Android :: How Can Button Click Method Find Out / Which Item Is Selected In ListView?

I have a single screen with a bank of buttons below a ListView. Entries on the ListView light up in orange when I scroll so I assume that are selected. When I then press the "Delete" button I want the onClickListener to remove the currently selected entry. But getSelectedItemPosition() always gives me -1. If I can't hope to use the GUI controls in this way, please give me another way of getting the same result.I have even tried setting the onClickListener of the List View to store the index before the button is pressed (in case pressing the button unselects the entry) but even that is always -1 it seems.

Each row of my view look like that:.............
When I click on the ImageButton "arrow", I trigger a method than need the id of the row to perform. By ID I mean the value of the field "_id" of the corresponding record in database. I did not find a direct way to do it, but I think I can if I get the index of the row in the ListView. Again, I don't know how to get this index from a click to a childview.

when I click on one item in the ListView that item's background changes to light gray, but when I continue to scroll through the list every 4th item has the background changed to light gray even though those other items have not been clicked. How do I make only the item I clicked be effected by the click?

I'm using a custom view to display items in a listview. For some reason every time the list is populated; the first item is shown as selected (ie; orange highlight). I've tried everything I can think about to solve it; any ideas?

Please Help me for getting the selected Item from a ListView. Items for the ListView are getting from a xml file. Elements of the ListView are filled up by the adapter(adpter contains ImageView and textView). I only need the TextView content from the ListView.By using the onItemClick i get only the index of the item.

An activity has a Button and a ListView. Initially, only the Button is visible. When the button is pressed, the ListView is displayed. When displayed, is it possible for me to show one particular item as selected/focussed?
A use case could be that suppose it is a list of language settings and when the list opens, the currently selected language must be shown as highlighted. If I know the index of the item, how to set it as focused on display?

I have a custom listview row that contains a number of textView components. Instead of the "standard" single text item, I have created a item where each listview row contains several bits of information. For this example, I have a record id, a name, and a description for each row in the listview. I have my listview populated via

but that still doesn't help either. What I really want is to get the value of the recordId within each selected listItem. Does anyone know how this would be accomplished? Here is my onItemClick event:

1) A ListView with many items (i.e. scrolling will occur at some point)
2) At the beginning, the selection is at the top (item #0)
3) User is scrolling down (i.e. we're not in touch mode)
4) For the first items, the selection is moving down without the list to scroll.
5) Once the selected item is reaching the middle of the list's viewport: the list starts to scroll-down.
6) Then, toward the end of the list: scrolling stops and the selection keeps moving down until the last item is reached.
It's a common feature in (keyboard-enabled) UI frameworks but I don't believe it's possible to achieve with Android, as for now... Right?

I have a ListActivity, and long-pressing on an item brings up a context menu. One item in the context menu is "delete", and that brings up a confirmation box (and AlertDialog). When the user presses OK in the confirmation dialog, I need to know the ID of the item that was originally selected, so that I can actually delete it.
The flow looks like this:
This event: Causes Android to call:
-----------------------------------------------------
Long press an item -> onCreateContextMenu()
Select context menu item -> onContextItemSelected()
call showDialog()-> onPrepareDialog()
user clicks OK -> onClick()
In onCreateContextMenu and onContextMenuSelected, I can get at the id of the selected item from the ContextMenuInfo. In onPrepareDialog, however, I no longer have access to that information. The rub is that onPrepareDialog needs this information to set up an onClick listener on its POSITIVE button.
I know that, during onContextMenuSelected, I can stash the selected item's ID away into a field of my activity. I have done that, and it works. But it's also really ugly. The statefulness that it introduces makes me uneasy. Has anybody else seen a better way to pass such information around than to use fields in the activity?

I have a listView of contacts that I got from the Android ContactManager sample. This list is showing up fine, but I can't figure out how to get info from the selected item, like "name" and "phone number".
I can get the selected position, but the result of the mContactList.getItemAtPosition(position) is a ContentResolver$CursorWrapperInner and that doesn't really make any sense to me. I can't get heads or tails from that.
Anyone know how I can get the name/id/phone number from the selected item in the listView?

