Android :: Is There Weather App That Doesn't Run Constantly In Background?
Feb 11, 2010
I really like the Weather Channel App and Weatherbug, but they both constantly start themselves and run in the background no matter what my settings are.I don't need my phone to update weather in the background as I don't check it that often.I just want something that I can open, check the weather and CLOSE really close. Is there a decent Weather App that will let me close it and not run on its own?Seems to me that its a common problem with apps, that many devs don't properly shut them down or force them to run unnecessarily.

I don't know if this is the right group, but my ADT keeps crashing while editing layout files. I'm not positive, but I think it might have something to do with the background images that I'm attempting to use, as they are not rendered in the preview at all. Is this the appropriate group to discuss the ADT tools? If so, does anyone else have problems getting background images to display?

Got my Desire this week as a free upgrade from Orange, really impressed with it and glad i resisted from getting the iPhone. Anyway a question if anyone can answer, why doesn't the weather animation constantly play/scroll, it only does it once when you turn on, up to now(this week) its been sunny/cloudy so only seen the clouds scroll across the screen once but you don't see them again. My brother has an HTC but i don't know which one apart from its a Windows OS not android and his constantly scrolls. Is the android OS different than the Windows or do i need to activate something in the menus?

I had a 2 hour drive yesterday, and I guess it pulled the weather update about an hour into my drive for the current location. Well it still thinks I'm there, even today, and even after I restarted the phone. I also have gone to menu > update, but it just updates the weather, not the location. GPS is also turned on. This is not the first time it has done this, and there is no possible way I'm anywhere near that city for it to be confused...
Anyone else have this problem? Solutions?

I have written a very simple game with some simple animations, but I've noticed that when the phone checks email, or several other apps are running, the animations that update in my thread start behaving slowly or choppy. This is a problem as the game mechanic requires some careful timing of your screen touches based on the animations. So if it starts behaving erratically, the game doesn't really work well - and isn't much fun.
Is there a way to prevent this? Can my threads have a higher priority when they need to run?

I have a listactivity as a startup screen in my application. Which is displaying database records using custom cursor adapter. On create I set the filterable flag - getListView().setTextFilterEnabled(true)
My cursoradapter overrides runQueryOnBackgroundThread which runs corresponding query. The problem is that after typing some text and hitting enter, runQueryOnBackgroundThread never gets called. However, when the item click in the same view launches another activity(detail view of the record) and I come back to the original list activity, hitting back button, then text filtering works just fine. I don't call setTextFilterEnabled anywhere except during the initialization process and I can't really find any other API affecting this behavior, so any guesses why text filtering doesn't work initially, but all of the sudden starts working when I come back to the list activity from child activity?

The weather just suddenly stopped working yesterday. I didn't change anything. I turned off the phone and back on, still with the same problem. I use wifi on it everyday, so I assume it would update but doesn't.

I have a ListView containing a few different type of items, all having their own background image and font color. In my first implementation I implemented each type of item as its own layout with the background image etc defined in XML (and implemented Adapter.getView() so that it only reuses convertView if it's of the correct type). This works fine but the performance is not that great while scrolling since I'm inflating quite a few Views due to convertView mismatches, so instead I tried using the same layout for all items (to benefit fully from convertView reuse) and changing the background image and font size in runtime. I even keep the three background Drawables I need as members to save time decoding them from a resource for each item, and call View.setBackgroundDrawable() from Adapter.getView(). The problem is, sometimes the 9-patch is not correctly wrapped around the content of the list item when using this approach. While scrolling it usually looks correct but when the scrolling stops, or sometimes when I just tap anywhere on the list, the background 9-patch of some large items starts flickering and is either cropped or resized to its original PNG size rather than stretched to wrap the content.
First of all, I suspect this is a bug? Any ideas why this happens? Could it be that the View is not always measured to reflect the changed content when the 9-patch is applied? I have tried adding an extra call to View.invalidate() but it doesn't solve the problem. Second, does this approach sound reasonable at all, or how should I go about to optimize this scenario?

I've downloaded Beautiful Widget and have the temp and clock on the homescreen. My question is, when you click on the widget, it doesn't bring you to a full weather program like weatherchannel or weatherbug? Meaning like, in the "stock" weather widgets, if you click on them while open, it brings u into a weather program where you then have the option to look at a closer look or detailed forecast.

I'm having a problem with the clock/weather widget on my Hero. I have it set to Current City and I noticed the other day that the weather wasn't updating. ( I live in Long Beach, CA) It was stuck on one weather. I especially noticed when it still said partly sunny at 11pm. It doesn't work even if i try to manually update.
I thought it was just the current city function that was having trouble registering but when I go to other cities nearby it updates fine. And when I specifically set it to Long Beach, CA, it was still stuck and not updating.
Anyone else having this problem? Is there something wrong with the weather equipment in Long Beach?

My htc hero can't seem to keep apps running in the background, save for a few, such as the engadget app. when I press home from the internet browser or the PDF viewer and try to get back into the application, the internet browser will resend info to get the page I was on back and the PDF viewer will restart just like the browser and end up in a PDF file I wasn't in before. It seems that the applications restart themselves when I get out of them. Also, I just downloaded the 2.1 update for TELUS, so I'm not sure if thats to blame.

I need to develop an application with downloads the data at the background and update about the progress in the front.
I guess this can be achieved using services and activity and passing data in between the. But, what I need to do is even if I hit back button and then start the activity again. It should check if the service is running or not. If service is not running it should start one else it should display the data from running service.
Something like music player where music is played by a service at a background and activity displays the information. Even on browsing through other activities of the application or hitting back, state of the music player is maintained.

I tap weather icon, get current location no city name and the weather info, I then tap "+" hit my location and it finds my city Corning NY, I add this to the weather app, I close out and hit weather app again and now I have to locations, the one that says current location and the one that says Corning NY, both weather datas are the same. My question is how to I delete or get rid of the current location weather data screen and have only the Corning NY screen when I open the weather app? The data for both is the same but I don't want 2 locations(one named) for the same data.

Imagine raindrops moving on your screen? Do you want your screen always visualize the weather outside while don't block your interaction with other application? Then come to try Weather Face. It is funny, beautiful and easy.
Weather Face decorates your phone screen with different weather animations, including rain, snow, lightning, cloud, and sunshine. For instance, clouds float on your screen when it is cloudy outside. I have a demo video on Youtube :

For a truly amazing weather App check out Animated Weather.
The web site describes it as: Animated Weather for Android - Weather forecast application. The exquisitely realistic video effects of cloudiness, rain and snow provide the vivid sensation of current or future weather conditions for more than 50000 locations over the world.
As good as the App is now the upcoming "Features in Development" are even more exciting.

I have News and Weather set to "Use my location". Up until yesterday, it was working fine. Now the weather tab gives me the message "No weather location available." It will only give me weather if I enter a specific location. I have GPS turned on and other applications that need to find my location, such as Compass, seem to be able to.
