Android :: App That Can Turn Off Wifi Whenever Put Phone To Sleep?
Nov 2, 2010
Is there an app that can turn off my wifi whenever I put my phone to sleep? To conserve battery, I always have to turn off my wifi before I turn it off, and turn it back on when I unlock it. After a few days of this, it gets pretty annoying. I'm used to the iPod touch where when you sleep it, the wifi automatically turns off to save battery,and when you unlock it, and turns it back on. It would really save me the time.
Also I noticed this Wifi sleep policy thing. I don't really understand, can someone elaborate or explain more. Is it that when your not using your wifi for +15 min, it automatically turns off? Do you turn it on manually, or does it do it auto when you starting using wifi programs like browser.

My android 4.1.2 really turns off the wifi when in sleep mode. I see it in the battery monitor.
But after I formated the cellphone, It started with the bug of not turning off the wi-fi in the sleep mode, even when set to do it Maybe some app that I installed before has changed some internal settings!
Before, my battery was lasting almost 4 days, I not use it too much, but now it lasts 2 days only... and I have sure that it's because of the wi-fi bug.

I have a service which polls a server at certain intervals. I use an AlarmManager and a BroadcastReceiver to start the service. My problem is that after a certain duration, even though the WiFi is still enabled, but for some reason, my application can't contact the server. I get an "Unreachable network" error. Note that I've already acquired a partial wake lock as well as a wifilock. Here's my code for the BroadcastReceiver.
public class ServiceAlarmBroadcastReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
WakeLock wakeLock = null; WifiLock wifiLock = null;
try { PowerManager pm = (PowerManager) context .getSystemService(Context.POWER_SERVICE);
// acquire a WakeLock to keep the CPU running
wakeLock = pm.newWakeLock(PowerManager.PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK, "MyWakeLock");
if(!wakeLock.isHeld()){ wakeLock.acquire();
} Log.i("ServiceAlarmBroadcastReceiver", "WakeLock acquired!");
WifiManager wm = (WifiManager) context.getSystemService(Context.WIFI_SERVICE);
wifiLock = wm.createWifiLock(WifiManager.WIFI_MODE_FULL , "MyWifiLock");
if(!wifiLock.isHeld()){ wifiLock.acquire();
} Log.i("ServiceAlarmBroadcastReceiver", "WifiLock acquired!");
context.startService(new Intent(context, ThePollerService.class));
} finally { // release the WakeLock to allow CPU to sleep
if (wakeLock != null) { if (wakeLock.isHeld()) {
wakeLock.release(); Log.i("ServiceAlarmBroadcastReceiver", "WakeLock released!");
} } // release the WifiLock if (wifiLock != null) { if (wifiLock.isHeld()) { wifiLock.release();
Log.i("ServiceAlarmBroadcastReceiver", "WiFi Lock released!"); } } } } }

I recently started having this problem. I set the screen time out for 15 seconds but the phone won't go to sleep unless I manually turn it "off." I've tried restarting the phone which helps but eventually it starts acting up again. As i type this, I haven't touched the phone in about 3 mins and the screen is still on. Any help? I;m wondering if it's an app I installed?

back with 2.1 there was the issue with GPS, and once it was activated not allowing the phone to "sleep." You could see the results of this in the "Battery History" screen that Spare Parts would give you.First of all this does not seem to be fixed with 2.2 unless im missing something in my settings, and actually it seems to have gotten worse.Even when i change my WiFi Sleep Policy to turn off when "screen is off" it seems as though the phone cannot go to sleep, and my Wifi is not turning off as it should.

I want my Android phone to share its internet connection with other wifi enabled devices. Seems so cool to have a laptop and a couple ipods or something sharing the connection.
I know this can be done if the phone is rooted, or whatever you call it, but isn't there an app that I can download and make it work without needing to hack the phone? I know PDA net works pretty well, but that's not quite what I'm looking for. You have to connect the phone to the computer via USB or bluetooth, and it gets on the internet through there. I want to be able to have multiple devices quickly and easily jump on the Androids connection.

I'm seeing that some users are downloading data via my application and their connection is dropped because the WiFi is going to sleep. Could I somehow take control over WiFi to keep it alive and once I'm done I return it to it's default state?

But I dont know where to get the apps listed below. Am I missing something?
Turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. Other devices can connect via wireless and share your phones internet. Take screenshots of your phone from your phone. Better memory management, your phone will never slow down. Overclock your phone, more speed! (If possible!) Full backup ability. Backup your whole phone state. Restoring this backup puts your phone in the exact same condition as the backup. Use 'Market Enabler' to access paid apps if currently unavailable in your country.

