Has anyone else used the Safe NeighborHood App? It lets you do a sexual predator search based on current location or you can search an address. I use it randomly while I travel, sometimes it's downright scary.

I am not sure if it is safe to assume there is only one instance of the Application in one application. Apparently, the Application class in Android SDK doesn't provide such method to return the instance reference. So I suspect there must be a reason?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use a single static class in my code that defines a static field which I'm reusing between Activity onStop/onStart invocations. Here's a scenario:
User clicks on "Authorize" button (static data is initialized) Activity is stopped and web browser is called
Browser executes callback and Activity is restored (static data is reused)
At least one of my users reports the failure at step 3 which I cannot reproduce but which looks like reset of static data.
This procedure can clear a large number of problems and should be tried before a Hard Reset.
1.) Turn phone off remove battery WAIT for at least two minutes.
2.) Power On Phone while Holding MENU key Until ALL actions finish from Powering on phone At the bottom left corner of the display in transparent text will be the words "Safe Mode"
3.) Power off phone again battery out wait two minutes
4.) do a normal power on
i just got the 2.1 update this morning and was cleaning up a few unused apps and i came across launcher. I couldn't believe I still had it on here (been using sweeterhome) and so i remembered i had to go into safe mode to remove it. Tried to get into safe mode no luck. thought, ok, i'm missing a step or something. looked up the directions to make sure i was doing each step correctly and still nothing! i've held the power button and the menu button (keyboard) down at the same time until i saw the eye, until after the haptic then major vibration. i tried holding the menu and power, then releasing the power while still holding menu until both things i just stated and still nothing! what is happening is after I hold the buttons until after the vibration one of two things happens,it will go back to the screen that spells out droid then the eye or it will load normally, no safe mode on the screen. i read somewhere doing a google search that someone else had this same experience and asked for help and no one replied.

The reason I ask is because i'll be using it to tether to my laptop. When installing on the laptop...certificate warnings pop up.. the same when installing on droid. (USB debugging warning comes up saying it has to be turned off) which basically means data can be transferred wherever.

Or is there a better more standard way to get it? I'm using the literal string "System Group: My Contacts" when I query the Groups table to get the source row for the My Contacts group. I found this constant by poking around in the debugger, but It's not documented anywhere that I could find, so I don't know if it's the right thing to use. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to let the user take a picture using the camera, then use it in my app. Ideally I could use the built-in camera app via an intent for this.is the only reliable option to use the 192x256 memory-only image supplied by the camera intent? The following seems to not work:
1) Asking the camera intent to write a 'full size' image to disk.
2) Writing your own camera app (issues on different devices etc).
The Facebook app seems to use the memory-only 192x256 option, probably because that's the only safe option. Anyone else have different opinions / experiences?

I write Android apps, distributed via the Market. A user has written asking whether they can have the raw .apk of one app (they're in a country where the Market isn't available).

I ran a little test on the emulator, and I'm seeing exceptions in the device logs that *.bak versions of the preference files cannot be written. Not sure how critical that is. Curiously, safing settings still seems to work, even though the shared_prefs folder had been created using another Linux user ID.Did anyone try this before?

Let me give you the scenario.
Say that my first Activity that loads up, also creates a thread, which will run indefinitely in the background.
Now, if I move to another Activity, I assume that the thread that I initially created in the main activity will continue to run.
So, now to my main question - in order to manage this background thread from other Activities, is it safe to store a reference to that thread in a singleton object?
Suppose my activity ui-thread spawns a separate thread at some point. Is it safe for that new thread to fire off an Intent for launching a new activity?

Each time I want to install the new version of the app on the device I need to connect it, enable USB Debugging, install the app, disable USB Debugging, unplug the device (optional). I was wondering if it was safe to just unplug the device without disabling USB Debugging. After all, the device is not mounted, right? But there is the adb, talking to it. It would be much more convenient to be able to do that. Does anyone know if it is safe or unsafe?
