Android :: Optimization Proposals For ListView With Data From Multiple Tables

Aug 18, 2010

I just encountered the following situation. I have an Android app with a scenario which I guess may happen in multiple apps. It's about tagging/labeling/categorizing, call it as you want.After CommonsWare's feedback here a bit of a clarification. I'm weird about doing the second query to the DB inside the CursorAdapter, basically this would result in one query per row and I fear this will heavily impact my performance (I've still to test it on a real device with a substantial amount of data to see how much this impacts).My question therefore is on whether there are some strategies on how to avoid this given my data model or whether I have to basically "live" with that :)

Android :: Long ListView Optimization / Usability

Nov 17, 2010

I have a long list to display in a listview. Let's say 200 items. This is a long list, but i can't reduce it. Now my list is slow and is not convenient for the user.I need something like a paging system: at the beginning I load 25 items. When the user reach the end I show a button, or something like it, to load other 25 items. An Iphone style solution.Is there a better way? Or what is the best solution?

Android :: Possible To Retrieve Data From Two Tables Via ContentProvider Way?

Apr 5, 2009

How to retrieve data from two tables via the ContentProvider way? I.E. the database of Calendar application, include many tables including Events and Deleted, and some others. I want to retrive records in Events table, whose _sync_id field is also in Deleted table. Usually, we write a SQL sentence like: select (all fields in Events) from Events as e, Deleted as d where e._sync_id = d._sync_id or select * rom Events as e where e._sync_id in select _sync_id from Deleted etc. But, how can I accomplish it in the ContentProvider way? I saw ContentProvider.query take a Uri as the first parameter, but pity that I don't know how to build one that could fulfill my purpose.

General :: Android App - Use Fusion Tables To Present Data?

Aug 16, 2012

Now I've done a bit of research into Fusion tables already and I know it's possible for me to put all the data that's going to be in my app into a fusion table and then display the fusion table there for the user to see the data. Much easier to update the data when need be instead of making it static text and having to update the app via the play store every time I need to update the data.

How do I do this though? All I know is that it's possible and that I should use the Fusion table API. More than anything I just need a starting point so I know how to set up Eclipse and then learning the code is up to me.

Any apps at the moment that use Fusion tables to hold their applications data? Would be good to download them and have a play.

Android :: Android ContentProvider Database Query Multiple Tables

May 7, 2010

I'm writing an RSS reader for Android. I've faced a certain difficulty which the problem I can't resolve since databases aren't my expertise.. So i figured out maybe one of you could help me out! I currently have 3 tables (Categories, links and feeds). My goal is too link a feed to multiple categories. Therefor I'm using a Link table. My databases is an Android ContentProvider (sqlite) and looks like the following:

| Categories | | Links | | Feeds |
|------------| |---------| |-------|
| _ID | | Category| | _ID |
| Title | | Feed | | Title |
| URL |

I currently wrote the following code in my FeedListActivity to retrieve a list of links and their feeds.

CODE:.................

Now my question:

I was wondering how I could optimize this database layout, code or query so I would get my entries in a more efficient way. Because i believe this link table or the query to retrieve links isn't needed! Or am i doing this the correct way?

Android :: Multiple Views For For Row In ListView

Jan 17, 2010

I have a ListView that could have 4 different views for a row depending on the data for the row. I have the ListView working correctly overriding getViewTypeCount and getItemViewTYpe. I originally was trying to dynamiclly update the view type count as new views were inflated by forcing calls to getViewTypeCount because it was possible that maybe one or two views may be all that would be needed. The app never functioned correctly crashing after there was more than one view added. The problem was fixed by setting getViewTypeCount to always return 4. I noticed getViewTypeCount is automatically called on app start-up and never called again unless a force call is made. So I'm just curious if this can be changed dynamically or do you need to know the number of max views you can possibly have and override getViewTypeCount to return that max value.

Android :: How To Handle Multiple Adapters For One ListView?

Jul 6, 2009

Currently I'm trying to find an efficient way to handle the following scenario. Please comment on my current implementations and all feedback is greatly appreciated! I have about 7 adapters with data. This data comes from database and some come from xml queries over the internet which are kept static in memory. In my current implementation I re-use one ListView constantly to display this data as requested by the user. Here are the questions: 1. Is this a proper approach? or should I have a ListView for every Adapter?

