Context.MODE_PRIVATE);
I didn't have a PreferenceActivity prior to this, but now I do and I am looking to store a few user prefs from this new PreferenceActivity in the same sharedPreferences tag, "MyPrefs".
I know I can access the PreferenceActivity SharedPrefs from my activities via
prefs = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this);
but I would like those values saved to my current sharedPreferences tag, "MyPrefs", but I'm not sure how to do this.

I'm kinda noob to android so please bear with me. I'm currently developing app which uses tabs. My question now is: how to store values of variables so I can access them on the other tabs? I want to create something similar to sessions in PHP where I can save variables on one page and access on the other.

Is copying the reference to the object and not the value of the object. Meaning, when I modify pos.top or pos.bottom, the original object gets modified. I'm guessing I am missing a concept of pass object by reference vs value here which I thought I understood. What is the fix here? Is it a problem with how I defined my custom class?

I have an Android library project that makes calls to PreferencesManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences.
I have 2 version of my app, paid/free, and they are not able to access the preferences stored by the library code.
Can someone tell me the right way to store values in SharedPreferences in library code and have the values available to projects that include the library?

I want to create a global variable store for a list of user defined objects. I have a LinkedList of Feed (a user defined object) that I need to be made available to a new Activity that is created. This list is displayed using a ListView and so when an item of the ListView is clicked, I need the correct Feed index to be 'passed' to the new Activity. I have no problem doing this as I create an Intent and then pass the id of the selected row. I need the new Activity to have access to the LinkedList of Feed objects.
There are different ways to do this (explained here - http://code.google.com/android/kb/framework.html). I want to use the option (quoted from link above): The android.app.Application class The android.app.Application is a base class for those who need to maintain global application state. It can be accessed via getApplication() from any Activity or Service. It has a couple of life- cycle methods and will be instantiated by Android automatically if your register it in AndroidManifest.xml.
I want to use the above method as I could then fill the LinkedList at application start and then use it throughout without any duplicates etc. Does anyone know how the android.app.Application class can be used as a global variable store that can be accessed from other classes? I cannot find any more information on this method of passing information between Activities within a single application. Any information regarding passing user defined objects would be useful and specifically how to get the above idea to work.

I have a X10 Mini Android Terminal. The phone is very useful and delightful but i can't find how to delete some calls from the registry (answered, missed and dialed). The Phone just gives me the option to delete all the registry.
Can I delete some calls without erasing all of them?
If it's not possible with the phone itself, Is there another way to do it? Maybe dowloading an app from the Android Market?

Blocked Thread i am planning to keep as GUI thread and it should update the messages which are sent by b/g thread on the screen during its block state and will be unblocked by b/g thread in the end by calling open(); method.

I have this code:
hubSpinner.setOnItemSelectedListener(new OnItemSelectedListener() {
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parentView,
View selectedItemView, int position, long id) {
final MediaPlayer mp2 = MediaPlayer.create(Textbox.this, R.raw.hero);
mp2.start(); } public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> parentView) {
} } );
(The code basically runs when a new item is selected of a spinner and then plays a song, which later will be a variable based on what was picked, but I'm fine as it is for now). And I want to be able to use 'mp2' out of this public void, (I want a button which pauses it). How can I do this?

Anyone know of an audio player that will speed up the playback? It would be nice if it could keep the pitch the same but sped up is the goal. I used TCPMP on the Treo. This is great for listening to podcasts in a fraction of the time. Depending on the original audio, I can generally make everything out up to +25%.

I'd like to make a preference screen with a variable number of preferences, very much like the WiFi selector. A number of profiles should be clickable and possible to edit and in the bottom there should be an add profile button. Has anyone got any tips on how to accomplish this? All I've found is this: http://groups.google.com /group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa.
