Android :: Send Data To Google Application Engine Datastore
Dec 31, 2009
I need to write an application that sends data to the Google App Engine from Android. The data that I would like to send can be described by a typical database record. Each record has some integers, strings, dates, etc. I would like to keep the connection details hidden/secured so that someone can't create false data in the datastore, if it it's not too involved. My question is: what is a good way to get this data from Android devices into the GAE datastore? If you could post a link to the appropriate Android libraries, or a link to how this has been done in the past, that would be really helpful.

I am trying to post data to the Blob Store on google's app engine, this code runs without throwing any exceptions, but on the blobstore end there is no log on the post request at all. The server side stuff works when i post using a form (albeit with mime data). I have allowed my android app to use internet. This is a stab in the dark but if any of you folks might have had an issue like this before perhaps the problem i am having might ring a bell

I'm working on a widget that will change the data it is displaying when a user taps on it. This would normally be easy to deal with, but my app widget provider is handling multiple widget instances that have different sets of data. With that being said, when a user taps on the widget, a PendingIntent is launched that calls the changeData() method. Inside the intent that is launched is where I store the widget ID so changeData() knows which data set to use. At first I was storing widget IDs in the intent's extras, but I found out that there is a bug in how Android widgets handled widget intent extras so now I am trying to store the widget by passing a URL using the setData() method(formatted like content:widgetId I.E. content:24, etc.).
This is how I am setting the data for the PendingIntent:
Intent changeData = new Intent("com.tonycosentini.mintdroid.CHANGE_DATA");
changeData.setData(Uri.parse("content:" + currentWidgetId));
PendingIntent changeDataPendingIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(this, 0, changeData, 0);
However once I try to test this, the onRecieve() method that is usually called when a widget is tapped is no longer called. Is there something I need to setup in my Android Manifest file for this work properly or is there something I'm doing completely wrong?

I'd like to be able to send a POST request from an Android app to App Engine and have it linked to the user's Google account.I read that you need to obtain an authentication token and send it with the POST request. Does Android provide a way to request this token?And how would GAE process it?I feel like this should be easy and I'm missing something obvious.

I'm currently working on a project that uses Google App Engine as a server. I see that prior to the Android 2.0 SDK there was no way to directly access a user's Google Account information for the purposes of authentication. Do the new Account Manager APIs now make it possible to automatically log a user into a GAE app? Is anyone else working on something like this? Are there any publicly available examples on how to accomplish this?

I have spent two days trying to decide on a way to upload and download data to the Google App Engine. Do I use REST or simple HTTP post/get? Do I use JSON or XML? Do I use java or Python. I am thinking probably use python and probably use REST. But which one out there? There are so many to choose from. None seem to work out-of-the-box, but need faffing around with bits of code from here and bits of code from there. And is not clear at the outset what am taking on or what the limitations are.

I am writing a syncadapter using google account and app engine. The account appears in account and sync, but when I try to select the account for syncing, I am getting a hard database error. I am trying to figure if this error is on mobile or the app engine. Further, what can be causing this error. Another error that I am getting is failed to find provider info.

I would like to write a client application for Android that uses the Google App Engine as a database backend. My Android client would connect to the App Engine to save information, then it would connect later for reports. Is it possible to use the App Engine as a backend like this?

A REST XML (not JSON!) Web Service should exchange XML Schema specified XML between a Google App Engine and an Android app. I wanted to use XStream for both, however, I could not get it to work for the Google App Engine, therefore to me Apache XMLBeans is the next best choice (JAXB does not work on both).
However, with Google App Engine there is no problem, but on Android, I get several severe exceptions (eg. due to the usage of the Stax API with its javax.xml.* packages). So, Is there any other XML-binding possibility to stream XML documents on GAE and Android? If not, is it possible to patch Apache XMLBeans to work with Android?

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

For my CS bachelors I am doing a Senior project using android and google maps.My vision was to do a (relatively) simple Dijkstra shortest path using google maps road data. I was going to add elevation change along with 2D distance. I am doing well playing with maps in android but I am completely stumped trying to access google maps data in any sort of searchable form.How would I go about accessing the data for say intersections of roads (lat/long) in a particular area?There has to be a way to pull that data in some sort of tree form. It seems like it may be possible with kml?Any pointers would be awesome.I want my paths to follow roads but If i cant this is going to turn into an orienteering application fairly fast.

to start with I've gone through the entire notepad tutorial, I'm a professional game programmer who has some extra time. (though most of my time has been in C++, I did take a year or two of Java classes in college, and remember some of it). I'm not sure the site is a good site to ask questions like this.. If someone has a Forum that might be a good place to ask these newbie questions, please feel free to point me in the direction. I've examined a few of the samples, and think I've a grasp of what I want to do. I've a three to four project plan for some Android releases to sharpen my skills, but since this is my first project and I have never really developed for a mobile phone or the android before, I'd like to make sure I have a solid plan.The first project is an example of the license plate game, however I want to do a few things to change it. Heck maybe when I'm done it'll become a bingo style game, with bluetooth connectivity, you never know. The base idea is I want to offer a list of states, with checkboxes next to them. so to do this, I'll be starting with a Linear List layout similar to the note pad example, and then have a row that is only a Checkbox. I can use text and call strike through if it's been checked off. Perhaps offer an option to not show them if they are checked.
But I want the list to be generated from a set of lists. Maybe all of America's states, maybe reasonable American states (no Hawaii, no Alaska) maybe a North American list, (add in Mexico and some Canadian provinces), a European list, who knows. I'd probably have to have a pop up window that lists all of the lists I suppose using a radiogroup of some sort. So then as far as the data, after weighing options I think best solution is to make a database with two fields, "checked" and "name".I figure I can use the menu for most of the user interaction (aside from clicking on stuff we want to check off) with maybe a few context menu items, I understand how to make all of those already so I should be good. The question I have is what is the best way to populate the lists? Should I create raw data, and have different files for all the lists? Or is there some other way to do this? I've seen this done on the searchable dictionary, but I'd like to hear what people who have actually generated the data like this before. In addition is there an easy way to look at the sql database these applications create, or do you have to run searches on them and output the data? Finally any other suggestion or advice? I definitely want to try to get something like this on the market so I can see the full life cycle and see if anyone actually likes it. (luckily there's not a plethora of them already) but I also want a few people to look over my code if they're willing when I'm done to make sure I've done this right or at least not missing any basic mistakes.

I have a TabActivity, and the tabs point to sub activities. Is there a way I can send a 'message' to those child activities? I just want to pass a string across, not sure if this is possible.
I have some data being fetched by the parent TabActivity, and the child tabs can't do anything useful until the parent is done fetching. When fetching is complete, I'd like to pass that data to the child activities so they can do something useful with it.
Normally I'd set the data to be passed in the Intent when first creating the activity, but in this case I can't do that.

Both emulators can send and receive sms. However there is no difference between a data sms and a text sms in the incoming intent.

My question is we can pass data using intents. The same thing if i am apply to my application i got the data as null.
