Android :: Using Google Map Data API On Platform
May 2, 2010
I was checking out the Google Maps Data API and I was wondering if I can follow their Java Development guide to use it on the Android platform? I want to display routes that I have created on Google Maps on the phone.

Would it be possible for me to build an application that enables people to encrypt call coming to me with my public key and then for me to decrypt the call data at my end using my own private key. This way I basically have a more secure communication channel which I am assuming because RSA is hard to crack would be difficult to monitor.I am asking this question from a research point of view and have absolutely not considered the factor as to how computationally feasible would such an application be. I would just like to know if there is a way for me to intercept my outgoing data using any built functions.

According to the API doc, Android seems to support for changing the data size of Parcel container. And there is no notice limiting the size of Parcel. The document is here http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/Parcel.html#setData...()
On the other hand, when our developers are doing some tests on this, the size is dependent on the platform and devices.
So i just wonder whether there is any limit on the data size of Parcel. At least this information should be mentioned in the API document.

Snow Leopard has been published for several weeks, Eclipse also provide an 64bit Cocoa version on 3.5, but the Android SDK still only support the 32bit mode on Mac, why? It's emulator also still use QuickDraw to draw interface, maybe Google has forgotten us.

1) What Android-compatible hardware platforms (boards, like "beagle board") can you recommend for hobby robotics? Where can I see a list of Android-friendly boards with support of serial (or parallel) connections?
We are going to move our Java ME robotics project (http:// www.RoboHobby.com) to Android platform, but what hardware to choose?
2) What can you say about support of serial connection on Android- based phones? Does it work in reality? As I remember, in the Java ME world not all cell phones manufacturers supported serial connections on their J2ME implementations. For example serial connections were supported on some models of Siemens and Sony-Ericson, but they were not supported on Nokia and Sumsung, etc.
What is going on with serial connection support in the Android World? Is this supported in reality? On which cell phones?
3) Is it possible to use on Android devices (boards) not BlueTooth/USB conection, but wired connection, like RS232 "COM" port on PC?
I see funny wordplay - Android as a Google project and Android as a human-like robot. :-)

I followed this tutorial: http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html
and it runs ok, except when I click on my icon in the map, the dialogue box does not come up. And the application stops.
I don't know what is google api; can someone explain it to me please? Does this mean that the code in above tutorial will not run on an android handset?
Here is my code:

For my CS bachelors I am doing a Senior project using android and google maps.My vision was to do a (relatively) simple Dijkstra shortest path using google maps road data. I was going to add elevation change along with 2D distance. I am doing well playing with maps in android but I am completely stumped trying to access google maps data in any sort of searchable form. How would I go about accessing the data for say intersections of roads (lat/long) in a particular area? There has to be a way to pull that data in some sort of tree form. It seems like it may be possible with kml?Any pointers would be awesome.I want my paths to follow roads but If i cant this is going to turn into an orienteering application fairly fast.

The backup/restore function in android says that the data is saved to your Google account.
I know where the contacts are stored they can be found from accounts.
What I want to know is how to access everything else?
It says app data and wifi passwords etc etc. If I wanted to delete all of this data and start again is the point I'm trying to achieve.

I need to use a different datasource inside a map in Android than the google provided data. Is there a way to change the datasource to a tile based service (openstreetmap.org for example)?
Or are there other Android map APIs which are OpenSource and can be adapted (except Ericcson Mobile Maps - this doesn't work for me because of the licence)?
It doesn't have to have a server side part - a rich function library would be enough.

I've been trying to wrap my head around this and it's probably an obvious answer but why can't I dial out using my GV number unless I have a data connection active? Per Google and from what I can see, no VoIP is being used and it seems to me when I have a data connection and use GV to dial out it just dials a Google number first. I'd think the call would be made to GV, GV would patch the call through to the person being called and pass on the GV caller ID number. So why does the app need to have a data connection to work?

I use HTC Desire (updated to Froyo) and at home Google Maps Navigation works great and I never worry about the data connection because I have a large data allowance each month. But I'm now in Germany for a few days and I don't really want to pay roaming rates. So, I find that I can of course use the hotel wifi to plot the route.
This can work but most of the time it doesn't. The problem is that the route is not downloaded (at least not completely) until the phone has a GPS fix. Usually this happens after I'm out of range of the wifi signal and so I have no route to navigate. Is there a way of downloading the route without needing the satellite fix to validate it? This would make life so much simpler!

I'm working on an Android project that focuses on knowing how close you are to buildings. I wanted to know if there is some way to extract the geographic information about the outlines of buildings out of the Google Maps API. The functionality I'm looking for is similar to what's going on in this app. (Click the link near the top of the page that says "View Live Sample".)

Has anyone had success using Google Data APIs Client Libraries. I can't seem to successfully use the GData Java client libraries in an Android app. I notice that there used to be some GData access classes in the Wireless packages that have been removed. Should I be using some map data classes in the com.google.android.maps classes I'm not seeing? I started to go down the path of accessing data through raw http calls, but it's a beating.

I need to write an application that sends data to the Google App Engine from Android. The data that I would like to send can be described by a typical database record. Each record has some integers, strings, dates, etc. I would like to keep the connection details hidden/secured so that someone can't create false data in the datastore, if it it's not too involved. My question is: what is a good way to get this data from Android devices into the GAE datastore? If you could post a link to the appropriate Android libraries, or a link to how this has been done in the past, that would be really helpful.

I have the following issue; a couple of months ago i had a Desire z (happy HTC One owner now) but it fell and it broke. Or atleast the phone itself/ screen does nothing. However i can hook the phone up to my pc and its get recognized and i can browse the phone with the command prompt.
My phone broke while i was on a trip in Thailand and unfortunately the info (email adresses from new friends) that i typed into google keep that night had not been synced yet...
I would very much like to get this info off of my phone and read it or transfer it to my new phone or something (reading it on the pc has my preference as my HTC One is not rooted).

I am trying to install Android on Beagleboard (TI's OMAP35x chip). They have provided toolchain to build the OS and port it on the chip. Now the next question is developing Android apps. I am interested in knowing about the Java SDK for android. So can I use the standard SDK provided by google, so far I cannot find any SDK provided by TI for Java.Putting it in simple terms, will an application developed on standard Android SDK work on beagleboard.
