Android : Unable To Retrieve Current Network Type

Ive been trying to retrieve the current network type, but no success when i say network type: i refer to know this info:
if the type is: NETWORK_TYPE_IDEN or NETWORK_TYPE_UMTS.. and so on. i tried to use: NetworkInfo activeNetInfo = connectivityManager.getActiveNetworkInfo();NetworkInfo bonneting = connectivity Manager.getNetworkInfo i am doing this coz i wanna know if the current network is IDEN, or if the current network is connected through wifi any other suggestions will be welcome.

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .
I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.
If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.
There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int,int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?
Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

Is there any way to retrieve the data type of a contact's photo? (e.g. "image/png" or "image/jpeg"). Using the Contacts Provider I can read the photo byte array only. In this case can we get the image type from the image stream?

How can I detect if the G1 keyboard is hidden or open at application startup? My app always runs in landscape mode, but I can only find how to detect keyboard configuration *changes* (through onConfigurationChanged()). I'd like to use an existing sqlite3 database created outside of the phone, on a computer reachable by Wifi. I know how to download the file using Socket. The problem I see is that android.database.sqlite classes access databases only in /data/data/<package_name>/databases and it does not seem to be possible to write files directly in there. Is there a way to write a file in /data/data/<package_name>/ databases or ask the android.database.sqlite classes to read a database from another place?

I've had a problem with my Google Calendars displaying correctly, so I went into all the Calendar settings, and cleared the data, in a hope of syncing them from scratch. However..... Now I am unable to retrieve the calendars from Google. The only ones that show up in the Calendar list are: -

I'm trying to use google maps on my android app but when i extend MapActivity instead of Activity in my activity file, there is an error that MapActivity cannot be resolved to a type...? I have <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"/> as a child of manifest and <uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" /> as a child of application too.....
Moreover, when i try to import com.google,android.maps.MapActivity, it says com.google cannot be resolved....

I have an activity that needs to display an alert to user when location is updated,
but i need first to get current location (update last known location) and then start a location update listener to display alert in this activity.
Basically what i need is to display an alert if location changed from time activity was created.
If i use getLastKnownLocation when activity is created, it might be outdated, then the requestLocationUpdate listener is called a few seconds from activity creation time.
How can i do this?

I moved to shape writer and I haven't looked back. when I have to tap-type in certain words that aren't in the SW dictionary yet, its a pain in the @ss. I talked a couple other people into "swyping" instead of tapping and they fought at first, now they two can't stand tap typing anymore.

I would like to have the cell network type displayed while I am connected to WiFi in the status bar signal cluster. Currently, once you connect to WiFi, the LTE, H, E, etc, go away; I'd like them to stay.
I can move the WiFi icon over to make room for the type icon (LTE, H, E, etc) just by deleting "android:layout_marginRight="-6.0dip"" at the end of the "id/wifi_combo" line in res/layout/signal_cluster_view.xml in SystemUI.apk.
Where is the function that turns off that cell type icon when WiFi is connected in SystemUI.apk? I know the system can detect the type of network whilst WiFi is connected, it's just a matter for forcing that icon to stay displayed.
I am trying this on Cyanogenmod 11.

I am using SonyEricsson X10i phone. I have developend an application that just shows the current location of a user. Now the problem is When i turn on my application it just keep searching. It is not showing anything. Even if i try to use built in navigation system it does not work. I have turned on GPS receiver. My firmware version is 1.6 and kernel version is 2.6. I am not sure but i came to know from some resource that 1.6 firmware does not support GPS. Let me know if someone knows the solution.

Whenever I type online whether its attempting to compose a myspace response or a general response on a message board like this, I experience annoying lag. I'm sure I'm not the only one, at least I hope I'm not, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't like that in the beginning. My question is, is this a network type thing? Or is it a memory/space type thing. I'm 90% on the wifi, and I would hope its a network thing because the lag online is becoming really annoying.

Anywho, I want to go into Gmail, compose a new email, and be able to select contacts (or even have the app provide a look-ahead list based on what I type). This is exactly how the Gmail app for my Blackberry 8830 worked so I don't understand why there seems to be less functionality no an Android phone. In any case, it seems that no matter what, all I can do is manually type in email addresses. Also, I know I can go into Contacts (People) and select a person's email. This brings up a menu option to email using Gmail or my Exchange email account. This in't good enough because all I can do is open a new email to one person this way. What if I want to email 10 people!?

I am trying to create an Android maps project. Everything was working fine until i added Salesforce classes into it. Now it doesn't even compile. It gives me: Type Conversion to Dalvik format failed: Unable to execute dex: null error.
I tried 1) Increasing memory in the .ini file. That didn't help. 2) Project -> Clean option. It cleans, builds again and then gives me the same error.
I am using Snow Leopard and i have the latest version of Android on my system. I just installed it last week. Plus, my eclipse is Ganymede. I even tried it with Galileo.

I have an HTC incredible and have tried everything to put music on it, the most recent program i am using is tunesync, which works great. However, whenever i transfer music i always get the message "unable to play this type of audio file" I have tried everything from making the files all mp3 format to using different programs to do the sync, but nothing will work.

I am no longer able to bring up the 4 choice usb-type menu that pops up when the usb cable is connected between the phone and my pc. Now after about a second delay the battery icon changes to the charging icon and the red LED lights up.
I have Disk Drive set as default with the "Ask Me" box checked (regarding USB connection type). The cable I have been using before and now is the one marked DICMUSB that came with the phone and plugs into the htc usb converter for drawing power from the wall. My pc also does not recognize the phones internal storage or pop up an error message.
I have not had this issue before, as I have been able to move mp3's from disk to phone-sdcard as well as change the boot animation. I thought maybe an app was causing the issue, but after uninstalling everything back to when I last hooked up the phone to my pc the problem still exists.
