Android :: Porting Java Apps To Android Platform
Oct 16, 2009
I know Java apps can be run in Android. But what I want to know is this: I have a perfectly normal Java app and I want to port it to an android platform. What changes would I need to do to my app in terms of GUI and other code to make it usable in Android? I know Android uses XML file to control the look and feel of its app. So would I need to change my GUI completely? I just want to know the general overview of how porting may be done. If anyone could point me to right resources, that would be great. Also, for your info I'm a newbie to developing android app.

I currently have an application using the libraries swing, swing.table, and awt on a java applet that I have running. I want to know what are the steps to get the application running as a native android app. I heard that I could use programs like Phonegap to just release a web based app for multiple platforms, but I am new to Android Programming (so far I just made a Hello Android app). I searched swing and awt, but I could not find any useful info.

We have a desktop/web java application and also getting into Android development.Ideally we would like one app that runs both on desktop and android.From what we can tell, it's not much possible to run normal java apps on android. But wondering if it can do it the other way? That is, run android apps easily on the desktop (without the user install the sdk or android emulator)?In a prefect world we'd like one app for both platforms. Realistically though it seems like we're going to have to have one app with two front ends?

I'm trying to run J2SE JAVA Application on Android.As you know, the main problem is that J2SE classes such as awt, applet, and etc are not supported in Android. Consequently, this means that I should replace those many java classes with Android classes.So, Do you have some idea or information for replacing J2SE classes with Android classes?

I wanted to check whether there is any JAVA Coding standards in Android platform for performance improvements.
For Example, like an Effective Java code in J2EE environment is to defined the number of elements in the ArrayList constructor rather leaving it blank (new ArrayList(noOfRows)) etc. I definetly suspect these performance tuning tips should be available because of the memory and resource constraints.

I have a question.
I am developing android application on Linux platform because i have to make a system.img with a application.
When adding a drawable resource and building the project with mm command, i met a below error.code..
At above error, the icon_send_type is the added resource.
This error occurred because the mm command did not generate R.java.
So, i want to know how to generate R.java by a manual on Linux platform.

how to structure a very simple (but computationally intensive) app which has the following general characteristics (no details needed).The app has some data (say 2MB) statically stored.When the app starts this data is preprocessed and a large structure of about 40Mb is created.
After the initialization, the app has one text field for input, one for output and a button (for start/stop).The user enters a query then press the start button.The app computes a result using the large array.If the calculation on the input takes too long, the user can stop the processing with the stop button and start again with a new input.
When I was doing this under windows/linux with C/C++, I had no problems: I used a large global array and two threads, one to draw interface and respond to user (mouse, clicks, etc.) and one to perform the computation.Which is the standard (best) way to structure this kind of app in Java/ Android ?
Should I use an Activity for the graphic interface and a Service for the computation ? Can I build the large array in the Activity when the app starts and pass a reference to it to the Service every time Start button is pushed ?
I just need to be pointed in the right direction, to avoid some blind alleys. In a sense using c/c++ would be better, but I read that developing in Java (for Android) is much easier so I will try first with Java and revert to C only if the app will turn out to be too slow.

I'm a junior iphone developer and got familiar with developing on xcode on top of Mac OS.I wanna build some Cross-Platform apps in the near future and wanna Use Ubuntu as my Operating system.I found many solutions that run only on Mac OS or need mac to build apps for iphone but this is not what i need. i need something which can keep me far from mac (for some reasons).I heard about AIR packager for iOS and that also AIR does apps for android but i'm not a flash guy (but can learn if it will do the job), so i wanna guidance from experience people like you about what is the suitable route should I take.

I am a C++ programmer interested in developing applications for Android as well as the iPhone platform. I have explored both these platforms by writing simple applications in Java (Android) and Objective-C (iphone). But the fact is that I am not comfortable with either of these languages, and it bothers me that I have to write 2 very different versions of the same application to support both platforms. (And then what do I do to run it on a Nokia phone?)Is using web technologies (JavaScript/HTML/CSS) a viable solution for writing apps which will run on multiple mobile platforms? I have heard of Appcelerator and PhoneGap, but I am not sure how mature these products are. I'd appreciate any feedback from folks who have used web apps as a solution for developing cross platform mobile apps.

For example, I just purchased an HTC One which is running the very latest Snapdragon S600 chip and Adreno 320 and I'm comparing it to the iPhone 5 (A6 and PowerVR SGX543MP3).
Here are a few applications (mostly games) that I've tried on both devices:
* Fruit Ninja - Touch input is delayed by about half a second on the HTC One but instant on iOS.
* Simpons Tapped Out - The voice sometimes stutters and moving buildings just isn't as fluid as iOS.
* Browser (Chrome and Android default) - Scrolling isn't as smooth.
Like I said, I'm honestly not biased one way or the other but this is just what I have noticed. The iPhone 5 has a much lower resolution but I've also had similar results on the iPad Mini (1024x768 resolution).
Does every application written for Android need to optimized for every individual CPU and perhaps these applications weren't optimized yet?

In an Android app I have a utility class that I use to parse strings for 2 regEx's. I compile the 2 patterns in a static initializer so they only get compiled once, then activities can use the parsing methods statically.
This works fine except that the first time the class is accessed and loaded, and the static initializer compiles the pattern, the UI hangs for close to a MINUTE while it compiles the pattern! After the first time, it flies on all subsequent calls to parseString().
My regEx that I am using is rather large - 847 characters, but in a normal java webapp this is lightning fast. I am testing this so far only in the emulator with a 1.5 AVD.
Could this just be an emulator issue or is there some other reason that this pattern is taking so long to compile?

I am trying to develop an app to supplement the built-in music player. I've used git to download the com.android.music package and looked around at its code. I can launch the music player by copying some of its code and launching activities with intents.
Now what I need to do is get a handle to its current view. In the MusicUtils.java file, I see a line that says
View nowPlayingView = a.findViewById(R.id.nowplaying);
I'd like to do the same thing. Only I don't have access to the R.java file, so I can't write e.g. R.id.nowplaying. How do I do this? How do I reference the music players R.java? I do know the R.java stuff is declared public so that shouldn't be a problem. Right?
Is it even possible? I saw this related question and am now wondering: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2437271/how-to-load-com-android-music-code-into-eclipse-and-compile
I'm working against the Android 2.2 SDK, but it'd be helpful to know if the answer is different for older versions such as 1.5.

As the title says i'm new to the Android community, and i don't have much experience on the development side either. but i am very interested in getting started. I see that Android apps are based off of Java... So would it be better for me to learn Java before getting started with the SDK and eclipse? Or is it just the same to jump right in on App development and learn on the fly?

I'm having some problems porting a Java application to work in Android platform. I detected an incompatibility problem between java sun and Adroid sdk in java.lang.Class. I oberved that: public Field[] getFields() Returns an array containing Field objects describing all fields which are defined. That's array is sorted as attributes are declared in the main Class in sun jdk. For example, next Class is defined as: public class Example { public boolean stop; public int atr1; public String name; ....
}

I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.
For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}
9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!
