Android :: Use PreferenceActivity And Save Preferences In ContentProvider
Jul 19, 2010
Jeff Sharkey in this post (http://goo.gl/G3wt) shows how to create save application preferences in database by hack on PreferenceActivity.
It said i can use a ContentProvider, too.
Can you give me an example on how to save preferences from PreferenceActivity to ContentProvider?

I am having a problem with an application I am in the middle of writing which is causing me some serious headaches.
The situation is this:
The application allows the user to configure several different kinds of information in several activities.
One of the activities, which is a subclass of Activity, takes data from the user and stores it in a shared preferences instance that I create manually and edit in code. This activity requires a complex screen layout that I do not believe would work well with a PreferenceActivity, hence me rolling my own in this case.
Another one of the activities, which is a subclass of PreferenceActivity, is a straight forward list of preferences, each with a list options - standard stuff.
I am finding that any data that I store from the first activity, my bespoke preference screen which manually adds the data using a StoredPreferences.Editor instance is overwritten once the user selects an option in my activity that extends PreferenceActivity.

My application is used on multiple platforms so it saves it preferences to a file (rather than to the standard Android SharedPreferences).
Is there any easy of reusing the PreferenceActivity to save preferences to a file or is it a case of creating a whole new activity to do the job? If the latter is the case is there a layout I can use that will make the activity look like the normal preferences screen? PreferenceActivity uses com.android.internal.R.layout.preference_list_content but this doesn't appear to be available to apps for reuse.

I have my own custom Content Provider that loads a database which contains the settings information for my application.
I load the settings from the ContentProvider on the creation of my Settings activity.
My Settings activity is made up of a PreferenceScreen and Dialog based EditText's.
The following code shows how I use the preference screen and edit texts.
So as you can see from the first image this works and displays the menu with the information underneath.
The problem is in image two, when I click on a choice in the menu the dialog pops up but it is empty, I would like to be able to load the data from my content provider into the edit text in the dialog, so in image one it shows "Donal" as the user name so in image two "Donal" should also appear in the edit text in the dialog.
I would also like to be able to listen to the OK button in the dialog so when a user changes a setting I can update the data in my content provider.
what I'm trying to do?

I am using a PreferenceActivity to let the user set some values. I am feeding it the xml file with the defined preferences.
I have set all the android:defaultValue="" for them.
When I start my application, I need the preferences, or if they are not set yet manually, I want the default values:
CODE:.................
However, when android:defaultValue="true" I still get false. So, it looks like the defaultValues set in the XML are not used anywhere but when initializing the preferences-screen.
I don't want to hardcode the default values in the getBoolean() method. So, is there a way get the default-values with only defining these in 1 place?

I'm using a PreferenceActivity with a PreferenceScreen defined in a xml file. i want to make sure that the data set on a preference editor are valid (integer , integer in a range....)
So , i want to be able to intercept a click on a button of the EditTextPreference , check the validity of the data and if the data is incorect , display a message to the user and come back on the EditTextPreference.
What would be the best way to achieve that?

I have a ListView that has some minor visual preferences that are set in a PreferenceScreen. These preferences are simple booleans to show or not to show some specific TextViews on each item in my ListView.
Anyhow, when these preferences are changed, I need to notify my ArrayAdapter that the data has changed in order to get the list redrawn. However, doing this via an OnSharedPreferenceChangeListener wouldn't really be optimal because there are several preferences that you can change, that would cause an unnecessary amount of updates to the ArrayAdapter.
So, to the question: How can I identify when my ListActivity has occurred on the screen after closing my PreferenceActivity, which I then could use to check for changes in the preferences, and only then notify the ArrayAdapter.
The ArrayAdapter being an inner class of my ListActivity, which is set as a ListAdapter.

Currently, I'm using the following code across all of my activities in my app to store application level variables and carry values between activities..
prefs = this.getSharedPreferences("MyPrefs", Context.MODE_PRIVATE);
I didn't have a PreferenceActivity prior to this, but now I do and I am looking to store a few user prefs from this new PreferenceActivity in the same sharedPreferences tag, "MyPrefs".
I know I can access the PreferenceActivity SharedPrefs from my activities via
prefs = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this);
but I would like those values saved to my current sharedPreferences tag, "MyPrefs", but I'm not sure how to do this.