I don't own an Android 4.3 tablet yet but I need to know the following things.I wanted to restrict my device so that a user is unable to change any settings (in particular turn on/off WiFi) and disable all applications except one.How strict is the restriction?
If I disable all apps except one what will the restricted user be able to do?
In an ideal scenario I'd like the restricted user to do only 3 things:
a) turn the tablet on/off
b) turn the application of my choosing on/off
c) all other options would be disabled
d) the restricted user should NOT see any data of the administrator

I am leaving the country and would like to be able to check my email using wifi, but want to prevent getting roaming charges incase the data/phone connection kicks on. I know that if you turn on airplane mode, it will not allow you to turn on wifi. Is there a way, or an app that will allow you to do this.

From what I can tell, if you turn on WiFi the phone never sleeps even in standby mode. Is this a known issue or has anyone else noticed this. I noticed this using Spare Parts and turning off and on things until I saw it was wifi that keeps it awake.

Anyone else having a problem of not having the screen turn on when you press the power button from sleep? It doesn't happen often but it does happen. This is my second Captivate as my last one would shut itself off randomly and that phone also had this problem.Yes, I make sure I pressed the power button and waited a couple seconds to make sure it just wasn't lag but I can guarantee you it is not. Like I said, it doesn't happen all the time but maybe once every 2 days. I'm guessing it's a slight problem with other users as it happened on my last phone but I'm not sure. Hopefully it's a software issue.

i have just got a new htc desire and love it have read this http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/59664-htc-desire-tips-tricks.html which is very good but have a few qu's:
1) do background apps use any/much power?
2) does wi-fi switch itself off if it is not needed or when there is no connection available? (i have wi-fi at home and unlimited internet so if i leave wi-fi on when i'm at home, after i leave will it switch itself off?)
3) is there an app for sleep that monitors your sleep using the inbuilt sensor so that it wakes you up when you are ready with a set time period (for example 7:30-8:00) and monitors how much you move about at night?

I have a smartq t20 tablet (great cheap tablet!) running ICS, my question is, when I leave wifi on all the time, what happens when the tablet goes to sleep (not awake according to the battery details)?I can leave a download running and it would continue when the screen is off, does this mean my tablet is never going into deep sleep? Or is that unrelated?
I know the wifi itself drains more battery when left on even if it isn't being utilized but I was wondering about the CPU side of it.

Mobile phone. I bought it year and a half ago, and have changed operating systems few times (custom roms). Now I have Pristine JB Slim custom ROM, i have installed it 1-2 months ago (cant remember exactly), and everything was okay for first half period, but then it started to crush after mobile data/wifi was turned on.
When I turn on MD/WIFi, its usually okay till 76% of battery, but then screen starts to blink for few seconds and turns off immediately after. When I turn it on again, it turns off again after 1-2 minutes, and sometimes even warns me that i have to charge it cause battery has only few % left (most of time just 1). And I have to charge it again to work normally (well, until it starts to go crazy again )
Before i start to install other roms again. So. Is it faulty battery, bad ROM or something else?

I'm confused about the WifI Sleep Policy. What does it mean for wifi to sleep, does it mean to stop searching? Mine is currently set to "when screen turns off", but I've seen others suggest that it be set to "never".

I downloaded Locale recently and it looks like a good app. I have set it to turn on my Wifi shortly before I get up in the morning to allow it to download some files (Guardian App and hopefully some podcasts). I've set Guardian to only download the newspaper via Wifi. For some reason Locale doesn't seem to be able to switch the Wifi on unless I awake the phone from sleep. I've been into the Wifi sleep policy Setting menu on the Hero and set it to never. Any ideas why it's not working?

What is your take on the WiFi sleep policy. I do like the fact that Wi-Fi can remain on all the time, but will it be a drain on my battery? Is it better to keep the Wi-Fi to sleep on screen shut off? I am near a Wi-Fi connection for most of the day and always at home.

If you go to Settings->Wireless and Networks -> Wifi Settings and then hit the Menu button (the one with for squares on the bottom left) and go to advanced there is an option for Wi-fi Sleep Policy. It looks like the default is to turn off wi-fi and switch to mobile data when the screen turns off? Is this the optimal setting? Wouldn't you want it to never turn off (assuming you are in range of wifi)? That way any alerts etc. are all handled over wifi instead of data?
