Android :: Setting Up Android Application For Analytics And Tracking

May 19, 2010

Tracking events and setting up Analytics for Websites seems easy. You create an account with one of the Analytics service providers like Google. They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done.

I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application.

Question:

How to do setup a native application for Analytics? We have Java Script code(not Google Analytics but for some other engine) that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews, it is native!

I have not worked on JavaScript since school so excuse me if I sound naive.

Android :: Looking For Flight Tracking Application

Nov 23, 2010

All new to this forum and just got my first android phone over the weekend which I'm really excited about and so far love every minute of it. The reason for this posting is because I'm looking for a certain application. I know there are many flight tracker apps out there but I seem to remember hearing about on app which you could just point your phone at a specific airplane it would give you information about where it originated and where it was headed, it was great because you didn't have to enter any information and you could track random flights that you saw going overhead.

Android :: Need Mileage Tracking Application For GPS Locations

Nov 20, 2010

I'm looking for a Mileage Tracker App, if anyone knows of one. I plan on driving from location to location frequently throughout my work day, and I'd like to be able to save time on keeping track of my mileage by having an app that does it for me. What I'm looking for is to be able to get in my car, have the GPS on, open the app and press start. From there, I want the GPS to track my location, just like it would do for navigation. When I get to my destination, I want to be able press stop and have it tell me (and log on a daily, weekly, or monthly page) the mileage for each trip.

i.e.
11/20/10 3:35pm - 3:50pm 10.3 mi [View Map]
11/20/10 5:22pm - 5:45pm 24.6 mi [View Map] <--- Button to press to view map
I'd also like for it to record the path I took on a map (as seen above), so that I can easily identify where I am driving to and from, when trying to fill out a mileage sheet.

Android :: Tracking Traffic Patterns / Driving Route Application

Jun 16, 2009

I'm wondering if there's an app out there that can track traffic patterns/route times. I know that those Runners apps. can track speed/time to destination, but I'm interested in being able to track which highways/roads have the most/least amounts of traffic on which days and at which times, or which roads cause you to wait the longest at certain lights, so that I can know in advance (the app. would alert me which route to take on which day according to data collected over time). I've always been kind of fascinated by traffic patterns, but I'm also a fairly focused driver, so I don't generally look at times it has taken me on different days. You can feel like taking a back way one day, but does it really save you any time with all the lights you hit instead?

Android :: Google Analytics - Starting The Tracker

Jun 18, 2010

Do not start the GoogleAnalyticsTracker in your Application onCreate() method if using referral tracking.

Well, of course I'd like to use referral tracking. It would be my whole reason to use Google Analytics instead of a more full featured analytics.

But what does this mean exactly?

Does it mean: Start the tracker somewhere else? (where? onStart) Don't start it at all - it will get started for you? You can't use a tracker if you are using referral tracking?

Has anybody used referral tracking so they can give me some tips?

Android :: Google Analytics Install Referrer Issue

Nov 1, 2010

I needed to track install information, so i used com.android.vending.INSTALL_REFERRER intent for google analytics: http://code.google.com/mobile/analytics/docs/android/

I have put that intent into manifest as following:

<receiver android:name="com.mycompany.MyReceiver" android:exported="true"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="com.android.vending.INSTALL_REFERRER" /> </intent-filter> </receiver>

Inside MyReceiver class, i've implemented:

public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) { String referrer = URLDecoder.decode(intent.getStringExtra("referrer")) Log.d(TAG, referrer); com.google.android.apps.analytics.AnalyticsReceiver receiver = new com.google.android.apps.analytics.AnalyticsReceiver(); receiver.onReceive(context, intent);}

Then i installed app using generated at http://code.google.com/mobile/analytics/docs/android/#android-market-... url, and got this in log:

DEBUG/TestApplication(31977): utm_source=androidmarket&utm_medium=device&utm_campaign=search&utm_term=pname:com.mycompany.test.market&rowindex=0&hl=en&correctedQuery= WARN/googleanalytics(31532): Badly formatted referrer missing campaign, name or source WARN/googleanalytics(31532): Badly formatted referrer, ignored

So, instead of referral data that was given at url generation, i've got data which looks like i was searching for my app at Market

Does anyone have this kind of trouble, or knows how to help?

Android :: Setting Preferred Home Activity From Application Code

Jan 7, 2010

I'm trying to have my home-screen application register itself as the default home-screen so the user is not prompted with the IntentResolver's list of all the available home-activities.

This is my code:

CODE:.................

I have the android.permission.SET_PREFERRED_APPLICATIONS set in the manifest. After executing the code above, the logs claim things have been added like expected (same logs as when I tick off "Make default" from IntentResolver's list). However, when I proceed by clicking home, the list still shows up and the logs say:

CODE:.....................

So it seems the resolver deletes the default entry. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a security measure? What are the ideas behind this?

Android :: Licensing - Setting Server Response Values Per Application

Aug 5, 2010

So I've just published my first paid app to the Market and I used the new LVL with the default ServerManagedPolicy. On working through the docs and getting it set up I noted the references to the server response extras VT, GT, GR & UT, and the impression I got from quotes such as "a typical value would be 5 or more days.", "a typical value would be "10" or higher." etc., was that we would have some way of setting these server response values per app when we upload them to the Market. Either I'm missing something, or there does not seem to be a way to set these in the Developer Console that I can see? If we can't set these, it's not really a 'managed' policy at all, but a random 'whatever the server decides to respond with' policy, particularly given the vagueness of the documentation.

I really hate phone home licensing, and am only using it because it seems to be the only option to combat Android piracy. Ideally I want to just check once when the app is first launched, once a day or two later to check they didn't return it, then cache that for 6 months (forever?) to minimize disruption to my users. Is this kind of thing possible with the ServerManagedPolicy or do I have the wrong end of the stick about the 'management' features and have to roll my own? On a side note, if I can't buy my own app, how can I test my licensing is working in the wild? I got several 'NOT_LICENSED' responses in testing even when I set it to return 'LICENSED' in the console, so I'm not 100% convinced of its stability and want to actually see how well it works outside the testing environment, but apparently can't buy my own app to do so!
