I don't get it? I've never had a phone make such a pain until I got my Hero. In fact, it's never been a feature in any phone I've had until the Hero. So what's the big deal? Why bother including it if it doesn't do anything useful?

Here's a question that comes from an unclear view of how things work : can a a phone be data roaming without being voice roaming? If so how can a begin data roaming event can be detected? This question came to me from the DDMS options , where one can have" data roaming " and "home voice".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an application which is making a web request every 10s using HttpURLConnection. When the application starts in 3G, it works great. Then I activate Wifi and after that, all my requests fail during exactly 10 minutes with the fallowing exception : Socket is not connected. The behavior is the same if I start in Wifi and then I switch to 3G. What's the problem here ? Do we need to setup something at socket level ? a timeout (10 minutes is the default one) ?

Being in Singapore, all travel is international hence data roaming charges apply.Every time I travel, I go through a laborious process to reset my wireless / sync / settings.I am hunting for a 'Data Roaming Manager' app where I can define profiles with associated wireless / sync settings. I could define a profile that specifies the settings I described above. After I define the profile once, every time I travel, I just need to toggle the settings on/off. A key need is that this app should cover all possible wireless / sync / download settings. Anything that impacts data download/upload.I don't have the necessary skills to create an app like this but am willing to work with someone who does. I am reasonable sure that people would be willing to pay for such an app at the right price.

I hope for the best having limited my traffic as much as possible, but I want to know in advance. I used the very nice app NetCounter but it didn't measure roaming data traffic at all.So I want to build my own app measuring just roaming data traffic. I have a few booleans to start with ( NetworkInfo.IsRoaming() & TelephonyManager. isNetworkRoaming() ), but I'm not sure how to measure the traffic if true.So the question is: How do I measure data traffic while roaming? (Something like API level 8 TrafficStats functionality is what I'm after, but for API level 3). The used SmartPhone is Samsung Galaxy i7500 (Android 1.6)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to adjust some settings to disable/enable data roaming and switch GSM/AUTO mode as the functions provided by Settings.apk(Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> "Data roaming"/"Use only 2G networks").
I know there is a way to get the current setting of data roaming through the api android.provider.Settings.Secure.DATA_ROAMING. But I don't know if I could change here to control the usage of Data roaming. If it is nothing but the status of data roaming. Changing here will cause the state of the system inconsistent.
Although I could find the api related to Data roaming, I can't find any thing about switching GSM/AUTO mode except for some internal api.
BTW, before this discussion I has posted an old related discussion, but I can't find it from the groups. Does this mean the system miss the discussion I posted?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have an iPhone 5S, SGS4 and HTC One and share a single sim card between all three phones.
In my home country my SIM card is able to access data on all 3 phones with no problem.
However, when I go abroad and use data roaming, only the iPhone is able connect, both android phones are unable to connect at all.
I checked the APN settings and all seem to be correct.
I'm doing a bit of international travel next week. Just got off the phone with VZW. The woman on the other end of the line told me that, even when internationally roaming, calls are free. Not free except for data. As in you don't get charged. Even over 3G (since it doesn't work over WiFi). I don't think that she was right. Can anyone confirm this? I would have much less trouble believing this if Skype were enabled with WiFi.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am looking for information regarding international roaming charges. For informational purposes I am using the Samsung Vibrant. I want to know if I turn off the "Data while Roaming" feature and put my phone into Airplane mode will I still be charged if I check my email and surf the web only when connected to a WiFI network. I am getting mixed responses from customer service whether or not I can bypass international roaming charges by doing this. I'm pretty sure I won't be charged when using my phone over wifi but I just wanted to make sure.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm encountering very poor roaming performance. When my device switch from 3G to Wifi and vice versa, my application can't connect to the INTERNET for about 10 minutes. The given error is connection timeout: socket is not connected. I've already posted a similar problem here: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa... But I've noticed that it's not related to HttpUrlConnection. I've tried Apache Api to make my connections and the result is the same. Am I the only one facing this problem ? Could it be a platform bug?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI normally live in Houston so I obviously have service there but I go to Texas Tech in Lubbock where this used to be alltel. Now the weird thing is that both the voice and text network (a.k.a the one with no signal next to the bars on the droid) as well as 1X national access, is full Verizon now. However, my 3g is still considered extended network!! ( I know this because if I set my phone to home only I lose 3g or if I put it to evdo only my tag changes to extended network) I know that Verizon said that no updates would go to you if you are roaming so I am kind of stuck as to what to expect about getting it, since I am half roaming lol. I have had the phone on wifi as much as I can but nothing yet. I wondered though if you do it on wifi wouldn't that come out really late since wifi does not connect to the network so wont Verizon have to post it somewhere on a server for the phone to find? I still do not understand where the update goes if you use wifi and how your phone knows to look for it. Also i never got the original OTA for 2.0.1 and waited five days before downloading the file but I would like the OTA if possible. Just mainly wanting to know if anyone thinks it is going to work?

