Android :: Passing A Variable Outside From AlertDialog OnClick
Sep 19, 2010
I want to pass a variable to an outer function when user clicks on "OK" in AlertDialog. I'm trying this for example but it won't recognize the Variable.
CODE:....................
I know the code is a bit messed up but it's only for the sake of understanding.

Is there a way to have 1 onClick Lister for many buttons where I can toss a case statement to do things based on what buttons were clicked.
I know I can make 100 different listeners for 100 buttons but I have to think I can create some nifty variables to do it in less lines of code.

I am working to set a countdown timer. I have successfully (borrowed) a number picker (spinner) and set up the dialog box for the user to set the time. This is in a class called timepickactivity and the variables are hour and mins (R.id.hour and R.id.mins). I want to call the set values (R.id.hour and R.id.mins) from the dialog (timepickeractivity) to the actual countdown class (countdown) but I can't figure out how to get the values.

I have a list view with several columns; things such as name, date, etc. I want to be able to click on the header TextView and sort the list by that field. When the list loads the variable works, and a list is queried and sorted by the field _id (no surprise other than it works), but when i click on the header TextView I get a force close:
Thread [<3> main] (Suspended (exception SQLiteException))
ViewRoot.handleMessage(Message) line: 1757
ViewRoot(Handler).dispatchMessage(Message) line: 99
Looper.loop() line: 123
ActivityThread.main(String[]) line: 4595
Method.invokeNative(Object, Object[], Class, Class[], Class, int, boolean) line: not available [native method]
Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 521
ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run() line: 860
ZygoteInit.main(String[]) line: 618
NativeStart.main(String[]) line: not available [native method]
The TextView gives no errors when not changing my orderby variable.
Setting Variable:
private View.OnClickListener NameSortbtnListener = new View.OnClickListener(){
public void onClick(View v){
sort = " KEY_JOURNAL_TITLE ";
fillData();
} };
Populating List:
private void fillData() {
Cursor notesCursor = mDbHelper.fetchAllJournals(sort);
startManagingCursor(notesCursor);
String[] from = new String[]{journalDbAdapter.KEY_JOURNAL_TITLE,
journalDbAdapter.KEY_LOCATION, journalDbAdapter.KEY_JDATE,
journalDbAdapter.KEY_STEPS};
int[] to = new int[]{R.id.text1, R.id.text2, R.id.text3, R.id.text4};
SimpleCursorAdapter notes =
new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.notes_row, notesCursor,
from, to);
setListAdapter(notes);
}
Query (In DB Adapter):
public Cursor fetchAllJournals(String sort) {
return mDb.query(DATABASE_JOURNAL_TABLE, new String[] {KEY_JROWID,
KEY_JOURNAL_TITLE, KEY_JOURNAL_NOTES, KEY_JDATE, KEY_LOCATION,
KEY_STEPS},null , null, null, null, sort ,null);
}

I would like to setup a boolean called dFlag in the main.class of my program and reference it in another class.
I already have it setup to work locally just hitting a snag on how to do it.
Code:
public class Main extends Activity {
boolean dFlag; ///Debug flag, true=enabled | false=disabled
}
public class Other extends Activity {
if(dFLag = true) {
///Output debug message
}
}
Or is there an easier way to do what I want without having to re-invent the wheel so to speak?

I am a newb to Android and Java and want to write a funtion that will display a list based on a varable that I pass to the function. The function is below and the code below creates an array out of a string called type, but what I want to do is pass it a variable string and have it build a list based on that string. So if I wanted the type list I would say list_it("type")But if I try something like getResources().getStringArray (R.array.thelist); it doesn't work.Can someone point me in the right direction? public void list_it(String thelist){String[] types = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.type); ArrayAdapter<String> mAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item1, types);
setListAdapter(mAdapter);
ListView lv = getListView();
lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true);

I am trying to figure out what is the best way to go about creating dialogs. I can either create my own Dialog class (which, to me, is more clean and organized), or I can use AlertDialog.Builder (which would be done inline, and funky looking)... What are the positivies and negatives of either implementation?

Is copying the reference to the object and not the value of the object. Meaning, when I modify pos.top or pos.bottom, the original object gets modified. I'm guessing I am missing a concept of pass object by reference vs value here which I thought I understood. What is the fix here? Is it a problem with how I defined my custom class?

I'm trying to create an application that can use the android as a fax machine, IE Send a picture as a fax or receive a fax and save as a picture. So far I'm starting from the ground up and making sure I can intercept a call at the users discretion. I have an Receiver registered in the Manifest of my program with a filter of Phone_State which flags when the state has changed(IE incoming call).
So on my BroadcastReceiver I'm trying to have an AlertDialog popup prompting the user to either accept as fax or call but the AlertDialog seems to throw a android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException Error when it has an incoming call. My code is just simple an onReceive(context arg0, intent arg1) and I pass the arg0 to the AlertDialog...
The full error message is below
CODE:.............
From what I have seen in the AlertDialog code, it passes the context as well as a Window and WindowManager, which I believe is why it's crashing, is there a better way or something else I should be using which might overlay the call screen?

I have a TabActivity with 3 tabs. Each tab contains its own Activity. When one of the contained Activities pops up an AlertDialog, there are actually 3 dialogs created. The dialog has a Dismiss button and it must be pressed 3 times to finally dismiss the 3rd dialog.

just a short question for a better understanding: I'm developing an app based on the Android 1.5 Framework (with compatibility down to 1.1). But now I read about the new way of implementing click-handlers in Android 1.6 on the Android Developer Blog and I'd really like to use that in my app because it makes developer's life so much easier :) But can I use this (and the 1.6 Framework) without losing backward compatibility to 1.5 and 1.1? Best regards and sorry if this question is dumb [I just didn't find anything via google]

I know how to set a listener for.. let's say a button or a editext so that when clicked some action happens:
buttonOReditextl.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View view) { Action goes here } });
how can I set a onClick event for when the user taps/ clicks on the screen? or the surface.. I'm not sure? I want a picture to be taken when the camera is on.. but don't know how to make a listener to all the camera view instead of having a button to take a picture.

I'm using ActivityInstrumentationTestCase2 to do automated black-box testing on my GUI. Is there a way to click on a dialog, or get Views belonging to the Dialog in unit tests?The only way I could come up with is to keep a reference to the dialog and have my Activity implement a getter method to let testcases access the dialog. Is there a better way that doesn't require changing my production code?

After the ListView is added into the AlterDialog, there is a centered gradient separator line below the title of the alter dialog, it is just above the ListView.
Is there any way to get rid of it or change its color ? I do not want to show it.

I have a DialogPreference in my Preference Activity and would like to know which button was pressed. I have implemented the OnSharedPreferenceChangeListener which does not seem to get triggered when the DialogPreference is selected. I have also tried OnPreferenceClickListener but this gets triggered as soon as the DialogPreference is clicked from the main screen and not when one of the actual dialog buttons was pressed. I think I need to implement onClick for this dialog but I am not sure where to do this. I have looked at the API Demo code and it shows how to create the dialog but not how to determine which button was pressed.
public class Preferences extends PreferenceActivity implements OnSharedPreferenceChangeListener {
private static final String LOG = "test"; private DialogPreference mfactory;
@Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); ....................
