Android :: Pass User Defined Intend Actions / Can I Create Own And Use In Code

Oct 5, 2009

Is it possible to pass user defined Intend actions?

That is instead of using predefined Intend actions like "ACTION_MAIN" can I create my own action and use it in my code?

If so how do I do that?

I have been surfing for this detail for long but dint find anything useful. Can any of u help me regarding this?

Android :: Spinner - How To Do Distinguish User's Actions From Computer's Actions In OnItemSelectedListener

Nov 17, 2010

I'm in a trouble managing a spinner. I have a spinner with its adapter. I initialize the spinner with a list of values when starting my activity. Then I force the selected value to be the one used in the object that I manage.

Once the screen is initialized :
When the user selects a value in the spinner, according to the selected value, I may continue (or not) to another activity for let the user choose a complementary and necessary value.

If the user "cancels" this second activity, I want to rollback the spinner to its previous selected value, and cancel some actions made in the meantime.

If the user goes to the end of the second activity, everything is fine and I want juste to refresh the spinner display with the datas selected in the second activity (I overload the getView method in the adapter to do this).

Overall, I can easily do all of this, however, when I force the selected value in the spinner at the begining of my activity, or whene returning back from the second activity by "Cancel", the change value event is catched and the second activity is triggered (the user did not click anything at all).

How would you allow the second activity to be lauched only if the change of the selected value in the spinner is due to a manual action from the user, and prevent that same second activity to be launched when the value of spinner is changed "in the code "?

I tried many solutions, as setting a boolean into the adapter that tells if the next event will be raised because of an "in the code" action.

Or also putting a boolean in the adapter that tells if the adapter has initialised itself, and I force that boolean to true on the forst change catched event.

Android :: User Defined Application Properties?

Aug 28, 2009

Where is the right place to specify general user-defined properties, like a host address or a service mail address ? The properties should be accessible from my activities.

I would like to specify such attributes within the AndroidManifest.xml, but there seems to be no elements available for user-defined properties. So the only way may be to put such properties into a resource file as strings or to hide them into the source code...

Android :: Get User Defined Environment Variables?

Sep 20, 2010

I would like to use self defined Environment variables in my source code.

I use System.getenv() to do this and the code line looks like this. Log.d("MyTest","== MyEnv " + System.getenv("AP") + " ANDROID_ASSETS:" + System.getenv("ANDROID_ASSETS"));

Before I execute my code I define my AP variable with export: export AP="12345" and the this is my output of set command

ANDROID_ASSETS=/system/app
ANDROID_BOOTLOGO=1
ANDROID_DATA=/data
ANDROID_PROPERTY_WORKSPACE=9,32768
ANDROID_ROOT=/system
AP=12345

Then I execute my code and I get this line from logcat

D/MyTest( 5363): == MyEnv null ANDROID_ASSETS:/system/app

The value for my defined Environment variable is null. Any suggestions on why it didn't work?

Android :: Saving ArrayList Of User Defined Objects

Aug 10, 2010

I am working on an application where I am saving the state of an application in an ArrayList. Now, to save this state, I tried to use Serialization. But, somewhere in the user defined object, I am using Button, which is not letting me serialize the entire object. I wanted to know, is there any other way of saving this array list between onPause and onResume? I even tried onSaveInstanceState, but it doesn't have support for Array List.

Android :: How To Check If User Defined Service Is Already Running

Sep 6, 2010

I have a service that is running within the context of my application. It gets invoked at the start of the activity and then gets update when new data is inserted or deleted from the database. The problem is that everytime I start the activity , it restarts the service. As you may have guessed - not a very intuitive design. Therefore I was wondering if there is a way to determine if the service is already running before starting it. I know I can bind to the service but I do not want that since the main activity needs to exits after the database operation is completed. I know for system services, you can get the service details from the application context. How do you do it for user defined service?

General :: Where Are User Defined Fields In Android Contacts

Apr 29, 2012

Have been a long time user of Outlook and Blackberry and store a lot of information in the User Defined Fields. Those fields seem to have been eliminated from all of the Android Contact Apps. I don't see them in Motorola Corporate Sync, Touch Down or Moxier Mail. Am I missing something, can't believe the developers of Android apps would just skip those fields. Any App that I can store and sync those fields. Google Contacts has the fields. I have just upgraded from a Blackberry Bold to a Verizon Droid Maxx. Love the big screen on the phone, struggling with the touch keyboard and really struggling with losing half of my contact information.

Android :: Modify A An Existing ROM To Control User Actions

Sep 2, 2010

I am creating an Android application for a customer which will be pre-installed and distributed together with the handsets. Now the customer asked me to lock down the ROM to prevent the future users from using anything else apart from this one app. I.e. no browsing, no email, nothing which could create any costs etc.

Now after some googling it seems to be relatively straightforward to remove applications from an Android image. But even if I can remove the web browser, email client, the Android Market App etc, how can I make sure that the user will not reinstall those apps via the USB connector? As Android is just Linux I am sure there are ways of denying all users the right to install new applications (or actually denying them pretty much anything apart from using this one app).