As I mentioned in the email subject, I want to select an item (e.g. Department of Human Resource Management) in my ListView. And you can see that: I had try to use setClickable(true), setChoiceMode(ListView.CHOICE_MODE_SINGLE), setFocusable(true), setFocusableInTouchMode(true), no matter I use touch screen to click on the item or use the scroll ball on my mouse to select the item, it also doesn't work. Is there any mistakes in my coding? I hope someone can give me some ideas what I should do. because I am a beginner for developing Android application.

My activity runs in simulator, and I use mouse to control it. When I select the item in listview by turning scroll wheel, the background of item becomes orange. I've looked everywhere for a solution to this, but I can't figure out how to implement it. My OnItemClickListener was disabled somehow on my ListView rows, because I have an ImageButton in the row layout, which takes over the focus. There have been numerous questions I've found, but none of them have gotten me anywhere. I've checked this question, but I couldn't really make heads or tails of it. I just need a way to get the rows clickable so that I can detect when a row is pressed. Long press and focus work fine.

I have to develop one android application.
Here is the scenario:There are many images in a linearlayout. When selected, the layout should be displayed with another(gradient_bg_hover.xml) background. This works well now.
Now, I would like that when I open a new activity and come back to this one, the last selected layout should still be the highlighted one (with the (gradient_bg_hover.xml) background).

I created a ListView that contains a row which in turn contain text and a button. The idea is to have the button function as a delete button to remove the row from the list as well as the database. I order to do this I created an adapter to handle the button click. This code is below. Deleting the database record works fine, but I have not yet succeeded in refreshing the ListView so the record will no longer be displayed.

I am building a android aplication which will be consuming a json file from the internet. This json file contains a list of news from a particular website. Each json object contains information such like title, summary, descripition and web links for the news thumbnail and the original image.
I will be displaying in a listview three information: the news thumbnail, the title and the summary. Here resides my problem. I dont want to load all thumbnails from the internet if they wont be displayed. What I am trying to say is that why download a thumbnail from the 30th news if the user wont scroll down the image. So, i will, initially only download the thumnails from those news that are being displayed in the screen and when the user scrolls down to see more news, as soon as the list item appers to the screen i want to download the image and then display.
Is there a way to achieve this? Is it possible to find out if the list item is on the screen? I have been searching all over the internet for a solution for this but i am running out of ideas.

I'm developing a small application in with a list view filled with a compound component. This component has two text view and one button inside. One of the text view is invisible and when the button is clicked it should appear. I can show the list but i can't make the textview visible when the button is clicked. I don't know exactly how to explain this problem, but I'll try. I have a ListView with several items. Each item has inside a TextView and two ImageView. I want the ImageView change when I click on them, and I want to open a context menu when I press for a long time into the ListView item.For the ImageView, everything works properly. For the whole item, I can show the context menu after a long press, but my problem is that the ImageView changes as well when I am pressing the TextView, for example.I hope you understand my problem. I think that all the children of a view are affected by an event in the parent, but I am not sure.

I am a newbie coder and new to the SDK. I was just playing around with an app that i made. I wanted to know as to how to retrieve the item id of the selected item from the spinner when the spinner is re- populated.
For example, I created 2 spinners, if you selected item 0 from spinner1 then spinner2 will have a bunch of items and if you selected item 1 from spinner1 then spinner2 will have a different set of items. Now, my question is that when i select item 1 from spinner 1 then the items in spinner2 dont have different ids. So how do i differentiate from the two sets of data?
To illustrate,
User selected item 0 in spinner1 -> spinner2 gets data from array1 -> item 0 in spinner2 has id '0' and item text is "apple"
User selected item 1 in spinner1 -> spinner2 gets data from array2 -> item 0 in spinner2 has id '0' and item text is "oranges"
I know this sounds confusing but i hope the right people understood it..