I have a PreferenceActivity with a bunch of (Sub)PreferenceScreens. Each such (Sub)PreferenceScreen represents an account and has the account-username as its title.
CODE:................
As the user enters sub-PreferenceScreen, and edits the account user-name, I want the outer PreferenceScreen to update it's PreferenceScreen-title for the account in question.
I've tried to add...
CODE:.............
But the accScreen.setTitle does not seem to take effect on the outer PreferenceScreen. I've note that calling onContentChanged(); actually makes it work, but I realize that this is probably not the preferred way of doing it.
I suspect I should call postInvalidate() on some view somewhere, but I really can't figure out on what view and when to do it.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2396153/preferencescreen-androidsummary-update may be experiening the same problem as me.

My android application has two kinds of preferences:
1) I have user preferences defined in res/xml/preferences.xml so that users can manage their preferences with a PreferenceActivity.
2) I'd like to define another file for global configuration preferences of my app.
What is the best way to manage my app config preferences? Should I create another XML file with config values or should I specify those config values in strings.xml? What is the best practice for managing config preferences?

There is no root element to choose from when I select the Preference type layout. If I press Finish, it doesn't do anything. See screenshot below.

However I want to be able to get the recipricant and the message text from the SMS Content Provider, can anyone tell me how to do this?
And also how to delete one message instead of an entire thread?

I want to add an extra field to the phonebook on android. The field contains a new contact method and when clicked it should start my own application/intent. I have created my own content provider that stores the information. I want to add this contentProvider to the phonebook in the same way organizations and email are added to the phone book. So how do i do this? I tried adding a new contact method but the field KIND needs an integer input which seems to be predefined to some specific methods (EMAIL, IM, ADDRESS etc)
So do i need to add a new type of KIND or can I link my contentProvider to the phone book so that it shows up as an extra field in the phone book?

All the example codes, tutorials or video I see, there is always one ContentProvider per SQL Table with the SQLiteOpenHelper extension defined as a private static class... Is it some sort of standard design...to have one ContentProvider per SQL Table? Or I can define one generic ContentProvider and use its instance for ever update? Is there some issue with that? Could anyone please help as my application has like 5-6 tables.

Maybe it's an easy question, but I've tried to understand why all the content providers seem not to close the DB that they use. In the NotePadProvider example (in other providers is similar), it's used a Helper to manage the DB (that extends of SQLiteOpenHelper).
This helper has a method to close the DB (http://developer.android.com/ reference/android/database/sqlite/SQLiteOpenHelper.html#close%28%29), but in all the providers that I have seen (even in the example), this method is never used.
For example, in the query method of the NotPadProvider we use the helper to open a DB
CODE:...........
The mOpenHelper is create in the "onCreate()" method, but there is no reference to a mOpenHelper.close() in all the provider (maybe because there is no "close()" method in ContentProvider).
Do we need to close the SQLiteOpenHelper object? When we use it inside a ContentProvider, where is the right place to close it?

I have a custom class, which represents my data-structure. This custom class is in a normal Java-library, which is included in both projects. I have one Project with a ContentProvider which provides this data to Activities of other Projects. And an other Project with an Activity, where I want to handle this data in objects of this custom class.
How can I get this data to the Activity? The Cursor [1] only supports primitive Types.

I have an AutoCompleteTextView working with a ContentProvider that correctly pulls known information from a database when the user is typing and presents it. However, I would also like to support the automatic hints/word choice list you get when using apps like the Messaging app. I haven't figured out how to get that thin bar of word choices to appear. Can some one clue me in on how to use that in combination with my existing ContentProvider?

What is the lifetime of a ContentProvider in Android? After onCreate() is invoked, will the ContentProvider persist unconditionally for the lifetime of the process?
My ContentProvider manages a list of records, but only 1 is designated "active" and will be accessed by different applications a lot. I was wondering if it's safe to cache the index of this active record in memory as a member of my ContentProvider to speed up lookup.

I am brand new to developing for android and have hit something of a stumbling block that I cant seem to get around.
Using the NotePad example, I have created my own ContentProvider to serve up data from a database that I will eventually host on a webserver. But that is lightyears away from where I am right now.
Just testing my ContentProvider has caused a bit of a headache that I cant solve. For some reason, when the provider calls SQLiteDatabase db = mOpenHelper.getWritableDatabase(); I get a null pointer exception.
Code Follows:
