Android : Store Values Of Variables To Access On Other Tabs?
Jun 9, 2010
I'm kinda noob to android so please bear with me. I'm currently developing app which uses tabs. My question now is: how to store values of variables so I can access them on the other tabs? I want to create something similar to sessions in PHP where I can save variables on one page and access on the other.

I have been facing problems to manage statics variables used in my android application. If we exit the application against a particular event (touch or key event -which is must for my app), all the statics variables are retaining the values when I am launching it again. I am invoking Activity.finish() method for termination . I know there is a collection type class available called Bundle and we can use it to save the states of all the statics and get those back when again creating the same activity during relaunch, but it would be a hard task if we want to port some j2me applications to Android because of having thousands of statics variables. Is there any way to kill the application completely including all the statics variable used there?
I tried with System.exit(0) and it works well for Android G1 and G2 (tested in firmware 1.6). But in Android Robyn (prototype) the same causes a major defect ("Activity not responding" popup apears just after exit) and I came to know from android dev forum that calling System.exit(0) is not recommended for termination of an activity.

I need to get my application working in background mode, then i supose that i have to put all the send/get remote data in a service..... but.... How can this service change values of variables and UI textfields of my activities? i can't find any information about this, all the tutorials i am finding are of simple services that doesn't do something like that.

When I extend a View, I cannot access the protected member variables from my code. Eclipse just says that there exists no variable with that name (for instance mScrollX). Why is that?

That's a lot of code... no time to read it over now.. but off the top of my head: look into either using a database, an Application class (that will run the whole time your app is alive), or adding extras to the Intent bundle before starting your subactivity. These are all methods to pass data around between activities.

I am creating an application which requires login and enables user to configure some settings.
However I would like to enable user to store preferred settings, username and password.
Does anyone know how to store and retrieve values from registry? Another possibility is using SQL Lite database but if possible I would prefer to store values to registry.

Is it possible to store strings values in multiple files? Eg, strings.xml, strings1.xml, strings2.xml etc.
I do not mean localized versions of the same file - those multiple files should contain different string ids in the same language, so in code they would be refered like: R.strings1.my_string_1 R.strings1.my_string_2 R.strings2.my_string_3 etc. So, "strings1", "strings2", "strings3" would be a kind of namespace for them.
Or, another way is to have multiple R classes inside one project, which would deal with different stringsXXX.xml files.
Like, currently we can refer to "my.name.space.R" and to "android.R" at the same time, so is it possible to have: android.R my.name.space1.R my.name.space2.R etc
At the same time inside single project?

Currently, I'm using the following code across all of my activities in my app to store application level variables and carry values between activities..
prefs = this.getSharedPreferences("MyPrefs", Context.MODE_PRIVATE);
I didn't have a PreferenceActivity prior to this, but now I do and I am looking to store a few user prefs from this new PreferenceActivity in the same sharedPreferences tag, "MyPrefs".
I know I can access the PreferenceActivity SharedPrefs from my activities via
prefs = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this);
but I would like those values saved to my current sharedPreferences tag, "MyPrefs", but I'm not sure how to do this.

I have four tabs (reports, review reports, map and settings). I have an sqlite database populated with report information. I wish to have the database accessible throughout the application. The reports tab successfully adds data to the database however using the same methodology crashes the application. The Android debugger points to the line where the database is called again.
In the reports tab the following code is used to launch the database...
CODE:.................
In the onCreate() method of the Review Tab - Where I wish to review reports - I try to access to the database through the call calling the return report method
this.reportDatabase = new ReportDatabase(this);
However this fails to work. In the android debugger highlights that the problem belongs with the context being provided to it. I realise that the report database has already been accessed by the report tab and wonder if this is causing the issue. I am new to programming android, the application is designed to report on flamingos in Africa, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Following the suggestion of Seva Alekseyev I have adapted as follows...
I have adapted my ReportDatabase as...
CODE:..............
using...
reportDatabase = ReportDatabase.open(this);
As the call in both the report and review tab. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work, the debugger stops on the same method. The full ReportDatabase.java file is here...
CODE:...........
This method returns a double array and probably shouldn't be this hacky...
CODE:............
With the error stack being...
CODE:.................

I have an Android library project that makes calls to PreferencesManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences.
I have 2 version of my app, paid/free, and they are not able to access the preferences stored by the library code.
Can someone tell me the right way to store values in SharedPreferences in library code and have the values available to projects that include the library?

