Android :: Focusable EditText Inside ListView

Apr 21, 2010

I've spent about 6 hours on this so far, and been hitting nothing but roadblocks. The general premise is that there is some row in a ListView (whether it's generated by the adapter, or added as a header view) that contains an EditText widget and a Button. All I want to do is be able to use the jogball/arrows, to navigate the selector to individual items like normal, but when I get to a particular row -- even if I have to explicitly identify the row -- that has a focusable child, I want that child to take focus instead of indicating the position with the selector.I've tried many possibilities, and have so far had no luck.

Assuming there are other items in the adapter, using the arrow keys will move the selection up/down in the list, as expected; but when getting to the header row, it is also displayed with the selector, and no way to focus into the EditText using the jogball. Note: tapping on the EditText will focus it at that point, however that relies on a touchscreen, which should not be a requirement.ListView apparently has two modes in this regard:

1. setItemsCanFocus(true): selector is never displayed, but the EditText can get focus when using the arrows. Focus search algorithm is hard to predict, and no visual feedback (on any rows: having focusable children or not) on which item is selected, both of which can give the user an unexpected experience.
2. setItemsCanFocus(false): selector is always drawn in non-touch-mode, and EditText can never get focus -- even if you tap on it.

To make matters worse, calling editTextView.requestFocus() returns true, but in fact does not give the EditText focus.What I'm envisioning is basically a hybrid of 1 & 2, where rather than the list setting if all items are focusable or not, I want to set focusability for a single item in the list, so that the selector seamlessly transitions from selecting the entire row for non-focusable items, and traversing the focus tree for items that contain focusable children.

Android :: Place An EditText And TextView In A RadioButton?

I have a RadioGroup inside of a RelativeLayout. I've got a few RadioButtons for different options, like "Bob", "Joe", and "Fred". However, I need to add an "Other..." option with an EditText right next to a RadioButton in case a user wants to enter "Steve". Is there a way to do this?

Android :: RadioButton In ListView

Sep 16, 2010

I want to create a ListView with a RadioButton in every row. I'm using a CursorAdapter and I'm binding it in the right way, but I cannot manage correctly the RadioButton. I want that at any moment only one RadioButton to be checked (so when I check one, I would like the one that was checked before to uncheck). Furthermore, when I put the RadioButton on the row, I cannot manage anymore the setOnItemClickListener.

Android :: ListView Inside LinearLayout Inside ScrollView

Jul 7, 2009

So I've been extremely frustrated by this for a long time now.I've posted before, but can't seem to find a good solution. My goal is to have something pretty much exactly like the installed application details page in the Android Market.I need a list of items displayed along with other content above the list, and would like the content above to scroll up along with the list (exactly like the application details does for the "My Review" and other descriptive info).Due to responses to my previous posts, I came to believe that it really wasn't possible to do this with a ListView.So rather than using a ListView, I refactored my code to use a simple LinearLayout and add individual View items to the list, thinking I could just set each View as clickable and add an OnClickListener to each View in the LinearLayout.That's not working at all though, and now I'm getting even more frustrated.If someone can help me get the OnClickListener working, then I think it'll work, but I do need a separator for the LinearLayout.How do I add a separator like the one used for ListView to my LinearLayout?

Android :: ListView With RadioButton In SingleChoice Mode And A Custom Row Layout

Nov 22, 2010

I have a ListView, which is in singleChoice mode. All I want is to display a RadioButton to the side, that when clicked highlights to say it is selected, and when a different one is clicked that one goes back to unselected and the new one becomes selected. Why is this so hard? This should not be this complicated. I've spent DAYS looking for an appropriate answer to this and I have found nothing, so I'm asking hopefully in a clear and concise manner.

My layout for the listview (R.layout.view_orders):

CODE:.............

My custom row (R.layout.orders_row):

CODE:.................

My onCreate() method:

CODE:.................

Now everything underlying works as expected, you click on a radiobutton and through it's tag I can appropriately select that item from the list and manipulate it how I want. However, when the first radio button is clicked, the last one will be selected. Click that same radio button again, and it is now selected as well. Click it once more and nothing happens, both the last and the first are selected. Now I click any other one on the list, it gets selected like expected. Click anyone of the selected radio buttons and nothing happens, the radio button remains selected.

I have tried using the following in onCreate():

CODE:.................

And that just shows no radio buttons at all. AWESOME.

Now maybe (read: most likely), I'm just dense and can't figure this out, but I've seen this question asked a lot with no real answer. Lots of references to other tutorials or to the Commonsware guy's book. However, the comments are old now and his repository has changed so much, that those are no longer correct answers.

So, does anyone have any idea how to get the expected functionality out of this? Or failing that, just pass me along the GMail app's source code.

Listview Inside A Tab

Dec 1, 2012

I have a Listview and a custom made Adapter connected to it.This Listview is declared in an xml-file together with a TabHost. If the Listview is put directly in the layout and not in a tab, it works perfectly. But if I put it inside one of the tabs, it simply will not show.

