Android :: Need Phone Model Recommendations
Oct 19, 2010
My contract with T-Mobile UK is up for renewal & i think its time to upgrade from my beloved G1 to something else, Question is, What to? Over the past few months i have been looking at many different phone's and i have no idea what to go for. Basically I'm after the following from my phone:
*Android 2.1/2.2 Based device
*Physical Keyboard
*Vanilla/Stock Android (No UI)
*Better Battery Life then my G1. The phones I've been looking at are the Motorola Milestone, Milestone 2 & the HTC Desire Z/T-Mobile G2. The only thing with all all of them is they all feature a new UI (Either MotoBlur or Sense) which I'm not after. I thought i had solved all my problems with the T-Mobile G2 (the Desire Z but with just Stock Android) until I found out its for the US only. Is there any other models that anyone can recommend or am I just going have to put up with not having Stock/Vanilla Android?

Let me start by saying that I'm sure this has been covered but a search revealed nothing and an updated discussion can always help. So again, sorry for covering treaded ground, but here we go.I'm leaving my job and giving up my company blackberry - so I need a new phone/carrier/the whole package. I am at this point pretty darn addicted to smartphones and use them heavily for web browsing, email, maps, twitter, playing music, and scheduling myself (I don't really play games though). While my blackberry curve was leagues better than my old Windows Mobile-powered-Wing it still has left a lot to be desired. I need a step up.So its basically iphone vs an Android phone and while the iphone seems to win in nearly all the benchmarks out there, I just can't get past the Apple Tax, closed platform, non-replaceable battery, and my general Google fanboy-ism. I could also see myself developing OSS apps at some point - which Android has the more compelling story for.Further research has lead me to view my options as the Nexus, HTC Droid, or Eris. The Eris - although it has great reviews - just seems a bit kiddie so it's a distant third. My concerns are in this order* Good hardware (I'm ok with an onscreen keyboard unless the touchscreen sucks)
* Total cost of ownership
* Ability to use at my new job (meaning syncing with Exchange Server - though this shouldn't be a huge problem)
* Snazzy Operating system.

I'm looking to get an Android based phone and I thought I had decided on one, but since then I keep seeing other options and I'm not sure what to go with any more. It would be nice if anyone could point me to the best option for me. The only things I'm looking for in an android phone specifically is the ability to call, text (very little chance this won't be included :P) and GPS. I do not want a high-end one, and I certainly don't want one which has an enormous screen/form like the Desire, Galaxy S or likewise. I'm looking to spend no more than 250, but would prefer the option to be sub-200 and possible to buy in the UK. I'm not looking for a contract or branded, and want to buy it outright, so importing can be an option assuming it's not troublesome. It's important that the tech be powerful enough that the UI isn't sluggish and is fairly responsive. A nice plus would be to have WiFi capability, with it being possible to tether. The phone I was originally looking at was the HTC Wildfire, and the only downside I could find about the phone was the screen resolution. Then I seen an announcement for the new LG Optimus One and became unsure and thought there may be another better option around.

I'm interesting in buying a Samsung Galaxy but first I'd like to know if all Android apps are phone model independent? I know that all the cool custom ROM stuff from XDA Devs is HTC only but apps are not? Mostly, I mean Open Home, Unlock 2.0 and Better Keyboard with their skins.
Same question goes about widgets.

when the Optimus V came out, I found a thread either on here or XDA about how to change the model number to think it was a different phone. I did this to allow for the usage of Netflix, and I think I may have changed it to a Nexus model..
My current phone, the Optimus F7, is rooted and running stock Android 4.1.2 JB. (I rooted in order to allow for uninhibited tethering from my carrier.)I have browsed here, XDA, and countless pages on Bing and Google... yet I have found nothing about doing this... to any phone. My only desire (not the phone) is to make my F7 think it's - at least - a Galaxy S3. Many of my friends, coworkers and family have the S3 and I figure out things and solve problems on their phones, yet I find nothing on my own, so I simply wanted to turn it into an S3.
I am aware that I could simply get an S3, but I have had horrid luck with Samsung devices (not software) in the past, but have had wonderful luck with LG devices.

After three years of iPhones, I'm all set with that ecosystem and I want to move on the Android. I followed the Rachel UI since it was demoed last fall and have had an interest every since. Now that the phone is finally in the US I have a couple of questions:
1. Why is AT&T's No Commitment Pricing $349.99 while Sony Style's is $499.99? Neither price involves a new contract or extension.
2. I've read something about Android devices on AT&T being limited in terms of apps. Does that mean I can only install apps from the Marketplace? If that's the case, is it that big of a deal? I've never felt the need to jailbreak my iPhone, for what that's worth.
3. Other there any other downsides to getting the AT&T phone over a import/unlocked model?
4. Anything else an iOS convert should know?
I've poked around on these (and other) forums but couldn't really find black and white answers to my questions.