Android :: Multiple Intents In A ListView Populated Via Subclass

Jun 2, 2010

I have a ListActivity which is being filled via an internal class "OrderAdapter" - while the list is being populated I set various OnClickListeners on the TextView elements which should open the same view with different parameter values per line. My problem I have is that no matter which entry in the list I click I will always get to a view with the same parameter ID (it's always the ID of the last line in the list) - even though the output of the ID varies if I output it to the TextView.

Here is the code of the internal class which populates the list in the ListActivity:

CODE:.............

Any ideas why it always opens the view with the same ID even though the TextView "tvCheatTitle" displays a different value in every line?

Android :: Cursor Adapter - Binding Multiple Item Values In ListView

Jan 12, 2010

I have the following code to intantiate a SimpleCursorAdapter to use with a ListView. As you can see I have passed the R.layout.log_item to display the list items, and one value/control to bind to (TripDate).

SimpleCursorAdapter sca = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.log_item,c,new String[] {DBAdapter.KEY_LOG_TRIPDATE},new int[]{R.id.txtTripDate});

This works. I currently only have one widget in the layout xml, a TextView to hold the TripDate.
How do I pass multiple binding parameters for the additional widgets in the layout? So I can also display other info.

Android :: PNG Optimization On Packaging Process

Oct 28, 2009

I've noticed that the PNGs of my application with some gradients effects looked terribly bad at the device (a Samsung Galaxy) and at the emulator, and I've found the following note at the documentation (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/2d- graphics.html):

Image resources placed in res/drawable/ may be automatically optimized with lossless image compression by the aapt tool. For example, a true-color PNG that does not require more than 256 colors may be converted to an 8-bit PNG with a color palette. This will result in an image of equal quality but which requires less memory. So be aware that the image binaries placed in this directory can change during the build. If you plan on reading an image as a bit stream in order to convert it to a bitmap, put your images in the res/raw/ folder instead, where they will not be optimized."

I've tried the res/raw suggestion, but it didn't worked.

I've tried to use the image as JPEG as a workaround, but I couldn't use 9-patch.

I've uploaded a comparison between the original png and the "optimized" png that is shown on the emulator or devices: [url]

One workaround would be put the images at /assets/ and manually load and set the image on the ImageViews, but it requires a lot of code changes.

General :: Android Kernel Optimization

What sections of kernel code are changed for optimization of performance.

Like we can change
1) the minimum free memory that android need to keep free.
2) Rate of clearing cache
3)Advanced LMK- where we can kill more than one process at at time when memory scarcity occurs.
4) Reducing logging.
5) In framework we can change the oom_adj value of important processes.
6) Implement Zram for kernel.
7) change the minimum and maximum no of process for AMS.

I want to know all the changes that can be made into kernel or framework code to optimize performance. I also want to know how can we implement swapcache for android kernel. What changes do i need to make in the code.

Android :: Build Library Without Optimization In Order To Properly Debug It

Mar 12, 2009

I'm trying to debug native library (in particular, libril.so). Everythig is going fine, breakpoint is being hit, I can go thru the lines of RIL_onRequestComplete() function. But when I tried to print out particular struct I got,

(gdb) print pRI $2 = <value optimized out> (gdb) print pRI->pCI $3 = (android::._115 *) 0x613 (gdb) print pRI->pCI->requestNumber Cannot access memory at address 0x613

I suspect it could be due to optimization done by compiler. But when I tried to add,

LOCAL_CFLAGS := -g3 -O0

into makefile of the lib, I've got another problem when I cannot correctly set breakpoint on desired function. Instead of correct one,

(gdb) break RIL_onRequestComplete Breakpoint 1 at 0xae402e4e: file hardware/ril/libril/ril.cpp, line 1800.

I got,

(gdb) break RIL_onRequestComplete Breakpoint 1 at 0xffffab44: file bionic/libm/src/s_tanf.c, line 42.

Does anybody know what could be a problem, and what is the right way to handle this?
