Android :: Using Eclipse Can It Get Faster?

Sep 19, 2010

I use Eclipse for my development. The problem with it is, I find it incredibly memory hungry... it often takes ages to load up, when I save a file it hangs for a while (saying "Building workspace" in the bottom right hand corner), and is just generally slow.I wondered if anyone had any tips for streamlining it for Android. I don't use it for anything else (if necessary, I will install a separate instance for general Java stuff) so I can't help thinking there are lots of modules and stuff I could get rid of which may help it run more smoothly.

Android :: Faster When Tethered

Nov 12, 2010

Buddy of mine rooted his EVO 4G and added tethering app. He showed me how I could connect my Samsung Captivate to his EVO via Wifi and surf using his cell (3G) connection. To my knowledge, he was connected using only 3G (no 4G signal there). However, page loads were MUCH faster on my phone when tethered to his phone than when I use my own AT&T 3G connection.

Android :: Make Games Faster?

May 17, 2009

I have done a simple game where I draw on a View and use invalidate() to force onDraw to be called. This however doesn't seem to scale at all since even for this little game it is quite slow. So what is the solution, to use openGL? that is what all games should? and then I should use frames rather than redrawing?

Android :: Canvas Faster Than OpenGL?

Dec 20, 2009

I have downloaded and run the SpriteMethodTest on my Droid but compiled to 1.6 Android. I am getting the very strange behavior that drawing bitmaps to *canvas* is faster than using OpenGL. At 100 sprites, I am getting about 64 fps for Canvas. For OpenGL, its around 34 fps.

I also ran the same test on the 1.6 emulator. 100 sprites came in at 30 fps for canvas, just 6 for OpenGL!

I was so astonished that I actually checked that the radio buttons were running the right tests.

Android :: How To Develop Faster Without The Emulator

May 31, 2010

Every time I have to bring the emulator (even on a fast Linux machine) to test an app is quite painful.

What would you suggest to speed up the development of an app w/o usinf the emulator?

I thought that JUnit for the logical parts would help.

Basically, I want to be able to test the app within Eclipse as much as I can before testing on the emulator.

For instance, if one needs to write a service that does not have much UI how to approach that problem?

Just look at all the comments of some pretty angry htc phone users lol

To be fair, I doubt that it would really take until Dec. 25th to get it done but its just ironic in my opinion with all the Samsung hate (by reason of software updates) as of late.

I do hope that Motorola, HTC, LG and Samsung all update their handsets very soon and timely though

Android :: 900ms Of Calcs Run Faster In Another Thread?

Apr 21, 2010

I have this audio analyzer app that fills a buffer with audiorecord, runs it thru a bunch of filters, and plots the filter out as a bunch of vertical bars. I timed the sampling, filtering and drawing with systemTimeMillis and it takes about 100ms,900ms and 50ms. I cant see how putting the calcs in another thread could speed it up any, but I'm just an old embedded c programmer. I guess linux is ticking every millisecond, and there must be a dozen linux tasks running, and I guess a task has a 'quantum' of ticks that it runs before linux preempts it (anyone know about these details?), but I just want it to run about 5 or 10 times faster.

Android :: Faster To Load A Layout In Java Or Xml?

Nov 18, 2010

Ok o my program i prefer to make the layout in java but i was wondering is it more efficient to make it in xml? i dont wanna test both and see whats faster but it feels like when my program call the oncreate (which is where all my layout building code is) takes about 2 secs to load, will loading a layout from xml be faster?

Also a second question, i know you can allocate two different layouts (one per landscape or portrait) but does it till rerun oncreate when you do this and rotate? i ask because im considering not using landscape at all in my app however it would be usefull in a few situations like text entry but is there a way to jump to lanscape without calling oncreate so it will load much faster?

Android :: Faster Way Than Math.atan2 For Arc Tangents?

May 24, 2009

Using arc tangents for interpreting accelerometers seems to be a pretty easy way to go to get a desired result. I just benchmarked (float)Math.atan2(x,y) and it's a very slow function. I checked FloatMath for Android 1.0 SDK and it has sin and cos but no tan or atan. Is there a faster way to do this?

Android :: Faster/better Apps Panel List?

This may be Nexus One specific, but I'm looking to replace the apps icons page (the list that scrolls around a virtual cube). Android :: Make Droid Emulator Run Faster?

Apr 18, 2010

The Android emulator is a bit sluggish. For some devices, like the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One, the app runs faster in the actual device than the emulator. This is a problem when testing games and visual effects.

How do you make the emulator run as fast as possible? I've been toying with its parameters but haven't found a configuration that shows a noticeable improvement yet.

Android :: Efficient Way To Make Database Query Faster ?

Sep 3, 2010

In my android app i need to get 50,000 database entry(text) and compare them with a value when the activity started(in onCreate()).I am doing this with the simplest way : i get the whole table from db to a cursor. However this way is too laggy. Are there any other way to do it more effective? The app is "scrabble solver" that is why i am not using WHERE close in my query (Take the whole data annd compare it with combination of the input letters). At first i was using a big table which contains whole possible words. Now i am using 26 tables. This reduced the lag and i am making database call on a thread that solved a lot problems too.It is still little bit laggy but much better.

Android :: Drawable Object Where I Can Store Points For Faster Paint?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm designing a custom view which is an X/Y Plot. It's a moving graph that scrolls to the left with time and new Y values are continuously coming in at 10 per second.

I've been able to make it work with an array of integers where the array index is the X value and the integer value is the Y value, but this seems horribly inefficient (Because every time it comes time to re-paint, I have to loop 800+ times to paint the graph). Then we do it all again 10 times a second. yuck.

Can anybody think of a paintable object that I can draw points to and perform some kind of scroll transformation and then just draw the new points each time, rather than the whole canvas?

Any other ideas out there?

Android :: Method To Draw Bitmaps Faster On Droid Canvas / OpenGL?

I currently have a game written using the Android canvas. It is completely 2D, and I draw bitmaps as sprites on the canvas, and it technically works, but I have a few features that I need to add that will require drawing many more bitmaps on the screen, and there will be a lot more movement.

The app needs more power.

What is the best way to go from this method of drawing Bitmaps on a canvas to using OpenGL so I can draw them faster?

Locating A GPS Faster?

Nov 8, 2012

I've just started creating some Android application and I successfully made application that locates user's latitude and longitude.

Well. The problem is that I am interested about the way how android does that with maps tools since my application starts a GPS and it takes like 10 minutes, before it finds a location indoors and maybe sometimes it doesn't even find a GPS indoors, but if I use Maps application that comes with phone it works fine indoors and outdoors it's same where I am.. the location I'm standing on is directly found without waiting any minutes. (I've changed a place and it's directly there without waiting)

Can it be done as easily as GPS locating?
