Android :: Killing Apps All Time?
May 26, 2010
I'm a new Droid Eris user and I am constantly having to kill my apps in order to free up memory to keep my lag time and speed adequate. Will I continue to have to do this throughout the life of my phone? Why if I kill the Apps with Advanced Task Killer do the apps keep activating?

I am considering getting a Motorola Milestone, which should ship with Android 2.something.I have a Nokia, and I really like the multitasking of the Symbian environment. How is it going to be different with Android? Is it a true multitasking os like Symbian or is it not, like the iphone? How do I switch from one application to another? Is there a button which shows all running apps? I read comments that, on some phones, switching from the web browser to another app and then back to the browser causes the page to reload from scratch. Is this still true or was it a limitation of older versions? Is there a task killer? I read very contradicting opinions on this, but I must say I do not understand why I should leave open an app I don't need, and how much an app left open uses system resources (battery life and RAM): I would have thought that its impact on system performance might have been minimal, but still > 0, right? Then why not close it altogether? Or am I missing something here?

There are some apps like the NASCAR one that I will never need. Is it a problem to kill apps that are pre-installed on the EVO using ATK or one of the file/task manager apps? Any apps I should not kill for stability reasons?

I just installed Froyo tonight and reinstalled my apps and use Advanced Task Killer free and when I kill my apps it seems as though I always have some running or they will start running without me doing anything. I have News and Weather, Slacker, Voice search, and Skype mobile running and when I click on KILL selected apps It leaves Voice search running. If I click Kill again Slacker, News and weather and voice search are running. Why are these apps running when I'm not actually running them? Any ideas?

Is there any way to hide apps from the drawer but WITHOUT killing those apps
-Rooted
-also tried "Go Launcher" but its very easy to unhide it from menu no protection at all
-Tried "Hide it Pro" = Killing the apps
-Tried "ccswe app manager" = same killing the apps
I need Password Protected Manager To "HIDE" the apps icons only while "Keep them Running in background"

I have an EVO and I have a problem with it. I downloaded the app Advanced Task Killer to take care of apps running in the background. However sometimes when I pull it up I find that things like Sprint Navigation, Qik, Voice Dialer, and sometimes others are running without me pulling them up. My question is, how do I keep these apps from doing this, because they kill my battery when they come on and I don't know it?

I have tried 3 different task killers but each one do not seem to be killing the task even though it says it is. When i open the "killed" apps, they open to the last screen before they were killed. I am using the froyo ROM. On 2.1, when the apps were killed and then re-opened them, it always went back to the main screen.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which applications I should avoid/uninstall to try to conserve some battery. For example, does it use up a ton of battery to have location aware apps running or is it pretty nominal?

The app Clean Master claims it can extend battery life and device performance by killing apps--even offering a button to kill all apps. I thought killing apps was unnecessary since Android does this automatically when RAM is full and that killing apps manually actually drains battery life. What's the deal? Is swiping an app away from the Recent Apps List the same as killing an app? I currently do this often because the list is usually packed.

I downloaded advanced task killer and select all the extra apps that I want to stop running however I can clearly see from the status bar that the app is still running. Things like brightness slider and stuff. Greenify seemed to actually really work but since I'm not rooted I cannot use that anymore.

I want to change the limit android uses for killing apps when ram isn't enough. Now it seems to kill apps when free ram is less than ~30MB and i want to set it to 15 for example.

May seem like a dumb question but I constantly keep an eye on what apps are running to conserve battery life. It got me thinking if I stopped any running app before plugging in the charger, would it will make the battery charge any quicker??

Simple question. Is there an app out there, that is NOT a battery hog, and keeps services off...OR is there a way to get rid of the bloatware on the SF WITHOUT rooting?

I've been using a Task killer without problem since I got the Desire but since yesterday when reading through one of the threads on here and downloading a load of stuff the Task Killer has started behaving badly, I've tried two different Task Killers and they're both doing the same.
When killing some apps the screen seems to restart, like it killed the Sense UI but I've put all the system processes on the ignore list.

