Android :: Way To Set A Named Method In Button.setOnClickListener?
Dec 29, 2009
Most samples that I see appear to use an anonymous method in a call like button.setOnClickListener(). Instead, I'd like to pass in a method defined on the Activity class that I'm working in. What's the Java/Android equivalent of the following event handler wiring in C#?

Let's say I have a few buttons in a LinearLayout, 2 of them are:
mycards_button = ((Button)this.findViewById(R.id.Button_MyCards));
exit_button = ((Button)this.findViewById(R.id.Button_Exit));
I register setOnClickListener() on both of them:
mycards_button.setOnClickListener(this);
exit_button.setOnClickListener(this);
How do I make a SWITCH to differentiate between the two buttons within the Onclick ?
public void onClick(View v) {................

Basically I have created a blackjack game (first using just java) and it falls under an infinite while loop (this is so that the deck data is kept and everything works well. So first it deals the cards and then it needs to wait for either the hit button (which is displayed) or the stand button (which is displayed) to be clicked. I initially did this with a while loop that would keep checking if buttons were hit (basically when a button was hit, a static int would change and stuff would occur). However this just causes the droid to freeze up (thus far anyway) and also not refresh. So please someone tell me there is some way I can have my method pause until a button is pressed? I also need to know the proper way to use invalidate() so that my textviews, pictureviews and such can be updated as the methods change them.

I have a single screen with a bank of buttons below a ListView. Entries on the ListView light up in orange when I scroll so I assume that are selected. When I then press the "Delete" button I want the onClickListener to remove the currently selected entry. But getSelectedItemPosition() always gives me -1. If I can't hope to use the GUI controls in this way, please give me another way of getting the same result.I have even tried setting the onClickListener of the List View to store the index before the button is pressed (in case pressing the button unselects the entry) but even that is always -1 it seems.

I need to specify the full button images for both the up and down positions. My impression is that the most probable choice is to use an custom button based on the ImageView and specify the image for up and down positions. I am using the OnTouchEvent method to capture the ACTION_DOWN, but I'm not getting the ACTION_UP event.
Is there a better choice for creating a button that controls the full button image, catches the Down/Up and can subdivide the down time into time slices? If not, how do I catch the up event.
My application expects a screen touch on the "button" and not a keyboard action.

I can't figure out exactly why this fails. The application has android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permissions. I can create normal files with exactly the same name in the same location, but pipe creation fails. The pipe in question should be accessible from multiple applications. I suspect that noone can create pipes in /sdcard. Where would it be the best location to do so? What mode mast should I set (2nd parameter) Does application need any extra permissions?

I can create a new preferences file by calling Context.getSharedPreferences(String name, int mode), putting some values in the returned preferences' editor, and committing. However, I don't see an interface in the API to remove the created file when I no longer need it. I've tried Context.deleteFile(String name), passing in the same name argument from above, but that returns false, indicating the file wasn't actually deleted. I'm using MODE_PRIVATE, if that makes a difference. Browsing the source for context's implementation of the editor doesn't reveal any clues either, as far as I can tell. Any ideas? The background here is that I'm allowing my users to save copies of their "current" preferences so that they can restore previously saved settings. When they don't want those settings anymore, I want to remove the saved preferences file so it doesn't take up space. At the moment the best I can do is an edit().clear().commit on the file, which I believe will remove most of the contents. Not as good as delete, though.

On my Vibrant, I created a file called .nomedia with a view to place a ringtone file in it so that the ringtone file would not show in the music player library. However it has had the effect of hiding ALL my media files from my phone - non are accessible. When I mount (to a Mac) I cannot see a file named .nomedia and so cannot delete it, but all my media files are there. How to I get rid of the .nomedia file i cannot see?

Do anyone have a file in the root directory of your SD card named search.trace? I have one that is about 8.5 megs. I took a look at it but it didn't look like the entries were specific to a particular app. Looks like some system log. Anyone know if there would be a problem deleting it?

public class MyClass extends ActivityGroup {
@Override
public void onBackPressed() {
// do something
return;
}
but I'm getting the error The method onBackPressed() of type MyClass must override a superclass method. I'm relatively new to Java, I've seen here that people do it and it works for them Why I'm getting this error? I'm writing an app for android 1.5, could the problem be here?

In Eclipse, when I mouse hover over a built-in method, it displays a method definition including stuff like what the method does, input objects, return objects etc. If I have a yellow line (warning) under the method I'm trying to use, I can't get the mouse-over to show the definition. If I try hitting F3, I get a "The Jar of this class file belongs to container "Android 1.6" How do I show the definition of the method I am using when there is a warning?

I have 3 activities in my app: Activity1 -> Activity2 -> Activity3. Inside Activity3, if the user presses Back, I would like to return to Activity2. In Activity3's onPause event, I added a finish() statement. That's probably not even necessary, but I wanted to make sure this Activity gets cleaned up. This works fine.
However, while in Activity3, if the user presses Home or starts a new app (through notification bar or some other means), I want both Activity3 and Activity2 to finish. If the user returns to this app, he should resume with Activity1.
I have figured out how to do one or the other, but I can't figure out how to handle both cases, if it's even possible. Can I trap the "Back" button in Activity3 and send a message back to Activity2 telling it not to finish()? It seems like the Activities follow the same lifecycle flow (Pause, Stop) regardless of what you do to send them to the background. Just to answer the question of why I want this behavior, imagine that Activity1 is a login screen, Activity2 is a selection screen, and Activity3 is a content screen. If I press Back from the content page, I want to be able to make a new selection. If I exit via any other means (Home, notification bar), I want the user to be "logged out".
