Android :: Latitude Crashes Google Maps - 1.5
Mar 1, 2010
Few days ago my HTC Magic (Android 1.5) started to behave strange. Google Maps application crashes when I am trying to enter Latitude. Hard reset cleaning cache of the Maps application helps to start it (applications starts and works flawless), but when I am trying "to join Latitude" it shows progress bar "Loading friends", then application crashes. After that I can not even start Maps. Exception browser shows: java.lang.NullPointerException: Name cannot be null
Not sure whether I can debug Google experience application to find out what's going wrong.

Is Google Latitude available in the UK or not, because it doesn't seem to be working for me? I have received the RC9 update for G1 and have Google Maps 3.0. Is there an a Google Latitude application that I should have or do I access everything through Google Maps? When I go the www.google.com/latitude on my G1, it offers me the option of "launching" Latitude but it just takes me to Google Maps. From there, I cannot see the locations of my Google "friends" (who have agreed to show location), neither does my own location show up on the Latitude homepage on the web (I have settings turned to "detect my location automatically").

I know HTC have added their own 'offline' maps application, which I am quite interested in, I am however wondering if plain old Google Maps, Navigation and most of all Latitude are still present / working?

I'm currently writing an app displaying a MapView showing a google map. I used the "hello map view" tutorial from http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html and this works so far: the map is displayed, centered and zoomed correctly, even the OverlayItems I added are displayed correctly. But when I click on one of those overlay items I added, the application crashes with a null pointer exception:

I used to really love the Latitude interface, when I clicked on a friend in Latitude, I got a screen with many options, including Navigate to, send text, etc.
One really cool feature on this screen was "what's nearby" which showed stores etc. that were near my friend.
Also, the background was black and the text was white.
NOW (after the last update): I lost the "what's nearby" feature AND the background is white and the text is black.
What can I do? Is there a way to revert maps to the older release?

It used to work fine but about 3 months ago it had just stopped updating on either of our phones. I have a friend on my friends list and his latitude position updates on my phoned fine (although her has disappeared also in the last few days also). The only way I can get too see my wifes location oon my phone is for her to open google maps on her phone to update her position. The same is true for her to see my location on her phone. No settings have been changed so I don't know what had happened, does anyone know how to fix this bug?

Folks there is a nice new app called *** Latitude Update *** on Google Market, that lets you update Google Latitude as frequent as you want (even when Google's own app is down), see your locations history on map etc

I just bought the HTC Wildfire but I cannot login to my google account to use latitude. When I enter my email and password it says xxxxxxx@something.be does not use gmail and then it suggests alternatives ending at gmail.com.I do not wish to create a new gmail account, I simply want to use the same email and password that I also use on my computer to login to google and latitude and so on. I can see latitude under this account on my pc but can't login to it with the wildfire because it keeps moaning about this gmail.

When I bring up my friends list in google latitude, I can NEVER see my profile pic, although it shows up on my friend's maps no problem, and it also shows up when I sign in to latitude on my desktop... WTF? Also it seems to be displaying different pics for some friends on my phone then it does on my desktop. This is all happening on my MOto DROID-- and btw everything else seems to be working fine with it. Anybody else notice this?

Ever since the RC33 update where the new Maps version came out with Latitude included....my Latitude acct has been...well...off.
I'm running my GPS when Maps is used...rather than a triangulation method w/ the towers. However...there have been QUITE a few occurances where Latitude shows me in a totally different STATE. I live in metro Atlanta, but apparently, I spend a lot of time at a country club near DFW in Texas. Once, I was going down the road...started up Maps, and it was tracing me going up an interstate in a city 120 miles away from me. At the time, I was no where NEAR an interstate...but Maps was showing my movement second by second.
This is rather irritating. Google developed the O/S, they developed Latitude...yet Latitude seems to work fine on other phones OTHER than the G1. Upon reading up on Google's Help Forums...I'm not the only one with problems when it comes to Latitude and Android.

I've been struggling with the runOnFirstFix() method for quite a long time. And maybe the problem is in that first line that says Running deferred on first fix. Android Maps Library throws NullPointerException when animateTo is executed while a dialog is shown. The thing is, when the first fix gets executed and I am displaying some dialog in that moment, it crashes quite frequently. I've extracted the following from the logcat:
I/Maps.MyLocationOverlay( 2425): Running deferred on first fix: com.MyApp.Map$2@43aef8e8

How much have people played around with this app? I find it both amazing and scary. Only had it running a couple of days, but very curious to see it mapping my location history. Has anyone tried the so called "routine" learning features, where it alerts you if a friend comes within range when your outside your routine locations? How long did it take to suss out your routine?
I love the idea of this thing coming onstream just as the festival season kicks off. "Navigate to Jennie" is going to a lot of fun in a big crowd! But then won't Latitude be constantly alerting me everyday of the festival? Could get annoying! But I love the idea of going out on a night and using latitude for everyone to meet up. The only snag is the map scales we have currently aren't detailed enough to make it really useful. But what other uses have people found for it? Another thing I don't understand is that Google My Tracks and Latitude seem to duplicate their functionality a bit - why do they overlap them? Latitude could really be a lot of fun. Or a lot of trouble. Any opinions?

I have the moto droid and my girl has the eris. I was trying to get latitude to work on her eris, but when you click menu when in google maps and you hit latitude, nothing happens. All the other icons works, e.g. when I tap my location it takes me to the current location on google maps. I even tried downloading google maps again and setting up latitude and requesting her to join latitude but it says 'i already have latitude - launch it' which again, doesn't work.

I use Google Latitude with several friends, but have noticed that when I run it in the background, my last know location on the friends phone shows where I "stopped" but never updates. Example: I leave my house with Google Maps/Latitude running and decide I want to listen to DroidLive. Once I switch to DroidLive it appears that Latitude stops broadcasting my locations and my friends see that I'm in the middle of a highway for 30-40 minutes until I kill my music and go back to the maps. Is this a known "bug" or is it something that just doesn't work? I thought that the processes would continue to work, but I might be wrong. I also notice that when launching another app while in Google Maps that my GPS indicator also stops until I get back into the Maps.
