Android :: Multiple EditText Controls And Focus

Jun 9, 2010

I have an activity with two edittext controls. I am calling the requestFocus on the second edittext field since by default the focus goes to the first edittext control. The focus appears to be in the second edittext field (the second one gets the highlighted border), but if we try to enter any characters using the hardware keyboard the text appears in the first edittext control.

Android :: Multiple EditText Not Getting Focus - No Soft Keyboard?

Sep 2, 2009

The home screen of my Android application has three EditText views, meant to be used as three different search functions, each with a "Search" button. The app works perfectly on the device (G1) when using the trackball: I can move between the EditTexts with the trackball, all the events fire as expected, I can enter text using the physical keyboard in the selected EditText, Enter correctly submits the proper search, etc.

However, I can't switch between the EditText views using touches - only by using the trackball. Touches seem to be completely ignored by the EditText. Touches do fire for the buttons, but very hard - takes a lot of tries to make a touch register. In the simulator, clicking on any EditText does nothing - the first one always remains selected, and I never get a soft keyboard. This is all inside a TabHost - I've read there are some problems with that configuration, but it sounds like a slightly different issue (the EditText doesn't seem to lose focus - everything works perfectly with the trackball).

Android :: How To Prevent EditText From Getting Focus?

Feb 15, 2010

How can we prevent an edittext from getting focus and displaying the soft keyboard. I have an searchbox which should not be focused by default and should have focus only when user clicks on it to enter something. But right now it takes focus and shows the keyoard as soon as I open the activity. Is this a bug or can this be changed to behave in the way we want?

Android :: How To Remove Focus From Single EditText?

Oct 8, 2010

In my application I have a single EditText together with some TextViews, button and a spinner. My EditText receives focus since it is the only focusable view in this activity, I believe. My EditText shows with an orange border and cursor on the field. Now I would like to remove the focus from this field (I don't want the cursor and border to show). Is there a way to do this? I have been able to focus on the button by doing button.seFocusableInTouchMode() and button.requestFocus(). But this highlights the button and is obviously not what I want.

And in ScrollView, when I touch the EditText, keyboard was appeared and EditText keep the focus. But I must optimize the list because the list may has many items. In ListView, I can optimize list in getView. But in ScrollVIew, there was not way to optimaize list. So, I must use ListView.

Android :: Blank Screen Appear When EditText Get Focus In IDPI Mode

Oct 10, 2010

I found that when EditText in placing at the bottom of screen, and the activity's android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustPan", and the apps run in ldpi(240*320) mode, then when EditText has focus, the content of the activity is panned too far to the above, thus leaving a blank screen between the content of the window and the soft input panel.

You can see the screenshot of this problem at
https://sites.google.com/site/wilderwang/android
Also, the source code to repro this problem can also be get at
https://sites.google.com/site/wilderwang/android

When I test further, if the same apps run in hdpi(480*800), when EditText got focus, the content of the window panned too small thus causing the soft input window cover the EditText view. It seems the distance of the window panned not compute the screen density.

Android : Deal With Multiple Screensizes + Dynamic Controls In Droid?

Apr 23, 2010

I am learning how to program on Android phone. However I am unsure how to make my application work for the different screen sizes and resolutions.

I read the tutorial on the android site and still unsure how to do it.

First I know there are different files so could make a layout for each of the sizes but my problem is most of the screen needs to be dynamically created so there would not be much to put in these files.

So I am not sure how to android to re size dynamic controls based on the screen size.

I have also read it is bad practice to make controls in anything but the xml file as it separates view logic and programming logic. However they never talk about if you need to make these controls dynamically what you should do.

So is there some other way to do it that is considered good practice?

Edit

I get this error when I try to run the switcher application.

To your question: It's dynamic because
the buttons in my example grow and
shrink depending on one of the 3
possibles sizes, because they use
scaled pixel (You probably know that
you don't have to deal with screen
sizes itself). So a scaled pixel
compared to a real a pixel has a size
of 0.75px, 1.0px or 1.5px. Android
automatically and dynamically adjusts
it to the actual size. So you don't
have to care about this in your code.

So if I use scaled pixels then I don't have to worry about different screen sizes?

