Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for the help. What I'm trying to do is a relatively simple task, but one that doesn't seem to be working. What I'm trying to do is display the Orientation X,Y,Z coordinates on the screen in basic TextView boxes. The sensors are constantly updating my Global.myOrientation float array, and then I'm running a Timed thread (I'm very new to threading, so forgive me if it's ugly, but it gets the job done almost). In this thread I just set the value of each TextView's text to the desired value. The problem is that it only seems to work the first time.
It correctly displays whatever my initial data is, but then subsequent runs of the thread do nothign to update the onscreen values when I change the orientation of the phone. LogCat output shows me that inside the run() method, the values of Global.getOrientationX,Y,Z are being updated correctly, and that the right data is being passed to TextView. How can I get around this limitation of TextView being initialized once and then immutable?
Any assistance in fixing this, or providing an alternate solution would be greatly appreciated. Code posted below:
CODE:...............

I have an app that uses a TabHost. Several of the Tabs share a common HUD. I am using a service to periodically update those values by calling an AIDL function when ready.
However, since several of the Tabs are using the same HUD I would like to abstract that part out.
I thought about having the HUD.xml use a String resource as it's value and then the abstracted class can update the String resource. However, apparently Android can not update String resources programatically.
The only alternative solution I see would be using SharedPreference.
I have concerns accessing a Database everytime the value is refreshed.

However the screen doesn't update. I must be overlooking something...

Whenever I am using any app and press the home button, the home screen blacks out for a few secs and it takes around 10 sec to get all the icons back and before I can start using my phone again. I am using a non rooted mytouch 3g.
This problem does not happen if I exit an app by pressing the back button. It becomes very annoying at times.

I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels.Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?

I have built a simple app that uses a Google MapActivity. On top of the Map, I have 2 overlays, a Marathon Course and the position of a runner. The latter position overlay simply shows an updated blue dot.I update the location of the dot every second but the screen does not refresh. If I tap the scrren then the dot updates. Am I missing some hard refresh call somewhere? My Overlay code is small and shown below. Note that it does go into the draw routine every second and the point is changed.

I am making a clock widget for the android home screen using AppWidgetProvider. I have it calling the TImerTask class that updates all my values using this code:
@Override
public void onUpdate(Context context, AppWidgetManager appWidgetManager, int[] appWidgetIds {
Timer timer = new Timer();
timer.scheduleAtFixedRate(new MyTime(context, appWidgetManager), 1, 1000);
}
In the TimerTasks run() I am setting a bunch of text views to the relevant values. My problem is that this seems to work fine, but it makes my home screen unresponsive, probably due to updating it every second. How do I fix this and still have it update the display at the correct time? (I only need to see minutes not seconds, but I want the minutes to change at the correct second.)

I'm using textview objects to hold labels such as Score, Level etc on my game screen but they don't seem to be displayed where I want them to be. I understand about view hierarchies (parents, children) and am using the gravity tags in the XML layout file but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Could someone just quickly provide a guide to positioning a textview object on the screen, and also linking it in the code so that its contents can be pro grammatically controlled (I believe this would by done via =(TextView) findViewById(r.id.resourcename))? Code...

I've a textview I want to span almost the length of the screen, then 2 buttons at the bottom.
Right now I'm using a relative layout with a textview and two buttons and I can almost get it the way I want but the only thing is the textview isn't as long as I want it. I want it to be as long as necessary for whatever handset is using it. So a constant pixel amount is out.

I have an Android TextView where the view itself is limited to four lines.If the text exceeds this limit I want the end of the view to end with something like.<-- to notify that there is more text here so you can click and open in full screen for example.Not just suddenly stop in the middle of a sentence. Is there a quick fix for this?

I noticed that it is not possible to specify a percentage value for maxWidth.
What is the best way around this?
For example, in the layout xml, is it possible to get a handle on the screen width and apply some kind of arithmetic to it (e.g. maxWidth="(60 * @screenWidth) / 100px")
Also would this approach mean the maxWidth would be automatically recalculated on orientation changes?

I am developing an application in which the layout is independent of screen resolution.
Now my problem is that in TextView the textview layout does change itself when the resolution of screen changes but the size of text remain same.I want that when the resolution is high, according to that the text size should also adjust itself(i.e. text size should be changed).And similarly when resolution is low the text size should also shrink.But here when i reduce Y-AXIS to an extent the text vanishes.I will really appreciate any answer.

From Android widget screen guidelines,we know that, home screen has 4*4 cells, and in portrait orientation, each cell is 80 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. I think these are for baseline HVGA screen. How about for large screens and hdpi screens, do they still have 4*4 cells for widget and each cell in portrait orientation is still 80 pixels * 100 pixels?

Two things I'd like to be able to do with my incredible.First is reduce the number of homescreens. Seven is really pointless for me, it makes finding the right screen take a little longer and there's just not enough good quality widgets that I need to use. I could do better with 5 and possibly just 3.Second is that when I'm not on a homescreen and I hit the home button, I'd like it to go back to the LAST homescreen I was on, not the center one. And if I'm already on a homescreen, once again pull up the homescreen select menu, instead of going to the center homescreen. It's a waste of a button press to always go to that center screen when pressing the home button.

This is more of an annoyance, but whenever I reply to a message off the home screen widget, it automatically defaults to the home number for that contact, instead of replying to the same (cell) number that it was sent from. If I go into the messaging app, it works as it should (replies to the same number).