To clarify things a bit, the customer does not want to use the android devices as phones, even though they are phones. With 100€ touch screen phones becoming available, it becomes viable to use those phones for just one specific purpose. In my customers case, the device will be used as something like a POS system: the employee uses the phone to process a certain kind of customer request, and for this the app needs to have a data connection which will accrue costs of course. Now obviously contracts can be set up that will oblige employees to pay any irregular costs themselves, but why make it that complicated?

This is not about taking freedom away from users but rather about using android phones as general purpose touch screen devices with a data connection that employees can use in a business environment without shooting themselves in the foot with unexpected high data connection cost.

Android :: Defined Color Under Res / Values Not Usable In Code

I defined a white color in mycolors.xml under res/values as below:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

<color name="my_white">#ffffffff</color>
</resources>

In my code, I set the text color of a TextView as the white color I defined:

TextView myText = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.my_text);
myText.setTextColor(R.color.my_white);

But the text in the TextView turned out to be a black color. When I use @color/my_white in layout xml files, it works fine. I check the generate R.java, and see: public static final int my_white=0x7f070025;

Android :: Need To Create A Background Service That Listens For Actions

Aug 26, 2010

I'm new to the android platform, and I need to create a background service that listens for actions from different applications, the home activity, menu items in different apps, etc. Is it enought to call several event listeners and pass the different home activity events (and events from other activities) to the listeners? If so, what exactly to I pass to my event listener? Is the home activity an object that I can call? What is it and how do I pass it? Otherwise how to I listen for user interaction with variouse elements of a given view/activity? I need the listeners to trigger an activity that occurs before the event they asked for. For example. 1. They press the arrow button on the homescreen. Before it pops up, a picture pops up on the screen.

Android :: Is There A Secure Pass Code System To Buy Applications

Nov 25, 2010

OK maybe I'm being paranoid and behind the rest of the world who has already done this: I'm afraid of adding my credit card to my Google Checkout account! My main concern being a super intelligent user of my Android phone who will buy a million apps (potentially!) - my 5 year old son

I used to have a credit card on my account - but that's expired
Knowing that the card had expired, I thought I would test out the buying of an app
I was surprised that it only took a few pages of my clicking yes to buy the app
(The purchase didn't go through - I got an email saying this because my credit card couldn't be charged)

Question: is there a secure pass code system to buy applications?
Like needing to input a code at the last step of buying
(I think this is how iPhone works - I say this not having owned one)

I don't think there is a secure pass system - I've played around with my phone loads and have never come across anything. BUT, EVEN if there was such a pass system: there's still something wrong!
I've bought my phone. Not made any changes. Just started using. I would imagine that's what everyone does - as opposed to buying and then customising and making secure (and maybe optimizing the use of energy so that it doesn't die within a few hours of use)

Buying an application: you can cancel within 24 hours (I think that's the time limit) Over the weekend, I let go of business life and only pick up on Monday - so if my son purchased and installed an application on Friday evening, I wouldn't find out until some time later - because I don't look at my phone OR my emails over the weekend! (+ Say if an application was purchased that I then managed to cancel - I then lose the right to buy again and trial with the right to cancel - a small point, but valid regardless I think)

Would be interested to hear what others say - maybe I'm missing something and maybe I'm using incorrectly.

Samsung Moment :: App Or Option Where Can Use Pass-code To Unlock Phone Rather Than Pattern?

Nov 26, 2009

This was pointed out earlier by someone on a thread and I couldn't seem to find it. But just to point it out again the moment can be turned off or put on airplane mode even while its locked. This may be a bad thing if someone steals your phone and you want to use someones phone to either call or text it so that it will ring to find out who has it. All the thief has to do is put it on airplane mode or turn it off to deactivate ringers, sound, and gps.

Is there an app or option where I can use a passcode to unlock the phone rather than the pattern?And is there a way to track my phone through gps just in case it's lost or stolen?Any ideas or suggestions if a device someone rely relies on a lot is lost or stolen? My friend on his moment was able to add a message on the home screen saying "If found please contact "phone number" "email" and will be given a "$300" reward.

Android :: When Connect By Code With UrlConnection Get: User-Agent - Unavailable

Sep 15, 2009

I have found an issue. I have a server that uses User Agent header to identify the device that is connecting to it. But when i connect to the server using HttpURLConnection i get no User Agent header, but when i connect with the browser it sends the correct User Agent.

For testing i am using an echo server that replies with the headers it found on the request.

When i connect with browser i get: eg: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.5; en-fr; HTC Hero Build/CUPCAKE) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1 Up.Link/6.3.1.20.06.3.1.20.0.

But when i connect by code with UrlConnection i get: User-Agent: UNAVAILABLE.

Does anyone know we i get different behaviors? How i can i connect in the same way the browser does?
