Android :: Listview Not Supporting If List Extends Screen Size
Oct 20, 2010
I created a list view in an activity and the list shows some fields.When we click a list item a custom dialog should pop up and the user can enter some new value to this field.The custom dialog contains one edit text and two buttons ok and cancel.It is working fine.But when my list is more that means if it exceeds screen size it is showing scroll.But when we select bottom items which we can select using scroll the dialog is appearing in normal fashion.But after entering new value if i am trying to save the application is getting crashed.

I have a listview with custom rows and that extends SimpleAdapter.
Each row consist of two linear layouts : 1st having two textviews of which one is hidden in horizontal orientation, second having two textviews in horizontal orientation.
Now depending on the value in hidden textview , I want to setcolor for the remaining items for the row.
To put it as simple:
each listview item has some custom colors the value of which comes from the hidden field.
I have done this by overriding getview() for the simpleadapter and returning view for each, but this makes list very slow to render (and that I think is obvious as so much of work for each view before showing it).
Can I do this in some more efficient way ? like making views and then add up to list instead of using xml layout maybe one solution OR any other?

I am building a android aplication which will be consuming a json file from the internet. This json file contains a list of news from a particular website. Each json object contains information such like title, summary, descripition and web links for the news thumbnail and the original image.
I will be displaying in a listview three information: the news thumbnail, the title and the summary. Here resides my problem. I dont want to load all thumbnails from the internet if they wont be displayed. What I am trying to say is that why download a thumbnail from the 30th news if the user wont scroll down the image. So, i will, initially only download the thumnails from those news that are being displayed in the screen and when the user scrolls down to see more news, as soon as the list item appers to the screen i want to download the image and then display.
Is there a way to achieve this? Is it possible to find out if the list item is on the screen? I have been searching all over the internet for a solution for this but i am running out of ideas.

I've read the Android documentation:
http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
but still have some questions. I'm trying to design a music application which basically has images of the instrument (ImageButton) that play a sound when clicked. However, I'm confused about how to have the ImageButtons scale to fit all the different screen sizes and how to position them.
Which layout is best used for needing to position ImageButtons in specific locations on the screen? (i.e. cymbals on a drum set) FrameLayout, RelativeLayout? If I only really care about medium and large screens, do I need to create different resources (images) for both as well as a different XML layout to position them? I'm trying to find the simplest way to do this without having to create a separate layout XML file for positioning/size and separate image resources for each screen.

I have had several emails from people with HTC Tattoo devices who say they cannot find my app in the Market.
After reading this page (http://d.android.com/guide/practices/ screens_support.html) I believe I have to add the <supports-screens> tag to my manifest file. However, when I try to do this I am confronted with "Error no resource identifier found for attriute support-screens in package 'android'" messages. What does one have to do to update their manifest to tell the market an app supports all screen sizes?
Furthermore, if I need to change the android:minSdkVersion from "3" to something higher or add the android:targetSdkVersion tag, will this prevent people with older versions of Android from using my application?

I'm building a game with graphic assets in hdpi resolutions (hence I put the files in drawable-hdpi directory). I don't want to have a corresponding mdpi resolution of the images, and I will code everything in 240-dpi based pixel coordinates.
Is it possible to still allow mdpi and ldpi devices to run the application, by automatically scaling the graphics from the hdpi version? Optimize for high-dpi devices only but still support (small- and) medium-dpi screens.

I have a fairly complex activity the parent being a linearlayout with a table with some basic info and buttons. Then a couple listviews that the user can add items to. So these listviews grow more and more as the user uses the app. The problem I'm running into is the Linearlayout is bigger then the resolution of the screen and so it needs to scroll. So the scrolling doesn't work on the Listviews. I've tried playing with changing the layout_height of the listview and its child element with no success. Is there a way to make these couple listviews expand out to the amount of children? Or am I going about this all wrong? If so what other controls can I use?

I have 2 ways of displaying ListView data. I have a class for each type of row. I do not create the rows in an xml layout. (Each row is derived from View and does custom drawing). When I switch from 1 type of row to another how do I get the ListView to layout properly with the correct row heights, and refresh? Is View.forceLayout() on the right track?