I'm currently working on my first android application. I am using a tabbed layout for my application. I followed the tutorial for this on the dev guide and ran into a problem. The tutorial only used three tabs, but I have a need for more. As such, the tabs resize and bunch up. I was hoping someone could tell me how I can make them scroll, like in dolphin browser when using multiple tabs.

I simply use the tabwidget :
CODE:..........
Why are my tabs so uggly in 2.0 (no more rounded corners as in 1.5/1.6) ?
ugly tabs here

This was better
What should I do now to show "rounded corners" TABS to Nexus One (for exemple) users ;-) ?
Is it because of the following manifest lines :
CODE:................
I have to keep android:anyDensity="true" otherwise I've got a problem with re-sizing of the menus described here
As a separate question, my users can change the Locale within my app itself, I then "redraw" the menus using onPrepareOptionsMenu (Menu menu) to refresh the strings within the menu with the new language choosen by the user. Is there an equivalent for TABS (I have local strings within the Title of the TABS) or do I have to delete all the tabs and re-create them from scratch ?

We're in the process of writing an app that has 4 tabs: Map, People, Places, Events. The People, Places, and Events in the App show up as Icons on the map. By default the People, Places, and Events tabs each show a listview, custom rendered, displaying all the People, Places, and Events respectively.
Now, right now each of the tabs has as its content an Intent set to launch the corresponding activity. For instance, there is a MapTabActivity that extends MapActivity, a ShowPeopleListActivity that shows the people, and so on and so forth.
I see a lot of StackOverflow questions/answers saying that due to various limitations in the way the TabHost is setup, it's best NOT to use activities as the content of tabs. For instance, it's impossible to launch a new activity and have it take the place of the existing activity within a tab, whereas it's possible to switch out a View with a different view.
Now, I'm at a crossroads. We've (for better or worse) devoted a fair amount of time trying to get this app to work the way it's currently structured, with the Activities as the content of the tabs. When an icon corresponding to a Person, Place, or Event is clicked, it fires off a VIEW Intent on a URI corresponding to that object; this is picked up by an Activity that then shows the object. The same mechanism is at work both in the Map and in the individual lists. We really like the loose coupling this provides us; we just give a VIEW command and the URI to the person/place/event and it automatically brings us to the right activity. Granted, the activity that's launched covers up the tab view rather than appearing inside of that, but we were willing to live with this.
Here's an issue though: from the Show activity, we want to be able to go back to the map, centered at that person, place, or event. We can launch a new activity to show the map again, but now we have the map activity as the content of the tab, plus the show activity, plus the new map activity in the activity stack; given how resource intensive the map activity is, I'm guessing this is not the ideal way to go.
I guess my question is, is there a GOOD tutorial somewhere showing exactly how to do complex tasks with a TabHost? I've seen HelloTabWidget; I'm looking for something much more sophisticated than this. I'm worried that if we switch to the View based way of doing things, we'll have to do a LOT of housekeeping to intercept all the back events, try to switch out the views, etc., etc., as well as strongly coupling our program in a way we don't want.

While I realize resources themselves are defined in XML files, if I have an XML file of my own type that I wish to use, should I be storing them in "res/xml"?
Is there a better way to do this such as using assets and then loading them as binary to be parsed by another XML library?

While installiing "google play services" I got some error 919 "Incompatible with other applications(s) using the same shared user ID", for which i googled for solutions which said to uninstall Google service framework(GSF) then, install play services and then again install GSF.
when i tried to uninstall the GSF via "titanium backup" i was unable to do so. Hence i thought of converting it to an user app ,then take a backup of apk file and then uninstall it. While doing so, it was taking very much time, so i rebooted my phone, after which i did not found GSF in my apps list.
Now i'm not able to have an access to play store.
My GSF version was 4.0.1- 212031

My mom bought a $200 tablet from some no name company named linsay. It's model is a Cosmos F-10HD. It's an all right little tablet but it comes without the play store. When I try simply installing the play store apk it works for a while until i try to actually get an app but then it crashes and i can no longer open the store. I think this may be due to read write permissions but I don't think I can modify those without root access. So is there some way to get the play store working properly on this tablet without root access? And if not is there some way I can root this device and then install it?

I think lots of people here hold back a little bit on how much data they expose to google. I have a specific question. When apps access address book, what address book are they accessing? The phone address book? What if it's a tablet, which has no address book, is it access your google contacts?
Quote:
YOUR ACCOUNTS
FIND ACCOUNTS ON THE DEVICE
Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the tablet. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed. Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the phone. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed.
I have an account used specifically for playstore and my tablet and phone. I also access my personal gmail through my tablet or phone, using a different account. Does that mean that Angry Birds knows about both the account used by playstore AND my personal gmail account?