I just realized that I posted my last thread in The Lounge rather then Android Lounge which I intended to Makes sense why I haven't gotten any replies. Anywho, this is what I posted earlier Just signed up for your forum to ask for your recommendations for my first smartphone. Now, I'm leaning towards an android mainly because I don't want an iPhone and it seems like it has some great feature as well as a lot of potential. Now, the only issue is that I live in Canada and I'm with Rogers. (Sim cards)My current criteria is that I want a touch phone and it has to support a sim card. External qwerty keyboard is a bonus!I'm sure you all get requests like this all of the time but some help selecting a new phone would be great. I tried doing my own research on what phone to buy but I'm really not great with hacking phones and whatnot to make things work with my carrier but I'm willing to try.tl;dr:Need smartphone with sim card and touchscreen.

I have a huge filofax thing, which I would like to ditch from my bag, and wondered if I could turn my phone into something more suitable. I have jorte calendar, but I do find it annoying that you can't read what's in the box, as even the smallest font is too big. Any ideas on a better calendar. I would also like somewhere to store my addresses, and a password locked notepad. I often use a note pad to jot down passwords & username etc. Any suggestions would be great, free or not i dont mind!

So what are some good Widgets? I hear Beautiful Widgets is good but has a glitch in landscape mode. (Can somebody please explain this?) The Widget types I am looking for are Weather, Time, and Productivity (Such as Notes or a Calendar.)

Let me start by listing the ones that would be useless to me:
I don't get the point of weather widgets. I don't need to know the exact temperature every time I look at my phone. I just check the weather app once in the morning and I'm good for the day. The weather doesn't change that often people!
I don't need a clock widget. The time is always displayed at the top anyway, and on my phone's lock screen too along with the date. I don't use any alarm clocks. I don't use the calendar for anything. My days are all the same. I don't follow any sports. I got rid of the search widget that was running on my phone since there's a dedicated search button on the phone.
I do enjoy following politics and technology news (I'm a computer programmer). Right now there's a single widget running on my phone called "Battery Indicator" because I like to know the exact percentage of power remaining rather than an graphic approximation. So, any widget recommendations for me? Any cool widgets you enjoy that you think I might wanna try?

As the title suggests, can someone recommend a good Android RPG? Not necessarily the kind where you just do jobs and fight (like Mafia Wars), but more of a 3D RGP, like D&D type stuff or even Final Fantasy. Any good ones out there?

This morning I stupidly managed to drop my phone down the toilet. Took it to CPW and got a brand new one replaced (luckily still had insurance). One thing's that disappointed me is that all my apps have disappeared. I'm having a relapse in memory and for the life of me can't remember the apps I had installed. Anyone have any good apps to recommend? Good music players, good ebook readers, etc? Games?

Analogue to this one (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2788345/replacing-xml-in-file-from-document-in-java or http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/javax.xml.transform/WriteDom.html) I try to use it under Android. The problem is, that I can't use the suggested solution under android, because it throws java.lang.verifyError. After reading a little bit, I found out, that the class that was used to store the data to file, is not usable in android. can you suggest another solution, which is similar easy to use?

I have a widget that shows some data fetched from the Internet. I may have multiple widgets visible on the screen, each displaying some data, partly the same as the other widgets. From time to time I re-fetch the data from the Internet and update the widget views. I've modeled this in an MVC style: I have a model which I can invoke a "re-fetch-data" on, and which the views listen on. My questions:
A) Is it wise to let my model be a singleton?
B) Can I rely on that all widgets are served by the same AppWidgetProvider? Or may some of my widgets get served by a different AppWidgetProvider instance? Or, more generally: Is there any guarantee that there will be only one instance of my AppWidgetProvider? If there is only one instance of my AppWidgetProvider, then I could use an instance variable here for the model, and pass either my AppWidgetProvider or the model around where needed. Perhaps a better option?
C) In the AppWidgetProviders onUpdate method, can I be sure that the same "context" object is passed as argument each invocation?

Anyone have any recommendations for an RSS reader with a good looking widget? There are tons on the market but many of the widgets aren't customizable, don't support pictures, don't allow opening the browser, etc. I really don't want to resort to using Google Reader, just because I want to have something other than one screen.

I have just taken delivery of an Android ADP2, which I plan to use as a development platform, as well as my personal phone. I have played a bit with the on-screen keyboard and have determined that some designer must have much smaller fingers than me, so I am in the market for a keyboard/mouse that works over Bluetooth.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a class (online) or tutorial that teaches android programing for dummies? It's frustrating knowing exactly what you want to do and no idea how to do it. Something that uses basic language and explains each line in detail to help a person remember how to do it later. Any suggestions would be great.