If it's in roaming then the application should block internet for all applications except several from white list. In non-roaming mode it should allow all requests. There should be no way for user to kill or suspend the application or turn internet on.
I'm not familiar with android much so I really don't know whether it possible to implement without modification of OS. Is there any way to do this?
I'm coming from a sluggish Touch Pro 2. I was used to using a program to force roaming and I know most of Sprints phones sold nowadays no longer offer this option. I dont know much about the hacks or apps for the Android platform yet but was wondering if anyone knew of a roaming app to "force roaming". I live in a area where I get 1-2 bars and miss calls all the time. Barely ever home (work) so its not a deal breaker but it would help if I could. I'm aware of Sprints rules on roaming, (cant be too excessive). FYI
I also tried ##3282# and entered the EVDO option screen. It gives you the options for automatic, HDR Digital, CMDA. Does anyone know the difference or the closest this would be to roaming?

- How do you turn roaming off on the HTC EVO?
- I noticed when viewing mail other than Gmail, my inboxes do not display all of my mail, only about 25+ out of my 100+ total. If this is normal, someone please let me know. If not please let me know how to modify the mail settings so i can view all my messages (i was not able to find any specific setting to do this myself).
- I noticed when going under Settings>Applications>Manage Applications there is about a 30 sec. loading/lag delay when the manage application menu is loading. I did encounter a Force Close error 1 time and had to restart phone. The long load time still happens after multiple hard boots to the phone. I was wondering if this is normal and if anyone else is experiencing this. If not i am happily open to any suggestions. This also happens when viewing running services but only with a 15 sec load time. (i have no 3rd party apps installed except for qik,google goggles,google maps, google earth, and google sky map)
- I have terrible signal in my house and get dropped calls all the time (not the EVO's fault) i never recieve a "drop call tone" which would be helpful that way i'm not left talking to myself. Does anyone know how to enable a drop call tone if possible?
- I searched everywhere for a "Notes" app on the EVO and did not find one in stock. A little weird to me because most phones come with some kind of note taking tool. ; Anyone have any good n safe suggestions for apps?
- Can someone explain the Android Power Bar Widget to me? I dont know what the "Circular arrows are for" what does it mean?
- I am just curious, does anyone know if there is some type of external "universal keyboard" compatible with the EVO.

NFL Mobile application forced an update today and I followed the instructions to uninstall the old application when the new one was installed. when I run the app I am getting an error notification that: "You appear to be roaming. to avoid excess roaming charges video has been disabled". I show 3G and am in my home area. I can play the videos if I enable WIFI but that isnt the point. My phone is not displaying the roaming icon. Phone is the Droid Incredible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe same thing happened on my Hero, so it's Sprint related. I rarely leave my house. When I do, I'm never more than 3 miles from home. My entire surrounding area is in Sprints coverage area. Ninety-eight percent of the time I'm steadily on the 3G. Every now and then though, while still at home, my phone changes over to roaming for no rhyme or reason! I know Sprint won't throw a hissy fit over the calls and data (unless over the 300mb), but why is my phone doing this? I just checked my account and it says I've used 7760kb of data while roaming.

Even when I search for one I am unable to find it. Is my problem because of the rom I have used? I know there are Desires sold in Japan and they work but I am at a loss.

I tried this and although it DID allow me to roam on Verizons Network I still didnt have any bars at work, no triangle and the signal was still low. Did the roaming update a few days ago (14th) and since my friendstream will no longer update. It says there Is an error with the HTC.straem. etc........ and it must be closed. Any one else getting this problem before or after the update? I get better signal strength but I'd rather have friend stream work.

I know it depends on usage, but they couldn;t tell me if I, say, checked my emails a couple of times and used the GPS a couple of times a day, how big a chunk of my 15 it would take.