I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels.Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?

I like using K9 Mail, but I was wondering if there was a way to change the size of the messages listed in the in box or any IMAP folder. 10-and-a-half messages (with the subject on one line and sender on another) are displayed on my Moment's screen. While I like seeing all of these messages, it is not very finger-friendly. It is difficult to tap precisely on a given message. Is there any way to increase the size of the message list? Something like the default Gmail or Android e-mail app would be great. I have dug through the preferences of K9, but so far haven't found anything other than being able to change the theme of the app.

I'm using ListView to display images which I provide through an ImageAdapter class. it works great on my device (and on many other devices which I tested it on), but somehow when I'm using the emulator and I'm long-pressing the up/down button - I'm getting an outOfMemory error after 10-15 seconds.
I tried clearing cache, canceling cache, etc. - nothing helped.
I know this crash is pretty rare (i couldn't reproduced it on any "real" device), but I can see on DDMS that "GC freed" are getting bigger during that long press and I can't find a way to clear them.

The way I want it is, per row there will be a text and is followed by a right arrow button, so that the user can click on that button to edit the content of that row. If the user is using the keypad, by using the left and right buttons on the keypad, he should be able to select the textview or the Button in that particular row. I have seen this in a couple of apps. The way I see that working on those apps appear as if they are maintaining two lists in parallel.
The reason i felt it this way is, if I am on row 1 of the list and if I press the right key on the phone keypad, then the right arrow button will get highlighted and now if I use the down key or if I keep pressing the down key, then the focus will scroll through that arrow button only as if that is an another parallel list constructed. I don't know if that is a good way to do it. I tried many for getting this to work, but couldn't succeed.

I have a listview from an SQLDatabase using custom CursorAdaptor. I would like to go back to the activity that I used to create the items when I click on them in the listview. So that I can edit the entries. But nothing happen when I implement the OnItemClick method and the getItemId() on the CursorAdapter even though am not sure I am correct there. Here is my Code:
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> adapview, View view, int position, long rowId) {
Cursor c = adapter.retrieveRow(rowId); // retrieve row from Database
Intent edit = new Intent(this,NewItem.class);
edit.putExtra(DBAdapter.KEY_ID, rowId);
edit.putExtra(DBAdapter.Title, c.getString(c.getColumnIndex(DBAdapter.Title)));
edit.putExtra(DBAdapter.DATE, c.getString(c.getColumnIndex(DBAdapter.DATE)));
startActivity(edit); } public long getItemId(int id){ return id; }

I've got the following main.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <AbsoluteLayout
android:id="@+id/widget0" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >
<ListView android:id="@+id/listview" android:layout_width="315px"
android:layout_height="379px" android:layout_x="2px" android:layout_y="50px" >
</ListView> <TextView android:id="@+id/title" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Select device:" android:textSize="17sp"
android:layout_x="-2px" android:layout_y="1px" >
</TextView> <Button android:id="@+id/refresh" android:layout_width="109px"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Refresh" android:layout_x="209px android:layout_y="7px" >
</Button> </AbsoluteLayout>
The main class does nothing but drawing the layout. I've got the following class and layout for the listitems:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="10dp" android:textSize="16sp" >
</TextView> package com.android.bluetoothp2p;
import android.app.ListActivity; import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View; import android.widget.AdapterView;
import android.widget.AdapterView.OnItemClickListener; import android.widget.ArrayAdapter;
import android.widget.ListView; import android.widget.TextView;
import android.widget.Toast;
public class BTListView extends ListActivity {
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, COUNTRIES)); ListView lv = getListView();
lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true); lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
// When clicked, show a toast with the TextView text
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), ((TextView) view).getText(),
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } } ); }
Countries is just an array with a list of countries, some dummy values. Now, how do I make the list items of the BTListView class go in the ListView (with @+id/listview) of the main class? Now my list works, but it isn't clickable anymore. This is the code:
ListView lv = getListView(); lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true);
lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
// When clicked, show a toast with the TextView text
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "lolwat", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
} } );
