Is there anything the Dalvik VM supports (in terms of bytecode) which is not used currently because the .class files don't have it?
As an example, if people would write their own Source-to-DX converter for their functional language XYZ, would they be able to implement e. g. full tail calls although the .class file does support tail calls only under certain circumstances?

When I type ImageView or AnimationDrawable I get a string of errors proclaiming:
AnimationDrawable cannot be resolved to a type.
line 14 Java Problem
I don't understand, do I need to create another class? Or do the AnimationDrawables just not go in the filename.java?
And if I do need to create another class, can you show me how?

How can I detect whether or not an Image View has a picture in it upon a button click. I had a class that displays a picture and some results, but I don't want the user to be able to access those results (pushing the button) until the results have been written to that class.
So, I figured I needed to check to see if there was a picture displayed in the ImageView yet.
So something like:
CODE:...............
But obviouslt R.id.photoResultView == null isn't the right way to do it...anyone know how?
EDIT: Line 184

I'm coming over from C# where I can make a namespace and then have each class placed into its own .cs file if I want, but in all of the examples I've seen for android all of the methods and classes are all in one big java file.
Is it possible to put my classes in to their own java files and then import those classes into a main program java file as needed like I do in C#?

In Visual Studio, I can obtain a succinct list of public methods/members exposed in a class for which I do not have the source (i.e. bundled inside a DLL) by pressing F12 (GoToDefinition).
Similarly, I am learning the Android API - in Eclipse. Jumping to an Android framework method definition produces decompilation output which is not intuitive to read, and is very verbose. To mimic results like Visual Studio, I am considering several options:
How can I format the decompilation output to be 'cleaner' - I have looked through Eclipse's preferences menus and have not found a way to do this.
How do I 'add corresponding source files' once Google provides it, so that jumping to definition yields the actual definition?
Is there a plugin that does this already? I looked into Jadclipse, but that project has not been updated in several years, and is still a decompiler.

I'm working on a project that includes a test system for OEM devices. The supporting infrastructure is complete, however I'm having difficulties getting ROMs to run on the emulator. Of course the AVDs generated by the SDK work fine, but my next step is to run a binary intended for an OEM device. I understand that the emulator would require different drivers than a physical device, so I can't simply drop the same binary onto it and expect it to run.
Tweaking the AVDs generated by the SDK is about the limit of my knowledge. I've looked into pulling the system.img and other partitions from the ROM with ones from the emulator, but that doesn't work since the emulated hardware doesn't match what the drivers expect. I assume some modifications to qemu and some reverse engineering of the OEM ROM might be required to obtain my goal.
Assuming I have access to the binaries (but not the source) used by an OEM to construct their ROMs, what would be involved to obtain an emulator that matches the physical device, so I can run the compiled ROM on the emulator?

So recently, I found a flashable zip for a stock LG keyboard. I do have a problem though, when I use the keyboard, I have an annoying and useless T9 button and I want to move/resize some buttons.
Would it be possible to modify the apk from the zip to achieve what I am trying to go at? I prefer this keyboard than any other keyboard because this is the closest to the LG P690 stock keyboard in terms of speed I could find to the original, and this is what I'm accustomed to.
What I'm trying to achieve is:
1.) I want to remove the T9 button, settings button and comma on the first layout.
2.) Move the comma into the symbol layout and move the keys according to the sample layout.
3.) I also need to let the spacebar fill the space the removed buttons used to take up.

This is for an Android application but I'm broadening the question to Java as I don't know how this is usually implemented. Assuming you have a project that targets a specific SDK version. A new release of the SDK is backward incompatible and requires changing three lines in one class. How is this managed in Java without duplicating any code(or by duplicating the least amount)?
I don't want to create two projects for only 3 lines that are different. What I'm trying to achieve in the end is a single executable that'll work for both versions. In C/C++, you'd have a #define based on the version. How do I achieve the same thing in Java?

I think I have a pretty easy problem to solve, but I have been beating my head against the wall for hours trying to get past it! I have an adapter that loads a list of URLS:
adapter=new MyAdapter(this, lStrings);
list.setAdapter(adapter);
The list of URLS looks like this:
private String[] lStrings={
"http://www.domain.com/file1.jpg",
"http://www.domain.com/file2.jpg",
"http://www.domain.com/file3.jpg",
};
What I want instead is to load these values from a text file that lies on the SD card. For that matter, I would be okay with loading the values from a text file into a String, and then load the String into the list as I imagine that would be the "cleaner approach". However, all attempts to do this have failed. For instance, I replaced the above snippet with this:
private String[] lStrings=
{ MainActivity.this.getString(R.string.myurllist) };
but then I get a Forced Close on loading.
I'm a bit new to Java, Android, and development in general.

I am new at android development and java programming, but I have decided to program a drinking game app in android. This app basically simulates a deck a cards, a player clicks a button to draw a card then based on the card thats drawn the player plays a drinking game (ie takes 1 drink, takes 2 drinks ect).
I have the main program in one java file, and the code that shuffles the card deck and puts the card sequence in an array in other java file. My problem is that whenever a class from the other java file (classicMode.java) is called from the main program (fubar.java), my android program crashes and gives the error : "The application Drinking Game - FUBAR (process com.games.dg) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". Code...

I am loving my Eris and looking forward to the Dec 11 update.
I am just wondering if the auto-suggest dictionary is user-modifiable. I use compact QWERTY (like SureType on BB). When I type "we", what comes out is "qe" which is the default word it wants to use. Perhaps I used it once and saved it? How can I delete the words I don't want popping up anymore (especially the ones I may have added)?

What I did was create two .java files. One that can compile and run on a 1.5 phone (SDK3) and then one that works on 2.0(SDK5) So for this example i'll call the 1.5 file ExampleOld and the new one Example. I was wondering if i just made activity like this if it would work sort of like a "portal" and pick the activity to load depending on the SDK so there is no crash or compile errors. Are there any changes I should make to my code? Maybe anyone out there that's had to do this before.

This is because these classes are private APIs . now please tell me is there any way like compiling source code or importing private class file into android.jar so that i can use this private APIs.

I have a KML file for example with the following in it:

The docs at http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/ddms.html seem to indicate that I only need to launch my app and fire up DDMS and load the KML. That doesn't work.
I even tried the Google Earth solution suggested at the same link.
I'm using SDK 1.5_r2. I am doing something wrong or missing something?

Doing Android 2.1 development. Can anybody explain to me why the following code generates a IOException and doesn't load the file? This exact code used to work, and as far as I can tell, it should still work. For reference, the Log.d() command correctly lists all files that I expect, and the files are correctly zipped into my .APK file.
CODE:........
Any ideas on why this breaks now? The files I'm trying to read are tiny (couple of bytes) binaries.
