Android :: ArrayAdapter Of Dynamic Size
Oct 19, 2010I need a gallery to be able to hold up to thirty custom views. These views need to added or removed whenever, they also need to be able to be display in a display bow beneath the gallery. How do I do this?I looked at the doc file for arrayadapter but it requires me to use a reference Id for each view I add, but each view is all java coded. Should I just use setId upon creation of the view and just throw that id into the array adapter, or is there a way to create one without using resource id's?

How To Take Data From Edit Text And Times It Against A Spinner Value - Dynamic Update
Mar 11, 2012I'm trying to make a simple order system. So the user selects a burger type from a spinner, then the user can enter in the quantity and then there is some math taking place in the background which sets a text view at the bottom with the total price. I'm not sure what method I'm meant to use so that it is updated dynamically when the user changes the text view quantity.
If i just say that all burgers are 2.50, i need some sort of method saying, if/when data is entered into the edit text , take that data and then times it by 2.50 and set it in the total text view below. I'm just unsure on the method part of it so it's dynamic and will change when the edit text quantity is altered.

I'm looking for a way to produce a dynamic activity based on a JSONArray object.
Here an example of a JSONArray object:

This JSONArray could be totally random. It could have 2 text views, 3 select menus, 1 text view and so on.
The goal is to iterate over this JSONArray and create the appropriate elements within my android code.
To produce the result I've thought of a simple switch which would render one by one my different JSONArray to an android widget.
But after that how could I have access of every property of every widget rendered?
Edit: I need as well to assign an event listener on some widget as taking the GPS coordinated...

Basically, my application will let the user create a multiple number of profiles and each of these profiles will save custom values for a fixed number of preferences. So this way, the user does not have to change the preferences every time he wants this app to run differently, he can just switch the profile. One way I think will work is by subclassing all the standard Preference classes and calling their setKey method with my custom preference key, containing the profile name, but this is ugly. So is there a cleaner and more standards compliant way to do this?

May 6, 2010I'm all new to Android and I'm trying to create a spinner programmatically and feeding it with data from an array, but Eclipse gives me a warning that I can't handle.
Here's what I got:
This ArrayList holds the elements that should be in the spinner (gets filled from a file later on):
ArrayList<String> spinnerArray = new ArrayList<String>();
This is code ...
Now the second line (ArrayAdapter...) gives me a warning in Eclipse saying "ArrayAdapter is a raw type... References to generic type ArrayAdapter<T> should be parameterized", I have no idea how to fix this (or what that means in the first place :) ).
It's just a warning and the App seems to run alright, but I'd still like to understand what's wrong and fix it.

On my device (Motorola Milestone) and in the emulator this looks like the standard gray spinner widget.
On of my colleagues uses a Motorola Backflip and on his device the Spinner is black. Now its very hard to read the font in the spinner.
What do I have to do to use my own view for the spinner? I don't mind to have the gray spinner on all devices, but it should always look the same on all devices.

Jan 25, 2010I have a spinner 'aperture' set up with a list of numbers, and a spinner 'mode' with two options. When a button is pushed I need a calculation to run using various inputs, including the current selection from 'aperture' and a value derived from 'mode'. How do I call the value of a spinner so I can use it in a calculation?
Also, how do I use the spinner 'mode's selection to set this other value before implimenting it in the calculation? To be more specific, if the spinner is set to Small then the value I use in the calculation is 0.015, whereas if Large is selected I need to use 0.028
My other inputs are EditText views, so right now I am set up like this:

Android :: Popup List Like Spinner Without Spinner
Jan 25, 2010I have a spinner widget in my activity which lets users pick a list name.
Normally, the function of the spinner is to switch between lists but for a couple of instances, I swap out the selection change listener to perform a different function with the same list of options. Once the selection has been made, the old listener is restored and life goes on.
This is a bad and buggy arrangement. Instead, I would like to have a function that just takes a selection listener and some other parameters and shows a popup list that's populated by the same cursor (or and identical cursor) as the spinner, without using the spinner itself.
Is there any way I can do this?

what is intriguing me is that the first spinner onitemselection works perfectly ( I can see the values in LogCat) then when I change selection of the 2nd spinner I am gettging an error on this line: String selected= (String) s2.getSelectedItem(); So the compiler gets insisde then onItemSelected function of the 2nd spinner but throws an Handler exceltion on s2.getSelectedItem()
why? it works perfectly for the 1st spinner.

Apr 10, 2009I'm running into difficulties overriding an ArrayAdapter to be displayed in a ListActivity. The ArrayAdapter is filled asynchronously. What I'm trying to do is add a special "sentinel" object that sits at the beginning of the list to show the progress of the computation. Ultimately this may be a progress bar, but right now I am just using a TextView as a placeholder. The problem is that the sentinel seems to get inserted multiple times into the list - not just once at the beginning. It *seems* to be appearing once per "page" of list data (so if 8 list items fit on the screen, my sentinel appears as the 1st, then 9th, then the 17th, etc..), but that interpretation may not be accurate. While maybe not how ArrayAdapters were intended to be extended, I thought something like this should work by simply overriding getView() to show my custom TextView for index.

Jun 16, 2010I have a strange problem with one of my ListActivity. I have overrided the default ArrayAdapter in order to customize my list. I have then filled the adapter with an ArrayList.
If I insert an element on the list and then call notifyDataSetChanged() on the adapter everything works fine.
But if I insert an element at the END of the list and then call notifyDataSetChanged(), the new element doesn't appear ...
And finally if I override getCount() on my adapter like this :

Apr 19, 2010I need some simple databinding for a Spinner. I want to display 2 items for each dropdownitem.
So when the user clicks the spinner I get a list like code...
I understand this can be done when using a Cursor, according to the databinding info on android dev. Like code...
However, I don't get my data from a database, so I don't use a cursor, I use a ArrayAdapter. Unfortunately it looks like there is no support for databinding with this adapter.
Is there a way to do this?

But now I want to keep the list of items dynamic, i.e. I want to be able to add/remove items from the selection list at runtime. However, when I call adapter.add(item) or adapter.remove(item) I always get a UnsupportedOperationException, even though the Javadocs of the ArrayAdapter class describe these two methods as to be usable for exactly that intended purpose.
