Android : Thread Stopping In Synchronized Block / Create A New Socket?
Jan 9, 2010
I am facing a problem with a stopping thread which is in a synchronized block. I am using TCP socket. The problem is that I am waiting on a DataInputStream object and I want to create a new socket again but it doesn't allow me to do because of the synchronized block.
I have tried with Thread.interrupted(). I cannot avoid the synchronized block. Is there any other way to do the same?
dis = new DataInputStream(ReadWriteData.kkSocket.getInputStream());
int i = -1;
String aval = ""; //new String();
char c = (char)dis.read();
It is getting blocked on dis.read().
What I should do for escaping the dis.read when I want to create a new socket?

What is the efficient way of blocking on the socket for data after opening it.The method i used is to call read on input stream (this is a blocking call that waits till some data written to this socket).
//Socket creation
SocketForCommunication = new Socket();
InetSocketAddress sAddr = new InetSocketAddress("hostName", 8800);
SocketForCommunication.connect(sAddr,10000);
is = new DataInputStream(SocketForCommunication.getInputStream());
os = new DataOutputStream(SocketForCommunication.getOutputStream());
//Waiting on socket using read method for data
while(true)
{
int data = is.read();
if(data == HEADER_START)
{
processPackage(is);}}
Here problem is read can timeout.Is there a way to register a callback that gets called when data available to read on socket.?

My appWidget is working well. When it's installed and used by user, a Thread is launched to refresh view (like a flipper). Even if the screen is off, the thread is continuing...perfect for me... But after 3 minutes, it's stopped.
Does it a VM restriction avoiding some bad development usage?
How can I use this type of service? Develop a service in place of my thread?

My service spawns a new thread, and stops it according to the typically recommended java method of interrupt()'ing. When I stop the service, I stop the thread in onDestroy(). The service is stopped, and the interrupt code is reached. However, soon enough the thread restarts from the beginning of the Runnable.code...

First off, let me say that feel free to recommend me if long lived TCP persistent connections are the way to go or persistent HTTP connections are better.
I've also pre-read that instead of having a persistent connection, I can have a polling mechanism.
I'm just asking in the curious interest of how can I create a persistent connection from Android to a server?

We have a simple client server architecture between our mobile device and our server both written in Java. An extremely simple ServerSocket and Socket implementation. However one problem is that when the client terminates abruptly (without closing the socket properly) the server does not know that it is disconnected. Furthermore, the server can continue to write to this socket without getting any exceptions. Why? According to documentation Java sockets should throw exceptions if you try to write to a socket that is not reachable on the other end!

Essentially Im trying to get many many java clients connect to a socket on my ColdFusion server (Using the Socket Gateway). However before i even start to code this, Im a little confused about sockets and their performance. First of all, are sockets meant for many(1000+) clients connecting to one socket (say port 2202) on one server? How is the performance if all there waiting for is basically a ping, or something such that when these clients receive this "ping" they can go get some new data.

I am writing an Android app that should exchange data to a server over Bluetooth, with the server side on a PC running Ubuntu, using the bluez library, in C (or C++).
My Android app fails (IOException) when I try to connect to my server socket on the PC.
Here is essentially what I in the java code (in Android, full eclipse project here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2968234/ThinBTClient.zip)
CODE:...........
This throws IOException after a timeout of 10seconds or so.
On the server side (in Ubuntu 8.10), I basically set up a Bluetooth server socket, along the lines described in the example bluez/sdp-register.c
Down below is my C++ program. To compile it do
g++ -I/usr/include/glib-2.0/ -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -o bt_server bt_server.cpp -lbluetooth
I can do the reverse succesfully, i.e. create a server socket in Android and connect from Linux, however this is not what I want to do!
I think either the problem has to do with my config of Ubuntu.
CODE:................

how to develop an offline sync app using the OpenMobster Sync Plugin for the PhoneGap framework. You can develop your App using HTML5 and Javascript instead of the native programming language.
Features:
-two way synchronization between the local sqlite database and the corporate backend in the Cloud
-Offline mode operation. All data changes are tracked and auto synchronized with the Cloud once the connection returns
-Use of Push notifications to push data changes from the Cloud to the device
-Support for replicating changes to multiple devices like iCloud does
-A Java based Channel Framework for integrating your backend with the Cloud

I am writing an application in which i need to handle messages between the main thread(the deafult UI related thread) and the user created Gamethread.
The requirement is like this.
An activity(say "Activity_X") is setting the view by "setContentView(some "View_Y")". In "Activity_X" i have implemeted "onCreateOptionsMenu()" and "onOptionsItemSelected()" fucntions for creating menus & a switch case for action to be taken on selecting those menus.Menu has items like "resume/pause/zoom/" .
All action to be take on selecting these menus are implemented in "View_Y" in a separate Gamethread by extending "Thread" class.
So whenever a menu is selected in "Activity_X" i need to send a message to "View_Y". And on receiving this ,a particular action/method should be called in View_Y(GameThread).
How can i achieve this using Handlers?Is there any other way of doing this? Please do share with me some code snippets for these.

im using 2 threads, one is writing floats and one is reading this floats permanently. my question is, what could happen worse when i dont synchronize them? it would be no problem if some of the values would not be correct because they switch just a little every write operation. im running the application this way at the moment and dont have any problems so i want to know what could happen worse?
a read/write conflict would cause a number like 12345 which is written to 54321 and red at the same time appear for example as 54345 ? or could happen something worse?
(i dont want to use synchronization to keep the code as fast as possible)

Pretty pissed off by the youtube app in X10.
Sound is always late by about 0.3s.
Its a real turn off to see the mouth move first, then hear the sound.
Is there any other apps which I can watch youtube in high quality, without facing this sound problem?
Or is there another better apps out there?

I use a boolean variable "flag" both in main and child thread. This "flag" is used to notify child thread to exit. I only use simple operation, e.g., "flag=false", "if (flag) {}". As I know, in java, "get and set a boolean variable" is atomic. So "synchronized" is not needed for variable "flag", declaring "flag" as "volatile" is enough.
Is this still true in Android?
