Android :: Configure The Web Browser Cache Size?
Jul 30, 2009
Configure the web browser cache size? In HTC's new product HERO, they limit the cache size from 100KB to 6MB, and user can configure it manually. It can prevent browser sucking up memory space too much.

I'm implementing an image cache system for caching downloaded image.
My strategy is based upon two-level cache:
Memory-level and disk-level.
My class is very similar to the class used in the droidfu project
My downloaded images are put into an hashmap and the Bitmap objet is wrapped inside a SoftRererence object.
Also every image is saved permanently to the disk.
If a requested image is not found into the Hashmap<String,SoftReference<Bitmap>> it will be searched on the disk, readed, and then pushed back into the hashmap. Otherwise the image will be downloaded from the network.
Since I store the images into the phisical device momery, I have added a check for preserve the device space and stay under a 1M of occupied space:
CODE:.................
This method is called sometime afte a disk writing:
CODE:..............
What I'd like to add is the same check on the HashMap size to prevent it will grow too much. Something like this:
CODE:.....................
My question is:
What could be a right MAX_MEMORY_SIZE value? Also, Is it a good approach? A good answer also could be: "Don't do it! SoftReference is already enough"

in HTC Sense, we can choose widgets of different size after tapping a single entry in the widget list. Is this also possible in pure Android Framework? I have tried to modify the widget's size in the configure Activity, but failed.

My app has a WebView which displays Google maps. I'm trying to limit the cache size to a reasonable one - like 2MB. After checking with settings->applications->manage applications I found out that regular page load gets the cache to 900kb. And dispite my efforts, I can't limit the cache size or monitor when the cache limit is being reached. If I'm playing with the map on the webview, the app can even reach 10MB and no "ache max size reached" message is received.

I do really love cloud computing... But, Google seems to have forgot something: set a limit to the cache size.
I have a Nexus S and my poor 16Gb internal memory is saturated because of caches: Google+, Android Gallery (Picasa), Google Music and Google Listen all fight for the sdcard space.
The only apps who have explicit cache settings is Google Listen... The others don't have obvious options. I have 10K songs, 10-20K photos, etc.. I need to access them, but I need to limit the cache size.
Is there a way to easily limit cache size per apps?

I am wondering if it is possible to limit the size of the dalvik-cache. I am looking for an alternative to putting it on the sdcard. Maybe I could create a partition on the internal storage for the cache?

I went to do a nandroid backup and it failed, "no space on my SD card".
Thats weird, as usually have at least 4 gig on my Nexus S 4g.
Poking around, it was the cache from Google plus,).[url].... That, coupled with my titanium backup of same ate my SDCARD. easy to fix Titanium from backup it up, but the cache is still several gigs large. 40,000 + files with [number].screen extensions.
I have like 2 friends on google+, 3 posts, and can not for the life of me figure out what in the world all that data is.
I'm going to remove the data , freeze the app, but just wanted to know if noticed a disproportionate amount of data in the Google+ app compared to the amount of activity/usage I have on google+.

During my activity I'm sending an intent to the browser in order to display a webpage :
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("http://ww.mywebpage.com"); startActivity(i);
I need to make sure that before sending the intent the browser cache and history are cleared so that the page get loaded from server directly and not from phone.
So far I've found the 2 following but I'm not sure they are used correctly :
Browser.clearHistory(getContentResolver());
Browser.clearSearches(getContentResolver());
Also with that cache is not cleared.

My browser got a bit out of whack (for some reason the default Google search page stopped displaying the search field). Also the 'data' was taking up almost 10MB and I'm running low on application disk space (dammit they have to find a way to let us store apps on our sdcards) Anyway.. I did a "clear data" thing on the browser, thinking this would only clear temporary internet files, but it reset everything (wiped out my favorites and saved passwords.

I have a question for any out there in Eris-land. I have the stock browser cache set to the 6mb max that the app settings allows--but it sometimes ends up larger than that when I go to clear it in the Application settings. How is that so? Also, how exactly does the cache work? Does it store visited pages then keep adding to it until it's at the max storage? Do older cached pages get bumped for newer ones? Does the browser get sluggish if the cache is full? (I haven't noticed any issues myself.) Finally, if I set the max cache setting for less than the 6mb cap, (say, 3mb), will that make the browser less efficient at loading pages? I'm curious since the stock browser doesn't use SD card for storage and cuts into the main phone memory.

There are a couple of options within the browser I didn't find until after searching for it, so I thought I would share it with the rest of the community in order to help out.
-Everyone should clear the browser cache and previous history in order to save internal phone memory. To do this go to BROWSER press the MENU button and press MORE. There should be a list of things in there but what you should be interested in is the last item which is SETTINGS. From there in privacy settings there will be options to clear both cache and history.
- Another little tip I wanted to share was viewing webpages in landscape mode without opening your keyboard. To do this simply press the MENU button from within the BROWSER and go down to FLIP ORIENTATION. You should realize tho by doing this you browser will continue to be in landscape the next time it's used. In order to return it to it's normal portrait mode just follow these steps once again.
-There are a number of other things you can mess around with or find with the MENU button within the browser so just take a look at it yourself even if you don't want to do any of these tips.

I synced up with my computer after uninstalling unused apps and clearing the browser cache and a few others, just general clean up to keep the phone running smooth. After roaming around my sd card, I came across this. A total of 84 cache files totaling 3.24mb. What is this from and is it ok to delete them? I'm assuming it is since it is just cache, which you can delete any of theme xcept for google nav (force close issues).

We have one html page whose backgroud is an image(1024px*600px) with no-repeat. We displayed it in Browser rightly on 1.6 HVGA(160) and WVGA(240) emulator and scrollbar displaed on both sides. But we got different result when testing on 2.1 HVGA(160) and WVGA(240) emulator. On 2.1 HVGA(160), the background image is scaled smaller and we saw large wide margin on the right. On 2.1WVGA (240), There are two margins on right and bottom sides. There is no scrollbar displayed on 2.1. And we put few small element in our html page.

I'm working on a site that's supposed to scale fluently down to low resolutions, so that it would work just as well on a phone. This works well in Firefox and Chrome when I just make the window small, but when I try it out on an actual Android phone (Nexus One running Android 2.2), it renders it super-huge! (Using JS's window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight properties, it seems the viewport resolution it reports is 800x1271!.Is there a way to render the page at actual-size in the browser window so I can have my full design show up on the phone? User-agent sniffing is allowed, JS is allowed but discouraged.

Ever since the 2.1 OTA upgrade,when I open my web browser it defaults to an extremely tiny size.I'd describe it as fit-to-screen where the entire web page will be fit to the size of the phone screen, thus making the words unreadable.I have to use my fingers to expand it before I can read it.But before the upgrade, it would open by default to a size that was at least readable.How can I change the default size of the web page?

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

I am currently developing a dictionary application with voice database. I would like to know about the current Android limitation on the file size. I am using a self-provided sqlite database ( > 50mb ) . I tested that once the built .apk size exceeds ~30mb the app will not be installed onto the simulator (INSTALL_FAILED_ INSUFFICIENT _STORAGE). Could anyone confirm me that if up until now there is no way to embed such large size files in a single apk ( Aimed to sell at Google Market without requiring user to download datafile afterwards). Also, is there a limitation of 1,048,576 bytes for a single file in the assets folder ?