At the moment I don't know an example
except in games where you have to deal
with "real" pixel. But if you want use
it, multiply it with the value of the
current density. This is your "ratio".
I don't have the example with the ball
anymore but I have another which uses
the same technics. You can run it on
different screen sizes and you will
see that the buttons will always fit
into the layout. You could use the
same technics for your intents. In
this example you can scroll with the
"Scrn" buttons from one view to
another of 4 views. (At the moment
they all have a black background so
you don't see that they are different
views). The "Enter" button exits the
test. It's an Eclipse project. You can
download

So if I want to deal with ratio then I use real pixels and not scaled pixels? What advantage does this give me?

will scaled pixels work with changing from portrait to landscape( ie will it fill up the new found space)?

Finally should I make the controls now through code or is there another way? As I said I am getting data from a webservice that must look like this

checkbox label label

It can be one record or 10,000 records I don't know so these have to be appended to something that is like a window panel( the controls in there get a scroll bar).

Motorola Droid X :: Auto Focus - Click To Focus

Aug 29, 2010

I loved the camera on the Eris and the Incredible, not only did they have a whole lot more of a crisp high-res detail, the auto-focus absolutely rocked. With my droid x, I can be getting a little artsy and focus on an object with the crosshair but it'll take me 20 tries to get it to lock on, its insane, I know I'm not getting too close to my subject because it will definitely eventually focus on that object if I try over and over and over again. It's not just close ups that I find myself and my buddy with this issue either. macro shooting mode does not help. My buddie's droid X has the same exact behaviors. Eris and incredible just LOCKED ON first try with even very low contrast / detail subjects, on top of that, have a ton better camera GUI when it comes to "click to focus". I know this thing ain't no SLR but, blows me away of how terrible the camera performance is vs. the HTC android based devices. Ihink motorola will fix this? I know this thing ain't no SLR but it just blows me away how the HTC android devices camera performance (except for video) blows the Droid X away.

Android :: To Make EditText Look Like TextView But Still Behave Like EditText

May 17, 2009

I want an EditText to look like TextView but still behave like EditText. I've tried applying TextView style to my EditText in my layout.xml file, like this:

CODE:............

But I get an error within xml editor: "Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'style' with value '@android:style/ Widget_TextView')." It is strange because @android:style/ Widget_TextView definitively exists - I double checked it in code via android.R.style.Widget_TextView. Another strange thing is that I don't get android:style offered in the xml editor while typing? There is android:id, android:text and everything else.. but not android:style?

I consider the hard way (making EditText look like TextView) to be: extending EditText and overriding it's onDraw method.

Android :: Android - EditText And Button - When Click Button - Unfocus EditText And Hide Soft Keyboard

Jun 24, 2010

CODE:............

I have this at the top of my application. When the application starts, the EditText is orange highlighted and has a cursor in it; when the EditText is tapped, the soft keyboard pops up. The user uses it to type into the EditText.

However, when they click the Button, my onClick method fires and does everything it's supposed to, however the soft keyboard stays on screen and the EditText is still highlighted with its cursor.

I also have, at the top of the Button onclick: findViewById(R.id.name).clearFocus();

In spite of this, the EditText does not seem to clear its focus. How do I make the button actually act as if it is submitting the form?

Also, I do not transition to a different Activity on the click of the Button. I suppose that is the typical case, and probably the reason why they don't bother hiding the keyboard. However I want to keep the search box and button at the top of the screen, so I just dynamically fill and add views to the screen when the Button is pressed. How can I achieve my desired behavior?

Android :: Pros - Cons Of Multiple Activities In An App Vs One Activity - Multiple Views

Aug 16, 2010

Are there design guidelines to help decide if an application with multiple views should be designed with multiple activities or just one activity and control the back button itself.

I've tried both. My most complex applications using one activity per screen. However, now that I'm successfully written an app with just one activity and handling the back button myself, I don't see any compelling reason to use multiple activities. The one activity application is much simpler and more straightforward.

What advantages of multiple activities am I missing?

I really miss that since I'm trying to use my Droid as my main music player now, but I hate that I have to click a widget or go to notifications to change the music. Especially when I'm driving, its would be so much easier if the controls popped up above the lock screen so i don't have to unlock every time. Any thoughts?
