Android :: Update Integrated Progress Bar In Original Activity
Jul 29, 2009
I've been trying to get my progress bar view to work in my file scanner application, and I'm thoroughly stumped by the proper combination of Activities, Services, Threads, and Handlers. Here's the structure: My Activity contains a Horizontal-styled ProgressBar. On menu item click, I spawn a Service which, onCreate(), which is where I want to be able to update the progress bar. what am I missing?.............

this is the current state/situation: I have an Activity which binds a Service which creates AsyncTasks which downloads various web resources. That works well, but of course the ProgressBar shows nothing. Previously i had an Activity which created an AsyncTask which downloaded some stuff. The AsyncTask got the View which holds the ProgressBar. So i could update the progress using onProgressUpdate and publishProgress. Obviously this doesn't work any longer because I have no reference to the ProgressBar.

I have an application with contains multiple activities. The main activity will start the others ( use startActivity() ) depends on user event, when an activity close, it calls finish() and return back to main activity. It appears to behavior like that.
However, the "problem" I see is main activity's onCreate function is called every time. I think the the main activity should be placed in the activity stack and simply push to front when others exit, therefore only onResume, onStart are called. Is there some flag I need to set or I misunderstand the activity behaviro?
In child activity, besides calling finish() or startActivity for main activity, what is other way to move main activity to front?

My application involves doing some calculation on the first activity and sending the information to the second activity. So while the calculation is being done , I want to show a activity / progress / busy indicator on the first activity , before going to the second one. Is there any way of doing so, or an sample code that does the same. I was also looking out for the same by calling the calculation method after a delay so that the progress bar is shown first before the calculation is done , but this has also failed.

I have a service that downloads something from the Internet, it shows progress in notifications and in MyActivity (only when MyActivity is on foreground of course). How should the service post the progress to MyActivity? I know this could be done somehow with IBind but can I just simply do this in MyActivity:
MySevice.myActivity = this; startService(new Intent(....));
From MyService I can now call MyActivity's methods because I have a static reference to it in MySevice.myActivity, so I can call e.g. myActivity.sendProgress(63).

this button is shown on my start activity. After pressing it a new activity will be launched but this takes some time cause on initialization of that new activity some data is gathered from the Internet. This works half. The progress dialoge is shown but the progress wheel is not spinning.
Can somebody tell me why this happens?
Button b4 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.Button01);
b4.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick (View view) {

I'm looking for a way to resume my activity (which makes phone call) after call ends by user. Currently after user ends a call, it always returns to the phone's native call-log screen instead of the activity that originated the call. Is there any way to prevent or customize this?

I encounter a problem with a ProgressDialog in a PreferencesActivity in my application.What I want to do is pop up a ProgressDialog after the user has changed his username or password during the check on the remote server. In the onSharedPreferenceChanged() I call the ProgressDialog.show() method. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes not at all.

I am trying to update TextView in my Activity with text messages from DatagramServer ( see below) The problem I have is that "backgound UDP server receives plenty of traffic, but onProgessUpdate is ever executed only once so only the first of the messages appear in the TextView.
public class MyActivity extends Activity {
TextView txtStatus; // txtStatus initialized
new BackgroundAsyncTask().execute();
public class BackgroundAsyncTask extends
AsyncTask<Void, String, Void> {
public static final String SERVERIP = "127.0.0.1";
// 'Within' the emulator! public static final int SERVERPORT = 2222;
private DatagramSocket socket;
protected Void doInBackground(Void... params) {
try { InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName(SERVERIP);
Log.d("UDP", "S: Waiting for connection...");
socket = new DatagramSocket(SERVERPORT, serverAddr);
while(true) { byte[] buf = new byte[1024];
DatagramPacket packet = new DatagramPacket(buf, buf.length);
Log.i("telemetry server", " waiting for packet");
socket.receive(packet);
Log.i("received", new Integer(packet.getLength()).toString());
Log.i("UDPServer received:", new String(packet.getData()));
publishProgress(new String(packet.getData()));
} } catch (Exception e) { Log.i("Dbg server", e.getMessage());

I would like to know if it is possible to get 'leftover' calls to AsyncTask#onProgressUpdate after AsyncTask#onPostExecute has been called? I am setting text on the same TextView using both of them, and I don't want to set text such as "Done!" and then have it overwritten at a later point by text such as "Almost there - 90%"Also, I am assuming that the onProgressUpdate method works similar to a SwingWorker method in that multiple calls to publishProgress may stack up before a call to onProgressUpdate occurs. I would really like to know where the "newer" and "older" progress updates are on the parameter - aka are the newest updates at position 0 in the parameter, or at position progress.length?

Maybe quite a lot of SGSers are dying to know how the Froyo update progresses across the globe. I know about Sweden and Norway so far. Please let us know if the update appears in KIES in your country. It would be a nice extra if you'd publish your product code too.

I currently have a tab layout with 2 tabs, one tab with a list view and one with the option make strings so I can add them in the list view. Both tabs have their own activity because this made the code much more structured, and I dont have to repeat my self later.
Lets say im in the tab that offer me to create an string, and i press the update list button, how do I update the list view without startActivity()? If i use startActivity(), it starts List.java, and instead of displaying the list in the list view tab, it takes full screen, which defies the purpose of the tab view. In other words, the startActivity() steals the focus from the tab view of the list, and sends it fulscreen.
I want to update the activity in my list view tab, without starting a new activity that goes to fullscreen, and doesnt update the one in the tab.

I have an Android activity that, onCreate(), will query a database and display the query results in textviews on the UI.The problem that I am having is at some point, users can open another activity and update the database. When they go back to the original activity, I would like for the text views to update with the new database information (so, I will re query the database and display the info).Another thing that I am willing to do is to take the new input from the user (in the new activity) and directly update the textview in the existing activity (without having the existing activity re-query the database). But I'm not sure how to do something like that either.Can someone please inform me on the best way to go about doing this? The only solution that I have found so far has to do with broadcast receivers, but I'm not sure if that is best suited for what I have to do.

Having a little trouble with my music/podcast management, primarily because of my Bluetooth connections. I have the stock music app for my music, and then Doggcatcher for my podcasts. Unfortunately, this causes confusion when I am pausing and playing via Bluetooth - both apps will start playing, or one app will play and the other will pause...
It would be mostly solved if Android would give priority to the focused application when responding to Bluetooth commands (so I could just open the app I want and then it would act normally), but unfortunately, such is not the case.
Is there any kind of good music app out there that does good podcast management? I don't need much, just the ability to download podcasts on demand, and remember how much of the podcast I've listened to.
Suggestions? DoubleTwist claims to do this, but I have to connect to the computer to sync, which I think is friggin' stupid. I just want to be able to do everything OTA.

I am trying to figure out what is the best way to debug a mix of Java and native code? Please notice, that I am NOT trying to develop a native app. The app will be written entirely in Java, using Android SDK. However, I noticed that some pieces of the SDK use native methods (e.g. AssetManager, WebKit, etc). I wonder which tools Google developers use if/when they need to debug a mix of Java and C/C++ code? Eclipse/gdb or there are commercial tools which make the debugging experience less painful?

I am working on developing an app and I am not sure when should I use a new activity and when should I update the existing view.
For example, lets say I have a view that shows a multiple choice question.Now, when the user selects his choices and clicks on say "Evaluate", I want to show the same question view but along with the right answers and explanations for each option. So does that mean, I should send an Intent upon a click on Evaluate or I should just update the view (i am not sure how)?
If I send an intent and show a new screen, how can the user go back to the next question without displaying the answers? If I don't create an new activity, how can I update the existing view that is already displayed?
