Android :: How To Setup / Implement Two Working Piece Of Software / Can Work Together Different Apps
Mar 21, 2010
I have tried to figure out a way of exposing(sharing) data between a master application and slave application in a secure way (not world readable), but couldn't find clues on how to do that practically. Of course, reading articles outline that ContentProviders are for sharing persistent data, but I can't find a working example, nor the information how to setup/implement two working piece of software that can work together as different apps. The data I share is simple - ID & Data.If there's anyone that already achieved this already,

All of a sudden, I can't hear anyone when on a call using the ear piece. Speaker phone works fine, but when I toggle back - nothing. The other party can hear me just fine. I've tried rebooting, removing the battery and even plugging in and unplugging a pair of headphones (that I never use with the phone, anyway), but to no avail. It's dead to my ear - no "open air" sound - as if it's not even on.

I'm pretty new to Android and Java, though I've really been excited about what I've learned so far. I'm a little uncertain though on how to implement the Model layer.I come from a background in PHP web applications with Zend Framework and the like. I'm used to having an ORM component, through which the Model maps to a database. I haven't really seen anything like this yet for Android, although it's possible I've just not looked hard enough. Are there any good tutorials, articles, 3rd party libraries, etc. that specifically address setting up your Model layer for Android apps?

I just wrote my first live wallpaper and am getting ready to publish it, but I've hit a snag on something seemingly simple. I can't get the description to work. I've tried: 1) Putting raw text and string ids as android:description in the metadata for the service in the manifest 2) Putting raw text and string ids as android:description in the service's resource xml file none of those work. I checked the 2 live cube wallpaper examples and neither of those set a description. How is the description (the text under the name of the app on the live wallpaper chooser screen) set for all of those defaults that ship on the nexus?

What's the best way to implement an Android Market-like tabbar (Apps/Games/Downloads)?
It would be great if I could use TabHost, but I believe it doesn't allow this level of customization.

where I work, my signal is pretty bad. So I typically turn off Bluetooth, GPS, etc to extend my battery any little I can. So I'd like to get an app that sets up profiles for work so that between 7am-3pm, those settings turn off an than turn back on after 3. I think CM has a feature like this built in but I'm on my sgs3, TW. SCH-I535

I'm trying to determine whether or not my phone is defective, or if this is a current problem with the Cliq.
Of the apps I've downloaded, only a few of them have worked. Of those few that work, some don't work right. Has anyone had problems with these apps crashing on them, or just not working correctly?
- Nice Battery (see description at bottom of: My Ultimate CLIQ settings (so far))
- WeatherBug (kept showing the wrong location, crashed when trying to change location)
- Snake - doesn't work just says its "paused"
- RingDroid - crashes when I select the "Facebook Pop" button
- Layar - screen is rotated 90 degrees at all times
There have been others, but usually I just uninstall them right after discovering it doesn't work right.

I have been trying for hours now to get my HTC Hero phone upgraded to 2.1, but am still having problems. After fixing my HTC Sync issue, now I have the RUU Setup (2.1 Executable to upgrade) to deal with.
I try to open the executable file, both normally and as administrator, but all it would give me is a loading screen for about four seconds. The loading bar would go to the end, and then close down. The wizard does not pop up at all. Can I get any help with this? It's been four hours since I've tried doing this.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit

Droid X newbie but not new to Android. I've had a Droid for a year (almost) and my work phone just got upgraded form a bb to an X. I'm having trouble with the stock email program being able to send email fro my personal account. I use pair networks for my email hosting. I am able to set up the account to work fine on K9 mail, but not the stock email program. My corporate exchange email doesn't like K9 mail for some reason, so I don't want to use that for personal email if I have to. I notice on K9 mail, there's an option to check to not login for outgoing mail, but on the stock email program, it always asks for user name and pw in the outgoing settings. I have tried leaving them blank, but to no avail.

I've had my Droid since November and I guess I went into autopilot since because I never had a problem doing this. But now that I had to replace my phone, I no longer know how to set any 'ole mp3 file as a notification or ringtone in other programs.
For example, I used to be able to go into the messaging or Google Voice app and from there choose the "select ringtone" and then be given a list of apps I had that let me browse through ALL of my mp3 files. Now when I choose "select ringtone," I'm only able to access the system ringtones and notifications.
So what app do I need to download that'll enable me to browse through all audio files for any app's notifications and ringtones?

I'm creating a simple game for Android and faced with a problem: Idea is to have a huge "map" image file and re-draw only small part of it (320*480) depending on user actions.
I didn't find a better solution than using "public static Bitmap createBitmap (Bitmap source, int x, int y, int width, int height)" method and decided to try it (expected huge performance degradation), but actually it's appeared that this method changes source bitmap and when i call it second time source size is significantly reduced. For instance this code:

I've been adding and changing things constantly on my Droid X since I got it, as I know most of you have. I thought I'd make this thread to show some newcomers a decent app list, and home screen setup. If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to ask.I'll start with my current apps, and then post some pics of my home screens.

In my app, I use the MediaPlayer, the sound comes from the speaker. I just want to know how to play the music in the earpiece. The dev guide says that "You can play back the audio data only to the standard output device; currently, that is the mobile device speaker or Bluetooth headset. You cannot play sound files in the conversation audio." But actually I have seen some apps that can play sound in the channel which conversation audio comes from.
Did I miss anything?

Is there any function/library/API which can detect the language of a particular piece of text (no internet connection)? i.e. for an input text "This is a sentence", it should detect the language as "English". Or for "Esto es una sentencia" it should detect the language as "Spanish".

How can I setup my apps to download to the SD card without having to fash a custom rom? I've tried a few roms here and there but nothing really caught my attention long enough to stick with them.
I read somewhere about booting into recovery and partitioning my sd card from ext2 to ext3 or something like that, but when I go into recovery I don't see that option.

I chat a lot on AIM and Yahoo messenger, so naturally I'd like an IM app for my phone. I use Pidgin on my home PC, but I don't think it's available for Android yet, so I installed Nimbuzz.
Nimbuzz works great, except that whenever the screen goes dark on idle, it disconnects. This is obviously unacceptable, because the screen often goes dark before the reply to my last IM arrives, making the other party think I've "hung up" on them. I decided to try Trillian instead, but it does the same exact thing.
Is there an IM app out there that actually stays connected? It doesn't seem like this should be such a complicated thing!

I'm looking into some mileage tracking apps so I can track my mileage at work. There are several on the market that work via gps. Basically you press a button when you start your trip and another button when you end it. My question is about how these apps actually track you. Do they track your location as the crow flies (i.e. they look at your start and end and calculate the distance straight between) or do they calculate based on the actual roads you have to take to get from A to B? I'm wondering if I'd be better off with just an app where I record my miles directly and don't mess with GPS. Can anyone recommend some good mileage tracking apps?
