Android :: Recommendation For Some Apps Please?
Jun 25, 2010
Looking for some recommendations on some apps please.
1. I'm looking for a contacts app that manages my address book a bit better. I've gotten a bit sick of the default ones on my nexus one and dell streak.
2. RSS reader. Newsrob seems to be misbehaving for me at the moment. All evening I read my feeds and mark stuff read. but when I come back to look at my google reader on a pc the next day everythings marked unread. Is there a better one out there?

I know that there are loads around but without testing each one it is difficult and those I have tried don;t do what I want.Essentially I need to :
a. define as source folder on the SD card which contains the mp3 files and it should always default to that.
b. Play those files in order.
c. Remember if I stop half way through so that I can, later, continue from that point.
d. Have the usual controls ; Play, stop , next , last, and to be able to drag the time to advance within a single playback.

I'm looking for a simple alarm. Say I want the alarm to sound of next Thursday at 8:00 (with a text note re what the alarm is for would be really nice) or every June 7th, and a regular 24 hour alarm. On my PC I use Chameleon Clock which I rely on for scheduling. I'd love to find something like that if it's out there.

The HTC People app always seems pretty laggy and can take up to a whole minute just to call someone, which it shouldn't since i could do that in 10-15 seconds on even a non-smart phone. So I would like some suggestions - what would people suggest I use for fast contacts?

I really like the built-in calendar app on my new HTC Desire. But there's 3 things that it can't do, and I really need them:
1. I need to be able to set up how the calendar calculates week numbers. I live in Demark and in Europe we don't calculate week numbers the sane way as they do in the US.
2. I need to be able to set up repeated appointments that repeat every second week, or every third day.
3. I really want to be able to set the default reminder time to 'Do NOT remind me'. The built-in calendar app lets me set the reminder value to 'No remind' when I create a new event, but it won't let me set the default value to 'No remind'.So basically I need a calendar app that works precisely like the built-in one, apart from the 3 things mentioned above

I have much experience with Java, and am quickly getting to grips with Android. But I have very little experience with graphics... most of my work has been logical, back end web development. The last time I did any proper screen drawing was in the good old days of Applets (years ago).
I can see that Android has a very complex graphical interface, but I don't know where to start. I've looked at some of the sample apps that come with the SDK, but it's slow progress.
For example, I'm trying to learn by developing a simple rolling ball. Currently I'm using onDraw(Canvas canvas), a paint object, and path.addCircle() to draw a circle, which I then update frequently. However the result is jerky, and slow - I want to see it flying around the screen! Clearly this isn't the right way to go about it.
So two questions I suppose: 1) What graphics tools would you recommend to implement my example? 2) Where can I learn more about the graphics capabilities of android?

Can anyone recommend a good footy app, aimed specifically at the English premier league? I already have FotMob 4.0 but the interface is a little awkward in that there is not enough room to view the RSS feed, the menu part of the screen takes up too much real estate and there doesn't appear to be any way to get rid of it.

we're looking for high quality developer tools which have been ported & tested for Android. the first is a code correctness tool that will scan our code looking for non-syntactical errors (e.g. thread synch errors, uninitialized vars...). basically a lint- like tool for Android. the second tool we want is a coding style "enforcer" that will fix, or at least report, code segments that do not adher to our stdrd coding styles (e.g. bracing policy, function header commenting etc) the third one is, well, a placeholder for whichever tool you people have found to be of high value in developing your own Android apps...

So after reading many threads on here I am keen to know if you guys would still recommend the DHD. I am currently waiting for t mobile's stock to arrive before they swap my SGS for a DHD. I've played with one for a few mins happened to be a HTC rep in a local phone shop showing it to the staff and I asked for ago which I did but didn't get much time on it. took a few pics (very impressive camera) scrolled around. Seemed sooth even if it has far to many stock apps IMO by the looks of things. Am I still doing the right thing will all the experience you guys now have of it.

I keep my contacts on the phone since my SIM space has run out. I tried to use Google contact sync but that brings in all the people I have emailed and is not specific to just phone numbers. I am currently on 1.5 (am using PCCW/Hong Kong) and I see via HTC's website that they have announced a 2.1 OTA upgrade. Before I upgrade, I would appreciate if someone could provide a way for me to backup/restore my contacts should they get wiped out in the upgrade from 1.5 to 2.1

I'm new to Android. I recently was an iPhone fan but thought that Android was a better alternative to iPhone. So anyway, I have a few questions about the Captivate. Does Android have support for apps that you can use to password protect certain apps on the phone? Like messages, and photos for more private stuff. Another question I have: is the Captivates reception really bad? I currently have the iPhone 4 while it doesn't have the best of signal, its not too bad either. And my last question is if the captivate has support for 32gb cards. I'm sorry if someones already gone over these but I could find anything right away. Anyways, I look forward to Android and the Captivate.

Do not get me wrong - I love the Android, especially the vast amount of apps to choose from. But has anyone noticed how much more vibrant and polished the Palm Pre apps are as opposed to Android apps? Take the weather apps for example (Weather Bug or Weather Channel). They are so much brighter and complex on the Pre. I know the Pre apps are far less in number, but the ones that are there seem much more polished. Am I crazy, or does anyone else notice this?

I know the "cool kid in school" thing to do is make fun of the iPhone market for having 1,000's of 'Fart apps'
But let's be honest at the end of the day it's really not true, and now coming from being a previous iPhone owner and now a Droid owner i can honestly say, the iPhone app market wins by a TON.
This is just a general QUALITY of apps comparison as well.
NO i'm not switching back... but man do i miss the iPhone apps...
Especially facebook.. and others..
You can REALLY tell the difference between the quality of iPhone apps vs Android,
So why am i starting this thread?.. Well i'm hoping maybe a developer could chime in and enlighten us on why this is...
Things i'm curious about-
Is programming in android worse then in the iPhone OS? is that why apps are WAY less in quality?
And you can't give the excuse that it's because things are new, when the iPhone market came out the apps were quality at day 1, many of them were.
So what's the difference? i guess software...
Well i'm sticking with android even though this exists.. in hopes that maybe future Android OS updates and SDK's will improve this very obvious difference.. right now i'm not impressed at all... the apps are all Slow, and they look horrible.
And for twitter? holy crap... iPhone owners back me up here, but the iPhone twitter apps are lightyears ahead of android twitter apps.
Just take a look at Tweetdeck for iPhone, and compare to to what i guess is the best android twitter app, twidroid?
Compare those and you'll see what i'm talking about.

Is there a way to remove apps from My Android Apps list, on Android Market / Google Play? I have a few hundred in my list and a few dozen of those are apps I plan to never install again. I'd like to remove them from my list in the Market/Play. I've already uninstalled them from my phone.

I am under the impression that android apps can require other apps to be installed in other to operate. The main example I know is the zxing barCode scanner app, which gets used by a number of other apps. The zxing barcode app is free, but I was wondering what would happen if it wasn't?In particular, what would the user experience be like? How would they be notified, if at all, about the paid app requirement?