Do I need to specify something special for the listview or the tabhost, or do I need to call some update/invalidate function on the tabhost after updating the list?

Android :: HTML Links In A TextView Inside A ListView

Jan 29, 2009

I've got a ListView where each item in the list is contains several controls. One of the items is a checkbox, and I can check/uncheck it without problems. The other items are some TextViews and a WebView. I've got autoLink turned on and linksClickable turned on, but I can't get links to fire up the browser when I click on them. This applies to both TextView and WebView. I've tried changing the parent to a GridView instead of a ListView, playing with setFocusable(), and all that, but to no avail.

Is it even possible to have interaction on the TextView-based elements of a row in a ListView? It seems like that *should* be possible, but I've been banging my head against this problem for a few weeks with no progress. What's the secret?

Android : Detect Scroll Position Inside A ListView?

Oct 10, 2009

I'm building a chat room application where new events are being polled for every X seconds. Every time that happens, this code updates the RoomAdapter (a custom subclass of ArrayAdapter) with the new data and scrolls it to the bottom:

RoomAdapter adapter = (RoomAdapter) getListAdapter();
for (int i=0; i<newEvents.size(); i++)
adapter.add(newEvents.get(i));
getListView().setSelection(events.size()-1);

This is fine, except that if the user is scrolling up to glance at the room's history, it's going to jump her down to the bottom when the poll happens. What I'd like to do is have it so that if the user is already at the bottom of the list, it stays there after a poll for new events. If the user's intentionally scrolled upwards, I'd like the user not to be disturbed.

How do I detect when I'm already scrolled to the bottom of a ListView?

Note: I can't do getListView().getSelectedItemPosition(), because as the docs note, calling setSelection when in touch mode does not actually select the item, just scrolls to it.

Android :: ListView Animation Of Views Inside Adapter That Got Updated

Aug 29, 2010

Im using ListView to to show some custom data, once data is updated in the adapter i call notifyDatasetChanged(), so the view will get updated, all of this works well, my issue though is i would like to run an animation once only on items that got changed when the adapter was updated. currently i keep a copy of all the changed objects and i tried to animate the correct items through the getView() call.

However if i do it only once for every getView call then i see no animation most of the time on items that changed. if i continue to do so in successive getView calls i see animation on items that don not change as well and also the ones that changed get animated again and again.

Im guessing sometimes android calls the getView() for other reasons than showing the generated view immediately, and thats the reason it doesnt work if i do it once.

Android :: ListView Items Not Clickable With HorizontalScrollView Inside / Make It?

Jun 6, 2010

I have quite a complicated ListView. Each item looks something like this...

In my activity, when an item is created (getView() is called) I add dynamic TextViews to the LinearLayout inside the HorizontalScrollView (besides filling the other, simpler stuff out). Amazingly, performance is pretty good.

My problem is that when I added the HorizontalScrollView, my list items became unclickable. They don't get the orange background when clicked and they don't fire the OnItemClickedListener I have set up (to do a simple Log.d call).

How can I make my list items clickable again?

Edit: setting android:descendantFocusability="blocksDescendants" on the topmost LinearLayout seems to work. I'd like to know if there are other ways, though: what if I want focusable items in my list items?

Android :: Dynamically Change Text Color Of A TextView Inside A ListView

Nov 18, 2010

I'm trying to create a game lobby for a project, and I'd like the game's status text to be a different color: red for an "[IN PROGRESS]" game and green for a game that's "[Waiting for x players]". The ListView will be populated with data, and each ListView item will have a game ID and then immediately to the right of that the game's status.

Right now I'm essentially using the Hello ListView code to create my ListView.

(In constructor)

CODE:...........

Then, I have a refresh button that obtains data from our database. It will get two Strings, one for the ID of the game, and the other for the status of the game. If the game status is 0, then it's still waiting for players. If the game status is 1, then the game has started. So, I create a gameItem to add to the gameList:

CODE:.............

This is where I'm stuck. I don't really understand how I can alter the specific TextView when I create the gameItem or when I add that to the gameList. There isn't a way I can see of accessing the TextView's properties. I see how the text of the view is set (through the mapping of the strings to "line1" and "line2", but I don't know how to change any of the properties.

Android :: Display Images On Demand Inside A Listview / Find Out List Item Is On Screen?

Oct 31, 2010

I am building a android aplication which will be consuming a json file from the internet. This json file contains a list of news from a particular website. Each json object contains information such like title, summary, descripition and web links for the news thumbnail and the original image.

I will be displaying in a listview three information: the news thumbnail, the title and the summary. Here resides my problem. I dont want to load all thumbnails from the internet if they wont be displayed. What I am trying to say is that why download a thumbnail from the 30th news if the user wont scroll down the image. So, i will, initially only download the thumnails from those news that are being displayed in the screen and when the user scrolls down to see more news, as soon as the list item appers to the screen i want to download the image and then display.

Is there a way to achieve this? Is it possible to find out if the list item is on the screen? I have been searching all over the internet for a solution for this but i am running out of ideas.