When I turn on my Captivate, it automatically opens AT&T Hot Spots, AT&T Navigator, IM, Email and about a dozen other apps. Is there any way to limit the apps that open automatically so that I don't have to use Task Killer every time to kill unwanted apps?

My DroidX has several pieces of bloatware from Verizon or Motorola. I don't mind giving up a little Ram space for them, but many are running all of the time. After you kill them they come back to life. Why does Music, Maps, SkypeMobile, CityId etc. need to run when I haven't even started them? I "assume" that they are just waiting until the end of a time period (an hour I hope rather than a second) to check if the need to "call home". If they are doing much they are eating battery time which isn't as good as I would like. I realize that I would have to root my Droid to remove the apps. Is there an easier ways to keep them from running?

I like to listen to live fire dept dispatch, and then be able to go to Google Maps, while the audio is still going, to look up addresses. Is there a way to do this? As soon as I leave the dispatch/web screen, the audio stops. How do I do this? I know there's got to be a way to have multiple apps going at the same time right.

For some reason if I open Advanced Task Killer I have like 8-12 apps running all the time. They're random too, many that aren't attached to widgets. An example is gesture search. I feel like this is eating up my battery.

I have multiple applications which fetch data from emails, rss feeds, twitter, facebook, etc. For exemple, my Tweetcaster fetch data each 60 minutes, Feedly each 60 minutes, K9 each 60 minutes for all accounts, etc. Is there a way to make applications to sync/fetch all at the same time ?
I was watching a Google I/O session on YouTube, which was very interesting. The bottom line is, to save battery, you should sync everything at the same time, so one big cookie instead of multiple small cookies through the day. Therefore, I am looking for a way to force my applications to sync all together at the same time.

I've got an application that has (among other things) three Activities, let's call them A, B, and C. A is the main navigation point for the entire application, and launches B and C directly using startActivity(). They work fine that way. However, when I call C from inside B, I get a strange problem. The code for launching Activity C is exactly the same in both places. The problem is the hardware back button. In the emulator, it takes two presses of the back button in order to close Activity C and come back to B. On a G1, it takes 3 or 4 presses. Upon seeing this, I implemented the usual suspects in C - onPause(), onStop(), and onDestroy(), and onResume() in B. When I press the back button from C and it doesn't work, I get onPause(), onStop(), onDestroy () - in that order, but nothing happens. When it works (on press 3 or 4 on the G1), I get onPause(), then onResume() in B, then onStop() and onDestroy().
I've tried catching the key press of the back button and calling finish (), but that doesn't make a difference. Has anyone seen this? To pre-empt some questions: All C does is display some data. There are no threads or any other special resources that C might have an active handle to that's preventing it from closing. But out of curiosity, if it did, how would I detect that? Any ideas for further diagnostics here?

I'm in the process of re-installing my apps, trying to find a culprit that might be keeping my phone awake - and was wondering if anyone else thinks they've found some guilty parties. So far the only app I've installed is the HTC Battery widget. Everything else is stock from the 2.1 leak. I'll probably put the official rom on there eventually (especially if I still can't fix the awake problem), but since it doesn't seem to be any different, I'm not in a hurry. Now, my phone seems to be going right to sleep when I press the end button. My awake time is a fraction of the up time.I just started using the Seido extended life battery (1750 I think), and I've put the phone through some heavy use - a one hour phone call using bluetooth, several other shorter calls, some instant messaging, lots of texts, some internet use and camera use. And I've not charged it since leaving the house. So far, I'm at 57% - which far exceeds anything I've experienced before 2.1, and before the extended battery. Right now I'm looking at all-day use with the phone - which is ideal. My issue is that I want to prevent the phone from staying awake again. 100% awake time always seems to cut my battery life in half, if not more. There doesn't seem to be a clean way for me to do this. Even after I uninstall all of my applications, the problem doesn't seem to correct itself until I restore the phone to factory settings. For this reason - it's hard to pin down which application (or setting) might be the culprit.
